Although Epiphone only made Casinos in America for a relatively short while, they had an outsized impact on music and guitar culture; after all, Keith Richards, Paul Weller, the Davies brothers, Noel Gallagher, and three-quarters of a little-known indie rock band called The Beatles all played and loved their Casinos. This USA version captures the sweet sound of those vintage examples in a modern player-friendly package, and it looks cooler than a polar bear's toenail doing it!
Why It's a Winner
So, what made the Casino so revelatory that it captured the imagination of so many important guitarists? Well, it has to do with the special alchemy between its fully-hollow construction and its pugnacious P-90 pickups. The fully hollow body gives it an acoustic-like touch-sensitivity, outstanding clarity and note separation, and a lovely sense of airy natural reverberance. That sort of sound is the macaroni to the P-90s' cheese! The USA Dogear P-90s have a wide dynamic range that accentuates the hollow body's strengths. They do everything from warm, fat, and jazzy to snarling rock viciousness and everything in between. The midrange punches and snarls, the highs sparkle and chime, and the lows have plenty of heft.
Master of More Than One Game
Though the USA Collection Epiphone Casino will certainly nail the jangly tones of the British Invasion (so much so that you might catch yourself thinking about getting a mop top if you play too long), the Casino can do much more that. Your mileage may very, but this guitar writer's favorite live rock tone of all time came from a Casino plugged into a tweed-style Deluxe. Frankly, its mean disposition makes it an excellent choice for just about all forms of aggressive rock, but it can go in the opposite direction, too. Its delicious clean tone, wide dynamic range and touch sensitivity allow it to capture nuanced, expressive performances, making it an excellent vehicle for blues, jazz, funk, and folky fingerstyle. Heck, it's even an effective twang machine. It just has one of those voices that inspires no matter the context.
