Working at Wildwood is amazing, but I'll be doggoned if it isn't also heartbreaking sometimes when I can't take home an instrument I'm head-over-heels in love with. I'm certainly going to think of this bass every time I hear "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor for the rest of my life! It's one of the coolest Rickenbackers I've ever seen, and one of the best-sounding. It so lively and vibrant that it practically jumps out of your hands during play, and it is LOUD acoustically.
That translates to the type of tone that made me turn up our 500-watt bass amp so loud my coworkers couldn't think and wail for a little bit. The low-end is preposterously fat, the midrange packs a Paul Bunyan-sized punch, and the highs are meaty with a nice woody chime. The bridge pickup is pure Rickenbacker growl, and the neck pickup sounds like someone puts frets on the angriest upright bass of all time. The middle position? Pure bliss.
Basically, if you're looking for a vintage Rickenbacker bass, it's hard to imagine doing better than this serial.
This Ricky 4001 is incredibly clean! The frets are original, but have been leveled at some point. They show virtually no wear, but they have a flat-looking crown to them, and they measure .075 inches by .025 inches. The bass shows very little light wear from normal use considering its vintage--just some light scratches, tiny dings, tarnishing, and light checking along areas of the binding. The finish has also yellowed over time in a really cool way. Overall, it's an uber-clean example of a vintage Rick, and it comes with its original hardshell case, too!
