Sonic Evaluation

Wildwoodians, redwood-topped instruments always get our motor running, and this 40th anniversary Lowden F-50 is a spectacular example of why it's one of our favorite tonewoods. Redwood is sort of like cedar's scarier, meaner, bigger old brother: it has that same wide dynamic range that goes from warm and open at lower volumes to sparkling and focused when you dig in, but there's just...more of everything: more headroom, more volume, more projecting power, more richness and more frequency response.

This serial's bass response is as massive and woody as the tree its top is made from, and it has a harmonic response that calls to mind the color of burnished bronze. The highs are sweet like spun sugar and expansive with exceptional overtone complexity, and it also has a throaty, powerful vocal resonance in the low-mids. The attack is quite springy but without a ton of "give" so it responds immediately with a piano-like power. Overall, it has a beautiful natural reverberance that fills the room and compels you to get lost in the sauce for awhile. It likes a pick (although if you play at triple fortissimo it might be a bit much), and it excels as a fingerstyle guitar.

Basically, anyone seeking a guitar with outstanding touch-sensitivity and dynamic range along with a robust yet sculpted voice well-suited to a wide variety of applications will love this Lowden!
