Wildwoodians, we have an extra-special treat for you from our friends at Suhr: a limited-edition Aura! Meant to evoke the legendary single-cut maple-topped guitars of yore, the Aura is a sonic titan with vibe and mojo to spare. It's also quite a rare bird, as Suhr only made 100 of these guitars total (this one is #90). And, John Suhr himself levelled the fingerboard and did the fretwork from installation to crowning! This is truly a magical piece of Suhr history, and we have no doubt it will inspire you to embark upon all sorts of fretboard adventures.

Sonic Evaluation

It's probably for the best that Suhr only made 100 of these Auras, because if they built any more their collective power would have reached a nexus point and rend the fabric of space, time, and the universe asunder! As far as vintage maple-topped single-cut guitars go, this serial belongs in the pantheon of greatness.

I'd go so far as to say it's chugnificent--I could sit and play power chords through a dirty amp with it all day (I still may do so if I can get away with it). It's hard to imagine a better pair of rhythm sounds: the bridge pickup is an exemplar of both savage muscularity and sparkle, and the neck pickup is heavy-laden with gristle but still articulate.

Of course, it's also a lead player's dream. The bridge pickup has a biting sound that will cut through anything, and the neck pickup lends even the notes above the twelfth fret a ton of weight. Both positions have a ton of harmonic information, lending everything depth and complexity, and it responds quickly to your touch with just the right amount of vocal twang--ladle on the gain and you can get a vocal cocked-wah kind of effect going on if you squeeze the notes just right. It's the type of sound that makes you want to take a day-long guitar solo, which I am not doing out of respect for my colleagues even though I am sorely tempted.

Overall, this Aura gets it all juuuust right: it has a good blend of rich overtones and a powerful fundamental, it's articulate but beefy, and it has that extra little bit of fairy dust (maybe because John Suhr himself did the fretwork and fretboard leveling) that makes everything ring out beautifully.

Condition Report

This Suhr Aura is in fantastic shape! It has some extremely light fretwear (the frets measure about .105" to .050"), and the guitar only has a few small cosmetic imperfections to note: some very light scratches and tiny dings (the most noticeable is a ding/depression the back, in the middle near the butt). It comes with its original hardshell case and a certificate of authenticity, too!
