Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Junior – VOS
Sonic EvaluationIf you read Wildwood's website regularly, you know that I have a long-standing love affair with Les Paul Juniors. What can I say? All I need in a guitar is one pickup, two knobs, and a bad attitude! So, it was a real pleasure to sit down with this serial, because it showcases lots of the qualities that made me fall in love with the Junior in the first place.
First of all, let's talk midrange. Electric guitars typically have two types of midrange: "broad" or "punchy." Guitars with punchy midrange have frequency bumps that focus on one part of the mids; say, 1.5kHz. By contrast, guitars with broad midrange response have heightened resonance across the whole midrange.
This glorious Junior splits the difference between these two extremes almost exactly. It's broad and sonorous enough to sound full and rich when you hit a big chord, but focused enough to punch and bite in all the right ways. The highs have plenty of chime and sizzle, and the lows are warm, open, and focused.
This Junior has excellent note bloom, too. Overtones pop out in all the right spots on the frequency spectrum, so there's plenty of sparkle to balance out the punch. Despite this rich resonance, this guitar is still startlingly clear (perhaps due to the midrange's vintage-flavored, woody timbre). One way I test for clarity is to play a bunch of complex chords through a gained-out amp, and this Junior performed magnificently. Its string-to-string balance is impeccable.
Pretty much anyone that enjoys the sound of a Les Paul Junior will probably fall in love with this serial. I'm sure it will bring some lucky Gibson fiend a lifetime of joy and inspiration!
