Vintage Martins are always reason to jump for joy, and this battered 000-21 from 1955 is a beautiful old soul. It has clearly been played, adn that has caused it to open up beautifully. It responds immediately and forcefully to even the lightest attack, and it has a beautifully complex overtone profile.
The bass response is deep, woody, and warm, and the midrange is lush and complex while the highs sparkle beautifully. Despite its preponderance of overtones, this 000-21 also has excellent clarity and string separation if you want to bust out some ten-dollar chords with internal dissonances. It rewards a light touch, but it doesn't mind an enthusiastic flatpick. It has a decent amount of headroom and volume, but those are beside the point here. This guitar's strengths lie in its capacity for subtlety, dynamics, and nuance. It's a fingerstylist's dream, and it's also more than capable as a small-bodied strummer. If you're looking to harness the power of Brazilian rosewood, this is an amazing opportunity to do so!
This 000-21 has been battle-tested but also lovingly taken care of and maintained with expert repair work, and its spectacular sound and playability is a testament to the greatness of Martin's craftsmanship. First off, we'll talk about what's original and what's not. It has undergone a refret, and the new frets show light wear, measuring .080 inches by .035 inches. Remarkably, it appears to have never needed a neck reset (we could be wrong on this, but the glue around the end block doesn't look disturbed, and there are no tell-tale signs like drill holes on the fretboard at the body joint or disruption around the fretboard tongue). The neck angle is good, and it can be set up for fingerstyle action. The nut, tuners and bridge look original, and the saddle might be, too.
