Within the 300 series, there are two potential combinations of tonewood at your fingertips: Sitka spruce and sapele or mahogany and sapele. The spruce-topped guitars (which have model numbers beginning with “31”) present a fresh and exciting spin on a classic tonewood combo. Sitka spruce is the most popular tonewood for a reason: it’s articulate and clear, and it has a good balance of focused fundamental and rich overtone response. Sapele is similar to mahogany in that it is warm, round, and punchy-sounding. However, it has a bit more bite, and bit more top-end sparkle . Together, these two woods produce a sunny, midrange-forward sound with satisfying low-end and delightful treble chime.
