Nights in Natural Satin

Wildwoodians, we are proud to present yet another compelling chapter in our Thin Skin story: the Roasted Ash Thin Skin Stratocaster! Breaking new ground always gets us excited here at Wildwood, so we are positively jazzed about these Strats, because they let us accomplish a bunch of exciting firsts with our brilliant friends at Fender. For instance, they're the first Thin Skin to sport a 100% satin finish instead of the typical gloss. It also marks the first time we've ever done a Thin Skin with a roasted body AND a roasted maple neck. Finally (and this is the part that gets us especially stoked), they're the first Thin Skin we've ever done that isn't tied to a specific year or model from the past. With the Roasted Ash Stratocaster, we wanted to add to the Strat's storied history by adding some brand-new wrinkles to one of the most iconic designs in musical history. With this in mind, our friends at Fender delivered us axes that exceeded our wildest expectations, so let's dive deeper and see what makes them such an exciting addition to the mythology of the Stratocaster.

Of course, all new things come from old, so there are a few key reference points for the Roasted Ash Strat. We love the sound of Fender's '54 Custom Shop single-coils so much that we put them in most of our Thin Skins already, so we figured there was no point in fixing something so decidedly unbroken! The slightly-underwound single-coils have smooth, glassy lows to go with sweet, singing highs and vocal, cutting midrange, and this frequency response translates to an incredibly dynamic, expressive playing experience.

We also borrowed the satin-finished neck from our roasted '52 Telecasters, which pays great dividends for playability. Oftentimes, gloss finishes on necks take a fair amount of play time to "break in" and become less sticky. These Roasted Ash Strats will play like a broken-in guitar right out of the box! They also feature a host of classic Thin Skin appointments, including 6105 frets, a 9.5" radius, and a comfortable 10/56 "boat neck" profile. We believe that this combination of appointments gives these Strats incredible ergonomics!

Now, for something completely different! Let's talk about the effects of roasting tonewoods. When you subject a piece of wood to lots of heat, it saps the wood of moisture, and drier wood has lots of alluring qualities for guitarists! For one, less water equals less weight, so these roasted rockers are easy on the back and the eyes. Also, roasted wood is more stable. Regular tonewood moves when it gets dried out, but roasted wood has already been dried. Thus, it's more resistant to changes in humidity. So, your killer setup won't change when you get a dry patch of weather!

The coolest part of using roasted tonewoods, though, is the way they impart a bit of vintage-style resonance to the guitar's overall timbre. When a guitar lives a long life, its wood dries out, and drier wood gives you a warmer, more focused, clearer tonality that we Guitar Scribes often term "woody" for lack of a better term. Furthermore, the roasted neck acts like a wooden tuning fork, giving the guitar extra-clear ringing sustain. So, while these Roasted Ash Thin Skins may not sound like a fifties Strat, they do have a fair amount of vintage mojo thanks to their wood chemistry!

We are so excited to showcase the Fender Thin Skin Roasted Ash Stratocaster for our exceptional customers because we believe it is the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the Thin Skin story. Its combination of vintage-inspired tone, au naturel styling, and super ergonomics has the whole Wildwood staff abuzz with excitement, and we know it will bring any Fender fanatic years and years of six-string joy.
