Used Vintage 1970 Kay 5922 Bass
Sonic Evaluation
You might be tempted to overlook this Kay 5922 bass. Sure, it has some wear and tear, and the neck pickup might not be working, but brother, where we're going, you won't need two functional pickups. In fact, if both pickups were working, it might be classified as a lethal weapon and thus be subject to all sorts of rules and regulations. As is, this thing packs a serious walloping thump!
Overall, it has a woody, warm, vintage tone with a round, springy piano-like attack. Low notes are positively rib-rattling, high notes have plenty of mass, and the mids pack a powerful punch. Though it might not be able to match the pristine sound and articulation of a modern machine, that's not what this bass is for. It's a purpose-built vibe machine with a tone that evokes the classic records of yesteryear, and it would make a fantastic choice in any genre that benefits from vintage mojo: country, blues, garage rock, classic rock, or even punk. Regardless of genre, it will bring the THUMP!
Condition Report
This titanic vintage Kay 5922 is AWESOME! It has accumulated its fair share of dings, chips, and scratches over the course of its five decades of life, and it has an awesome vintage patina to it--mojo alert! The neck pickup makes noise, but it is not functioning properly so it will either need to be rewound or replaced. It comes with a non-original hardshell case. If you're looking for a fresh and exciting flavor of old-school bass tone, this short-scale monster will likely inspire you to bring the thunder!
