Fender American Original ’70s Jazz Bass
American Original. World-Class Tone. When Leo Fender first set the Jazz Bass free on the unsuspecting world in 1960, he intended it to represent the height of low-end luxury—almost like the Cadillac of bass guitars. Thanks to its curvaceous looks, tonal versatility, and fast neck, it became an instant favorite among rock bassists. Everyone from funk giant Marcus Miller to prog powerhouse Geddy Lee to rock legend John Paul Jones adopted the Jazz Bass, and its punchy, crisp, clear tone has graced hundreds of classic records. Now, Fender pays homage to the legacy of those first Jazz basses with the American Original '70s Jazz bass.
The Wildwood bass guitar department loves Jazz Basses the way heavy metal fans love leather, so we were waiting on pins and needles for these American Originals to come out! Of course, they did not disappoint! Frankly, these basses sound quite familiar. That’s because they have the same sort of tone that has anchored countless classic records, and Fender has achieved such incredible vintage tone by being downright OBSESSIVE about the way they wind these pickups. Everything is period-correct, from the cloth-covered output wires to the fiber bobbins to the alnico 5 magnets. This attention to detail has given these pickups the legendary articulation, punch, and bite we all crave from a great Jazz Bass.
With all of that going on inside these basses, it seems almost unfair that they look this good and play this well—some might say its an embarrassment of riches! But hey, Cadillacs have to ride smooth and look flashy, right? At any rate, the neck feels great—the U-shaped neck works wonderfully with a flatter modern 9.5” radius—and the whole package looks killer thanks to the vintage-appropriate hardware and original-era body radii. Truly, these basses embody Leo Fender’s original intent, because they are as deluxe as can be! The Wildwood bass department loves them, and we know you will, too!
