Sonic Evaluation

What happens when a truck carrying Adirondack spruce and a truck carrying koa crash into one another? Well, you get a guitar like this fabulous Froggy Bottom H-12 (we're not entirely sure if they use the truck-crash method to build guitars, but it's our best guess). This guitar certainly hits with the force of a large motorized vehicle! Every note has more weight than the song "The Weight" by The Band--even the high e string packs a wallop! It responds to your right hand with immediacy, and the attack is round and springy.

As is often the case with koa-bodied acoustics, this serial has opened up beautifully after having been played, and it has developed a robust overtone presence as a result. On a scale of bright to warm, it sits near the middle with its goes hanging into the warm side. The lows are unbelievably meaty for a concert-bodied guitar, and they sound rich but not so rich that they wander into the mud. The midrange is sweet and has superb presence, packing a round, well-defined punch, and the highs produce a wonderfully sunny, crystalline array of overtones. Somehow, despite how full-bodied and complex it sounds, it manages to maintain excellent note separation. On top of that, it has a natural reverberance from the 12-fret construction that fills the room and makes you wonder how the folks at Froggy Bottom fit so much sound into a concert guitar! For fingerstyle, it works as marvelously as you'd expect, but its talents as a strummer are also surprising and delightful.

This 12-fret terror would make an inspiring companion for anyone looking to experience the magic of a great handmade koa guitar, and we have no doubt it will inspire you to embark on all sorts of acoustic adventures!

Condition Report

This Froggy Bottom is in fabulous shape! It shows normal playwear from use, and it has just a few small cosmetic imperfections to report: a ding on the back binding near the bass-side lower bout, a ding on the top treble-side corner of the peghead, some small indentations on the front of the headstock, and some minor damage on the peghead's binding. Other than that, there are no cosmetic flaws to report! There's also some minor fretwear in the cowboy chord area under the unwound strings, but the frets are in great shape and have tons of life in them. And it comes with its original hardshell case, too!
