Sonic Evaluation

As I was tuning up this '58 Country Club for an eval, a coworker stopped by my office to show me some music I made. I strummed a couple chords acoustically and he stopped mid-sentence, jaw on the floor, and said "Holy cow, that thing sounds like a Martin!" Pretty much everyone at the shop who plays or hears this serial is seriously freaked out by it. It's simply magical!

First things first: its acoustic resonance does indeed call to mind the power of a Martin dreadnought. This guitar sounds three-dimensional, complex, and rich without any electricity in the equation, and an amplifier only further magnifies those traits to the nth degree. Plugged in, it sounds unbelievably full and juicy across the board, with fat-sounding trebles, gargantuan bass response, and that inimitable signature Gretsch sweetness in the upper mids. The bridge pickup is sheer perfection. It can jangle beautifully, or it can do the Malcolm Young/Neil Young snarl and crunch with extreme prejudice. The neck pickup, by contrast, is very sweet and glassy--kind of a Jekyll and Hyde situation. The two pickups complement one another perfectly in the middle position, which has the best of both worlds. If you're looking for a killer vintage Gretsch that evokes comparisons to acoustic guitars with its powerful resonance, check this serial out! I have no doubt you'll freak out like the Wildwood staff over it!

Condition of Instrument

This amazing vintage Gretsch Country Club has accumulated a lot of honest playwear over its long and storied life, and it isn't completely original, but it's an absolute killer with tons of mojo. It shows typical vintage wear that looks really cool (check out that checking!), and the binding is delaminating in some spots, including an area by the switches that seems to have undergone a repair at some point. The top has also been oversprayed in spots. Most things are original except for the frets and the tuners, which are aftermarket Grovers. The tone switch is very subtle in one position and seemingly doesn't work in the other, and the volume pots are intermittent but still work. It comes with its original hardshell case, which is battered but functional.
