This bass is in fantastic shape! It shows very light signs of normal use (mostly just some scratches on the pickguard) and it has no cosmetic blemishes to report other than some very light hardware tarnishing. The frets also show virtually zero wear--bonus! It comes with its original hardshell case, too.
There's no one in the world today who knows the Stingray bass better than Sterling Ball. Back when Music Man was in its infancy, Sterling was the beta tester for Leo Fender and Tommy Walker's prototype designs, and he acted as the deciding vote on many design decisions when Tommy and Leo couldn't agree (being Ernie Ball's son certainly gave his opinion some weight!). For instance, his input was the impetus for the Music Man humbucker's original design! After much arguing between Sterling, Leo, and Tommy (not to mention lots of blood, sweat, tears, and tinkering!) the Stingray was unleashed on the public in 1976, and it wound up becoming the go-to bass for everyone from funk masters like Bernard Edwards of Chic and Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson to thunderous rock players like Cliff Williams of AC/DC to session virtuosos like Pino Palladino and Tony Levin to heavy metal warlords like Rex Brown of Pantera. How did so many players of such diverse interests and tastes fall in love with the Stingray? Well, love is mysterious, but our theory is that the Stingray's signature sound delivers the sort of deep, clear low-end, bright trebles, and inimitable growl that works in almost every genre, giving you limitless possibilities.
This short-scale version is a fresh, new spin on a classic! Basically, it's like a little red sports car. It plays super fast, and the strings have a wonderfully slinky handfeel. And the tone is unbelievable. The passive pickups still have the wonderful growl that the Stingray is known for, but they have more of a vintage character. Using the rotary knob, you can put the pickup is series, parallel, or single-coil mode. In series, it sounds like an EB-0s distinguished high-fidelity brother. In parallel, the tone gets brighter and more vocal, and it sounds like an overfed, muscular Jazz bass in single-coil mode. The short scale also imparts an upright-like percussiveness to the attack and some wonderful note bloom.
Basically, if you play this bass, it signifies that you have immaculuate taste and perfect opinions (I say this because a short-scale Music Man just like this one has been my daily driver for almost half a decade). I have no doubt you'll love this one as much as I love mine!
