Martin Guitars Custom Shop NAMM Limited D-45
Awe-InspiringWildwoodians of the acoustic persuasion, we have a special treat for you direct from NAMM! Every year, Martin holds a lottery for several acoustics at the famous trade show, and we were lucky enough to hit the jackpot this year and win this Custom Shop D-45. Equipped with glorious Asian ebony back and sides, European flamed maple binding, and a top made of good 'ol bearclaw Sitka spruce, this dreadnought is a transcontinental wonder. Though its beauty and opulence (look at all that bling!) were points of distraction for the Wildwood staff when it arrived, its tone is what really shut the shop down.
First, lets talk about this D-45's attack. It's woody, articulate, and remarkably touch-sensitive (if you're a fingerstylist looking for a dreadnought, this may be the ticket!). You can coax a lot of different colors out of the top simply by altering your right hand velocity, and the guitar always responds to your touch in a vocal, musical way, even when you really hammer it with a flatpick. Furthermore, it has a bit more capacity for growl than a typical Martin when you dig in, though it always stays sounding clear and open.
The low-end is forceful and rich enough to befit a kingly guitar like a D-45. But, it's well-sculpted enough to avoid flubbiness and mud. The midrange is woody and punchy, and the highs are spacious, sunny, and airy.
When I first strummed a G chord on this guitar, it immediately transported me. I felt like I was on the porch in July with a cold beer and the sun high in the sky instead of smack-dab in the middle of a brutal Colorado winter. I'm sure this wonderful D-45 will take you places, too.
