Maple Majesty

Wildwoodians, there's something about a maple top with a slight V pattern to it that makes our collective hearts beat faster, and this 2006 Custom Shop 1960 Les Paul Standard reissue made several employees wonder if they needed to visit a cardiologist! It has one of the most gorgeous chevroned tops we've ever seen and has accordingly been nicknamed Chev-Ronnie Wood (sorry, we know--beautiful guitars inspire us to make puns, we can't help it). The dark burst finish complements the insane top in quite a striking way, too--it seems to indicate an air of mystery, as if this guitar has some wild stories to tell. It certainly has the sonic mojo to tell a compelling tale thanks to its Burstbucker pickups, which have oodles of vintage vibe but with modern clarity.

It'll be bittersweet when Chev-Ronnie James Dio (okay, that's the last one) leaves for its forever home, but we know it will bring some lucky Gibson aficionado all kinds of musical joy.

Sonic Evaluation

This '60 Les Paul Standard sounds as magical as it looks! It's one of those Les Pauls that just sound BIG, and it practically drips with harmonic content. It has a sponge-y attack that gives way to a warm, rich resonance while maintaining excellent articulation. The bridge pickup packs a serious midrange wallop with beefy lows and sparkling highs, while the neck pickup has a broad, vocal midrange response alongside cavernous lows and singing trebles. All in all, it's a sonic beast pugnacious enough to be worthy of the nickname Chev-Ronnie Lott (okay, we lied about being done with the puns last time).

Condition Report

This beautiful '60 reissue is in fabulous shape! There are some very light marks on the top and the finish has burnished slightly, and the cherry color from the aniline dye has bled into the binding somewhat. Other than those small things, it has no cosmetic flaws to speak of. It's a clean, lean, mean fighting machine, and it comes with its original hardshell case, hang tags, and a certificate of authenticity.
