When I evaluate some guitars at Wildwood, politeness and common decency go out the window sometimes, because sometimes a serial practically makes me take a profoundly self-indulgent ten-minute-long guitar solo at a socially unacceptable volume. This James Tyler Studio Elite in hazmat Shmear was one of those guitars--sorry, coworkers! Overall, it sounds super rich with a snappy, percussive attack that blooms into room-filling resonance, and it has enough sustain that I got bored waiting for it to stop ringing.
The bridge pickup is muscular and sculpted with excellent balance lots of overtones, and a serious bite in the mids. The single-coils have that classic scooped, bell-like chime reminiscent of David Gilmour's tone, but when you turn on the midboost, suddenly you're in warm, Hendrixian territory. With that and the series/split/parallel, you can get a legitimately crazy array of sounds. If you're looking for an HSS guitar with a rich voice and endless versatility, this jammin' James Tyler will knock your socks off!
