Why Pick a Thin Skin?

Wildwood Guitars has partnered with Fender to bring you the coolest guitars on the planet for over thirty years. Over the course of our long and storied history, one of our greatest collaborative accomplishments is the American Vintage Thin Skin series. They are such otherworldly guitars we cannot help but bow down to the wizard-like skill of Fender’s skilled craftsman.

What makes them so special? Well, the magic starts with a lightweight, resonant piece of ash or alder that sings with a loud clear voice. Then, our friends at Fender apply a thin, fifties-style nitrocellulose finish to the wood. This "Thin Skin" allows the guitar to breathe and resonate just like our favorite vintage Fenders. With this classic sonic foundation established, Fender hot-rods our Thin Skins with several appointments that enhance playability like a modern 9.5" radius and narrow-tall 6105 frets, which ensure a luxurious playing experience. Finally, Fender puts the cherry on top by dropping in Custom Shop pickups that provide classic tone with modern clarity.

Thin Skins have been a staple for many years at Wildwood. Nevertheless, we still get excited every time we plug one in. We can't thank our friends at Fender enough for building such delightful guitars for us, and we know they will inspire you to reach new heights in your playing.

The Icon

Few guitars are more iconic than a three-tone sunburst Strat with a rosewood fingerboard. The way the dark fretboard and the earthy burst contrast with the mint pickguard is sure to activate the salivary glands of any six-string fanatic. They conjure up visions of greats like Hendrix, SRV, and Rory Gallagher. They are the definition of the word "classic," and that's why the sunburst 1959 Stratocaster has been a staple of our Thin Skin line for over a decade. It's been awhile since we last had these bad boys in stock, and we are delighted that they have returned.

These Thin Skin Strats are sah-weet for a variety of reasons, but the most important one is their thin, fifties-style nitrocellulose lacquer finish, which allows the resonant alder body to resonate to its fullest potential. Fender also equipped it with Custom Shop '54 Single-Coils, which are positively glorious. The bridge pickup is sparkly and it some nice bell-like clang in the highs to go with tight lows and snappy, biting midrange. The middle pickup is well-rounded, with full-bodied lows, vocal mids, and glassy, cutting highs. The neck pickup is thick and throaty, with warm, robust low-end and righteously smooth highs. The in-between positions are full of Hendrixian chirp and quack, too!

But, the sound is only half of the equation here. The other reason these guitars are so monstrously addictive to play is their feel. Like all our Thin Skins, they have a modern 9.5" radius, which is flat enough that it allows you to bend strings easily and round enough to make chording comfortable. They also have narrow-tall 6105 frets, which make bends much easier and allow you to get full tone with less left-hand effort.

These appointments sit atop a neck with a lovely D-shaped profile that lends itself well to Strat-tastic maneuvers. If you want to do a screaming Gilmour-esque bend, you can get plenty of leverage by placing your thumb on "shoulder" of the D. If you're the sort of person who likes to bend strings (and if you're looking at Stratocasters, you probably do!), this neck will work wonders for you! It also feels great for chunking away on chords because of the way the contour hugs your palm.

We're proud to present the American Vintage Thin Skin 1959 Stratocaster in three-tone sunburst. We know that its sweet vintage-styled sounds, fantastic feel, and stunning looks will inspire you to make all sorts of joyous noise.
