I had never played a real vintage Hofner violin bass before I picked this little guy up, and I'm happy to say it's everything I dreamed it would be! To put it simply, it made me feel like Paul McCartney! It's pretty cool to have the thumping, deep, yet articulate tone of Sir Paul at your fingertips and that immediately inspired my creativity and compelled to come up up with fun new bassline--always a sure sign of eldritch musical power!
The bass response is something special, too! You'd be forgiven for thinking a tiny bass might lack low-end, but the opposite is true here. The low E sounds absolutely C A V E R N O U S, with the exact kind of woody clarity you need to avoid muddiness. In fact, the same is true of the midrange and trebles, too--everything sounds Texas-sized, but the inherent woody dryness keeps everything sounding articulate.
Its hollow construction also gives it impressive liveliness and acoustic resonance that translates to huge tone, and it also gives it immense touch-sensitivity. The bass responds to changes in attack beautifully, which makes for a wonderfully dynamic player experience.
It turns out Paul McCartney knows a thing or two about picking basses. I have no doubt you'll love this one as much as he loves his!
This vintage Hofner bass is remerkably clean for an instrument of its vintage! The frets look nearly perfect, and it has accumulated just a few small war wounds over the years: some small dings (a few of which have been touched up), some checking along the binding and in other typical areas, but it has no serious cracks or damage. The caps on the back of the G and D string tuners are missing, but it does not affect the functionality of the tuners at all. Everything looks original except for some tiny screws on the tailpiece--super cool! There is an electrical tape repair on the bridge pickup leads that looks very solid and may just be a preventative measure. It comes with a non-original Epiphone hardshell case that fits it quite well. All in all, it's an incredibly clean vintage example, and it soudns incredible!
