Used 2018 Koll Super Glide Almighty “Old Black” – Old-growth Brazilian Rosewood
Sonic Evaluation
Wildwoodians, this Koll Super Glide has a super cool backstory! Back in 2018, Saul Koll acquired the Marshall Neil Young toured with and used to record a bunch of stuff (including the classic Rockin' in the Free World), and decided to bring the amp with him to NAMM that year. Lest the amp get lonely, he made a really special guitar companion as tribute to Neil Young's legendary LP, dubbed "Old Black." Saul used old-growth hundred-year-old Brazilian rosewood for the fingerboard, and wound the pickups to match Neil Young's specs.
It's a pretty cool piece, but the tone beats the backstory for sure! That Neil Young fella was onto something with this pickup configuration, because the mini-hum and the P-90 complement one another the way Crazy Horse complemented Neil. Both pickups have tons of dynamic range (and by that I mean that they sound warm and open when you play softly and focused and sparkly when you dig in), and they have an exceptionally rich bouquet of overtones.
The mini-humbucker is bright and packs a perfectly-sized midrange punch, with sizzling trebles and tight but muscular lows. The P-90 has a beautiful blend of woody, warm low end, punchy mids, and sweet, sparkling high. Combine them in the middle position, and you get gloriously full, robust resonance across the board.
I may have irritated my coworkers with how many times I played "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" on this guitar, but it was totally worth it. The best "inspired by" guitars make you feel like you have your favorite guitar player's sound at your fingertips, and this Koll does that and so much more. I have no doubt you'll find it has a heart of gold if you take it for spin!
