The Ultimate Desert Island Guitar

If you were to be marooned on a desert island, and you could only take one guitar with you, what would it be? The new S2 Studio SSH is PRS’s answer to this age-old question! It has everything you’d need to feel fulfilled by your tone when you have time to kill in between writing “HELP” on the beach with palm fronds or painting faces on your volleyball buddy. This is a lofty claim to make, so let’s take a closer look and see what makes the PRS S2 Studio SSH the ultimate desert island guitar!

The key to any great desert island instrument is versatility, and this sweet S2 has it in spades! The two Type-D single-coil pickups have broad midrange response with notches in juuuuust the right places in their frequency response curves. So, they have a rich yet muscular sound with no unwanted flub or fat, sort of like a cross between a Strat single-coil and a soapbar! By contrast, the Starla humbucker in the bridge is punchy and powerful, with plenty of low-end and sweet, singing trebles.

This guitar is so versatile because of the wide variety of switching options it offers. The five-way switch works a little differently than normal, and it gives you all kinds of useful tones! Instead of selecting the middle pickup by itself, position three gives you the bridge ‘bucker and the neck single-coil, which gives you a lovely Peter Green-esque out-of-phase tone.

By itself, the bridge pickup provides plenty of roaring rock tone, but you can also split its coils if thinner tones are what your heart desires. Since the single-coils sound so beefy, positions one and five are full and punchy enough for SRV and Hendrix devotees, while positions 2,3, and 4 have just the right blend of quack, chime, and punch. With the push/pull coil-tap, you can get just about every electric guitar sound you’d ever need!

Of course, if the S2 Studio is going to be your desert island guitar, it has to have a supremely comfy neck! Thankfully, the Pattern Regular neck profile is the kind you could play for years without ever getting sick of it. You wouldn’t get sick of looking at it, either, because the McCarty Sunburst finish looks killer with the tortoiseshell guard!
