Wildwoodians, if I could swing it, this bass would go home with me tonight. But, one of the heartbreaking things about working here is you can't have everything you love, so it will be my treasured lunch break companion until it finds its next guardian, at which point I will collapse into a heap while sobbing. Those of you who read our site regularly know that I (Trevor, Wildwood's resident bass expert) LOVE Precision basses, and this one might be my favorite example I've ever played. It's just magic! There's no other explanation!
Overall, this bass has a wonderfully woody timbre, and it produces the hugest, clearest fundamental I've ever gotten out of a bass. Hitting the low E string is like standing inside a hollowed out ancient redwood and feeling the whole tree resonate. Imagine a grand piano enlarged to 100 times its original size, and you'll get a good idea of this serial's low-end power. The midrange packs a Godzilla-sized broad punch, and the trebles are so weighty that notes on the G string will make your drummer's kick drum quiver in fear.
More important than all that, this bass is INSPIRING! From the moment I first hit that cavernous first low E, I was in a flow state while evaluating it, surfing a wave of pure creativity. Any instrument that puts you in that headspace immediately is special indeed, and this bass is in rarefied air even among the other instruments that have taken me there.
Whoever gets this bass will immediately become a threat to planetary tectonic stability, as the Earth itself will quake in fear of their low-end power (I'm exaggerating, but only slightly). I have no doubt the next guardian of this fine instrument will find themselves resorting to hyperbole in their attempts to describe it, too!
This ultra-vibey '63 Precision Bass is mostly original, but has undergone some mods over years. It appears to have begun its life with a sunburst finish, but a previous owner stripped it and refinished it natural. The neck is gloss nitro lacquer, but it has likely been oversprayed at some point, and the logo is not period-correct; however, it is dated to October 5th, 1963. The pickup is original and measures 10.75k in output, but a previous owner replaced the pots. The pickguard, knobs, tuners, and bridge are all appear to be original, and they function well. The frets have been replaced at some point, and they measure .078 inches by 0.027 inches with very little wear. The nut is also non-original. It comes with its original hardshell case, which is battered to the point that we recommend carrying it under your arm.
