The Spirit of 1960

Gibson's original "Burst" Les Pauls are perhaps the most sought-after vintage guitars of all time. They are renowned for their beauty and snowflake-like uniqueness; after all, each one had a different level of flame in the maple top, and each finish received a different amount of UV light, which drastically changes the color of the finish. So, no two are alike, and that's the beauty of the burst.

And there aren't many originals to compare, because Gibson made less than 2,000 Les Pauls between 1958 and 1960. Near the tail end of that run, they started putting slimmer necks on them. These guitars had lightning-fast feel that appealed to lots of rock and blues guitar players in the '60s (though some of them had '59 neck profiles--more on that later!).

One of these players, a young British man named Eric Clapton, touched off the British blues revolution and the Les Paul renaissance by playing his '60--nicknamed "Beano"--on John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers' album of the same name. Another young British fellow named Jimmy Page made a few classic records that you might have heard with his '60 LP. Meanwhile, a young American guitarist with a '60 got the funk right on his 49th try with his band, the James Gang--yup, Joe Walsh played a '60, too!

Of course, an original '60 Les Paul will run you somewhere in the neighborhood of three-hundred grand. So, we are delighted to report that our friends at Gibson have decided to celebrate the '60 LP's 60th anniversary in style by reissuing a Historic Anniversary edition. Using time-consuming old-world manufacturing processes and incredible materials, the wizards and warlocks of the Gibson Custom Shop have captured the vibe of 1960 in these imminently playable, drool-inducing guitars. Let's take a closer look and see what makes them so special!

Maximum Resonance for Monster Tone

All great electric guitars begin with killer raw materials, and these 60th Anniversary 1960 Les Pauls are no exception. After all, it's impossible when you pair a premium maple top with a select mahogany body. This classic tonewood combination produces a warm, rich, round unamplified sound with just the right amount of cut and articulation.

Hide glue is another source of Custom Shop magic. It's a protein-based adhesive, and when you use it to attach two pieces of wood together, it allows for maximum energy transfer. Though hide glue is extremely difficult to work with, the Custom Shop wizards use it to secure each and every point of connection on reissue Les Pauls. This pays incredible dividends to each instrument's tone. So, these Les Pauls showcase world-beating resonance and sustain!

Boss 'Buckers

Of course, it is nigh-impossible to make rock and roll music without electricity, so let's talk about the wires within the wood. Each 60th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul comes equipped with two Alnico III Custombuckers, and they are stunning recreations of vintage PAFs. They punch, bark, bite, rasp, and snarl with the best of them, and they have a good balance of richness and clarity. The mids are woody, the highs sing with inimitable sweetness, and the lows are pure sculpted muscle.

Also, these luscious Lesters come equipped with old-school paper-in-oil capacitors. These true-to-vintage components improve high-end transparency and impart a bit of extra treble cut. So, the warm, beefy humbucking pickups sound supremely balanced.

Goin' Like '60

To celebrate the 1960 Les Paul's sixtieth birthday, Gibson pulled out all of the stops to create three historically-accurate versions of the model that document its evolution: the V1, the V2, and the V3. Each guitar comes in different finishes that represent the variations we see in the finishes on original bursts, too!

The V2 on this guitar is meant to evoke the classic '60 Les Paul, and it has the same Authentic '60 Slim C neck profile that made Eric Clapton fall in love with the Les Paul he nicknamed "Beano." It comes in two finishes as well: a stunning Orange Lemon Fade and a delectable Tomato Soup burst.

It's All in the Little Things

Gibson has also gotten all of the little things right for each version of the 60th Anniversary 1960 Les Paul Standard. These guitars come decked out with all sorts of period-correct cosmetic appointments. We're talking laminated cellulose butyrate pickguards, authentic stepped 2-ply truss rod covers, amber butyrate top hat knobs with silver inserts, amber catalin switch tips, black royalite control covers, aged cellulose nitrate trapezoid inlays, and authentic profile nickel-silver pickup rings. Those may seem like small details, but Gibson's attention to such vintage minutiae really gives you an unparalleled sense of immersion when you pick up one of these 60th Anniversary Les Pauls. It really feels like stepping back in time!
