Used 2002 Fender American Vintage 1957 Stratocaster
Sonic Evaluation
In the pantheon of the stank faces I've ever made while evaluating guitars at Wildwood, the ones I made while playing this guitar are among the worst/best. It has a spongey, articulate attack that really lets you lay into it before blooming into a lovely bell-like resonance. It's appropriate that it's a black Strat, too, because it definitely fits the David Gilmour mold of Strats: bright but with nary an icepick in sight, vocal, and downright snarly. The lows are beefy, the highs are sizzling with tons of harmonic content, and the mids have The Quack.
Frankly, I could play in the bridge position all day. It's muscular and focused, and it has an immensely satisfying clang and jangle to it. The middle position opens up with broader mids and deeper lows, and it has a satisfying depth without sacrificing clarity. The neck position sounds shockingly fat, and single notes have tons of weight, but chords still come through clearly.
All in all, this Strat is a monster. If you're looking for a vintage-spec Strat with tons of tone at a player-friendly price, take this Strat for a spin. I have no doubt it will make you stank face as much as I did!
Condition Report
It's hard to beat the combination of period-correct vintage feel and old-school mojo-tastic sound of Fender's American Vintage series, and this '57 Strat is a perfect example of its many charms. It's also in really good shape--although it has clearly been played, it has also definitely been well-taken-care-of. It shows light to-moderate-signs of normal use, and it has just a couple of cosmetic imperfections to report. There is some a lacquer disruption/chip on the back of the headstock by the tuners and a ding on the top near the bass-side waist. The first tone pot appears to have been replaced along with the pickguard, although the old one is in the case. It comes with its original hardshell case, too!
