Orange Amps Rockerverb 50 MKIII Combo
Built to Melt Faces
The word "Rockerverb" is synonymous with killer high-gain tone, but it has much more to offer than blistering gain-slathered sounds (although it does do those quite brilliantly!). The original Rockerverb was designed to do one thing and one thing only: to melt faces with extreme prejudice. But, over the years, the tonesmiths at Orange have refined the design to help it cover more musical ground. Now in its third incarnation, the MKIII, the Rockerverb 50 Combo has grown into a truly versatile behemoth capable of covering a wide variety of sounds from spanky cleans to jangly chime to classic crunch to hard rock to punk, metal, and beyond. Though it has enough metal power to lay siege to Valhalla, all settings sound incredible, so let's dive deeper and explore the various tones waiting within the Rockerverb 50 MKIII Combo’s tubes.
A complement of eight tubes powers the Rockerverb 50 MKIII Combo’s engine: four 12AX7 preamp tubes, two EL34 power tubes, and two 12AT7 preamp tubes that drive the spring reverb and effects loop. And, it has two Celestion Vintage 30 speakers that work marvelously with the amp’s voice. This configuration has a bit of a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality thanks to the wonderful complementary voicings of the Clean and Dirty channels. In a word, the clean channel is delectable. If you like the idea of sweet, chiming highs above warm, woody low-end and round, robust lows, you'll love the Rockerverb 50's clean channel. Though it has lots of headroom, the Clean channel is still quite touch-sensitive and dynamic, and it has lots of range. You can go from spanky to jangly with a few quick twiddles of the simple yet powerful two-band EQ.
Because the Clean channel is so warm and lush, it pairs beautifully with the onboard spring reverb, which is quite three-dimensional and atmospheric. At subtle settings, it adds a pleasant airiness to the signal and fills out the sound, and it can sound positively cavernous when you dime it. Of course, the 'verb also sounds great on the Dirty channel, adding a sense of spaciousness to the tight, articulate gain-laden tones.
Speaking of the dirty channel, it is positively glorious. At lower gain settings, it has the sort of crunch that summons the vibe and mojo of many of rock's greatest legends: Jimmy Page, Tony Iommi, and Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, to name a few. Past that, the Rockerverb 50 MKIII Combo gets into hard rock and metal territory pretty quickly. Using the three-band EQ, you can dial in just about any heavy, aggressive sound your heart desires. It can do Maiden-esque galloping distortion, snarling punk rock, Iommic sludge, prog-rock precision, and thunderous metal madness. No matter the setting, the Rockerverb's dirty channel always maintains exceptional articulation and clarity. It can handle full six-note chords and complex intervals even with the gain cranked--a rare feat for a high-gain amp. This combination of power and articulation makes the Rockerverb 50 Combo a truly fearsome weapon.
Of course, there are situations where you might not want all of the Rockerverb's fifty watts, so it comes equipped with a half-power switch that bumps it down to twenty-five watts, and an attenuator knob that essentially acts as a master volume. At these lower-wattage settings, the Rockerverb 50 maintains consistent response, so it still has the springiness and feel of a cranked high-wattage amplifier. So, you never have to sacrifice sound quality if you're playing in a small room (or if you want to avoid angering your neighbors!).
We're proud to showcase the Orange Rockerverb 50 MKIII Combo, an amp that can go from the sweetest, most innocent cleans you've ever heard to brutal, facemelting distortion with a click of its included footswitch. Though it is rightfully renowned for its high-gain sounds, it has so much more to offer than metal tone, and it can cover a wide swathe of musical territory. There is endless musical inspiration awaiting you in its vacuum tubes, so we invite you to plug in, crank the volume, and experience the magic of the Orange sound firsthand.
