Ride the Dragon

Wildwoodians, we are pleased to present the Jimmy Page Telecaster. The Jimmy Page Telecaster is a recreation of one of rock’s most important guitars: the 1959 Telecaster that Jimmy Page used on Zeppelin’s whole first record and on many tracks later in their career (including the solo on Stairway to Heaven!). It’s impossible to overstate the influence and importance of this guitar. Rock and roll became an entirely different beast once the world heard the power chords that open “Good Times, Bad Times.” After that record hit like a ton of bricks, rock became more muscular and much ruder, and it had a different sort of swagger to it. Jimmy Page’s Telecaster was the guitar that did it, and we are proud to celebrate that legacy by showcasing this spectacular reissue.

The Jimmy Page Dragon Telecaster’s sweet psychedelic paint job was actually the guitar’s second custom finish. The guitar—originally a gift from Jeff Beck—was originally white blonde before Syd Barrett inspired Page to affix a bunch of mirrors to the body. After some reflection, Page decided strip the finish down to bare wood and paint a dragon on the ash body and add a refractive pickguard. After making sure his guitar looked like no other Tele out there, he hit the studio to record Zeppelin’s first record and made musical history.

A True Heartbreaker

Our friends at Fender have produced a truly stunning recreation of this terrifying Tele. Of course, it sports a killer lacquer finish with a meticulous recreation of Page’s original Dragon doodle. The neck has a custom Jimmy Page C-shaped oval neck profile with a 7.25” radius and vintage frets for pitch-perfect old-school feel. It also has a bridge that can be top-loaded or strung through the body. This is super cool, because Jimmy Page’s tendency to top-load his Tele played a key part in his sound and his technique. Top-loaded Teles have less string tension, which makes big bends easier and makes for more of a percussive attack that blooms into full resonance. It might sound like a little thing, but it imparts a boatload of Zeppelin magic.

Speaking of full resonance, the pickups in this beast are spectacular. They’re Jimmy Page Custom Tele pickups, and they have a ton of mojo. If you play any riff from the first Zeppelin record, it sounds so accurate that it will induce goosebumps. The bridge pickup has plenty of bite, sparkle, and jangle, but it’s a bit ruder and meaner than normal. The neck pickup is throaty, warm, and full-bodied, and it sounds uncommonly three-dimensional and lively. Though the Jimmy Page Tele has some serious historical pedigree, it’s a thoroughbred player ready for the stage or the studio.

We’re proud to help our friends at Fender pay homage to one of the coolest guitars of all time with the Jimmy Page Tele. We believe it captures the magic of the original at an incredible value, and we’re sure you’ll feel a whole lotta love for it as soon as you plug it in.
