Used 1994 Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic
The 'Ol Switcheroo
The multitude of tones hiding within the wood and wire of this Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic thanks to its highly intuitive Switcheroo pickup controls and Blower switch. At first, the array of switching options may seem a little overwhelming, but it's actually quite simple. There are three three-way switches in a row between the master volume and master tone knobs, and each corresponds to a pickup. In the middle position, the pickup is off. The down and up positions activate the pickup, but each position has a different voice. The downward position gives you that pickup wired in series for a richer tone, while can actually have two different tones: split or parallel, which you can assign to each pickup using a set of dip switches in the control cavity. Parallel sounds spanky and sunny, while the split mode has a more full-bodied single-coil tone. The Blower switch bypasses all the other switches and sends you right over to the muscular, snarling bridge humbucker.
Basically, this gives you a limitless palette of tone colors with which you can paint your masterpiece. After a few minutes of fiddling, toggling between pickups and tweaking your sound feels as natural as breathing, and you can find all sorts of inspiring sounds easily. Each single-coil can do both of the iconic S-style tones: fat and warm or sunny and sparkly. So, you can go Hendrix Mode or Gilmour Mode! The bridge humbucker has full-bodied harmonic response across the board, but it still sounds well-defined and balanced, and it can sound quite rude when you slather on the gain.
Things really start to get interesting when you start adding multiple pickups into the equation and fiddling with their voicings. All three pickups with the bridge split and the neck and middle in parallel? Heck yes! Or what about the neck in series plus bridge in parallel, or the neck and middle both split? The customizability allows for all sorts of fun experimentation, and you can find all sorts of iconic tones.
We have no doubt that this Tom Anderson Drop Top Classic's superior versatility and resonance will inspire you to embark on all sorts of fretboard adventures!
