Pure Rock and Roll Joy
The arrival of the Original Collection SG Special brought all work at Wildwood to a grinding halt as we gathered around the case ooh-ing and ah-ing. It takes quite a special guitar to cause a hush to fall over Wildwood, but these guitars look so cool that quiet reverence seemed appropriate. Gibson really nailed the finishes, and these colors look SO GOOD with white-button vintage tuners.
Of course, these guitars have plenty of substance beneath their stylish exterior (speaking of stylish, look at those bound fretboards!). Their resonant mahogany bodies go with their P-90 pickups the way a cold beer goes with a fresh-grilled cheeseburger, and together they produce a delightful tone that works in just about every musical context. The midrange punches, snarls, and bites with the best of 'em, while the sweet, singing highs have plenty of sizzle and chime. Low-end joy abounds, too! The bass frequencies are woody and warm, but they're remarkably clear even in high-gain situations. And, the SG Special sustains forever thanks to its compensated wrapround tailpiece.
With SGs, a wider neck is also part of the fun, and our friends at Gibson nailed the neck profile here. It lives squarely in the Goldilocks Zone, which a highly technical term we in the guitar industry use when a guitar feels just right. It's thin at the first fret for easy chording, and it becomes thicker up around the twelfth fret, which makes ripping leads feel natural and easy. It's the sort of neck that invites you to play for hours and hours--just be careful, or you'll strum away your whole evening!
We are stoked to showcase these SG Specials. Plugging them into a cranked amp is a sure-fire recipe for rock and roll joy, and they have a way of connecting you to the visceral delights of electric music. We invite you to experience the simple pleasures of P-90s by taking the SG Special for a spin. After one power chord, we're sure you'll be hooked for life.
