Rosewood returns to the King of the Flat-Tops

The Gibson SJ-200 is the world’s most famous acoustic guitar and well deserves its designation as the “King of the Flat-Tops.” Often made with maple back and sides, the earliest examples were instead made with rosewood bodies. Now, Gibson is proud to offer the SJ-200 Standard Rosewood, bringing rosewood back to this highly acclaimed and cherished model, along with the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system for amplified sound that captures the guitar’s distinctive voice and every nuance of your playing.

Embraced by everyone from singing cowboy-movie and TV stars and country superstars to folk and rock legends, the SJ-200 has been heard on countless recordings and seen on stages worldwide for decades. The SJ-200 Standard Rosewood continues that legacy with the rosewood back and sides found on the earliest examples of the celebrated Gibson Super Jumbo acoustic.

The SJ-200 Standard Rosewood features a rosewood back and sides paired with a Sitka spruce top and traditional scalloped X-bracing for a bold sound with excellent projection. The rosewood body gives this version a richer bass response than the maple-bodied SJ-200 Standard, while the Sitka spruce top and Super Jumbo body retain the power and projection associated with the model. Multi-ply binding frames the top and back, and the gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish highlights the guitar’s classic silhouette.

The mahogany neck has a comfortable Rounded profile and is fitted with a bound Indian rosewood fretboard with a 12-inch radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl graduated crown inlays. The bound headstock is ornamented with the Gibson logo and crown, both inlaid in mother of pearl. Gold Grover Imperial tuners work with a TUSQ nut to provide smooth operation and solid tuning.

The body features the iconic SJ-200 pickguard and a two-bar rosewood Moustache bridge, one of the model’s most recognizable appointments. The bridge is equipped with a TUSQ saddle and bridge pins.

Inside, the SJ-200 Standard Rosewood is now equipped with the all-new Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. This active system uses two lightweight sensors mounted on the internal bridge plate. The sensors are matched with optimized individual preamps to deliver full-bodied, amplified acoustic tone that lets the guitar’s character and personality come through when amplified, with no impact on the unamplified tone. The Baggs HiFi DNA system offers comparable gain-before-feedback to an under-saddle pickup. The system also includes soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls that are quick and easy to access while playing, and all but invisible to your audience.

The SJ-200 Standard Rosewood brings an early tonewood pairing back to the King of the Flat-Tops while retaining the unmistakable appointments that have made the SJ-200 a stage and studio icon. A Gibson hardshell case is also included for wherever the road takes you.
