Fender American Original ’60s Precision Bass
American Original. World-Class Tone. It’s impossible to overstate the importance of the Fender Precision Bass. Before its introduction in 1951, the bass was an inaccessible instrument. Upright basses were back-breakingly large, prohibitively expensive, and required years of training to play (hey, playing bass is HARD without frets!). Then, in one fell swoop, Fender made the wonderful world of the low-end accessible by letting the P Bass loose upon the world! Who knows how many bassists would have never picked up the instrument in the first place simply because they never had the option? Now, Fender honors the legacy of those trailblazing first fretted basses with their new American Original ‘60s Precision Bass.
The Wildwood bass guitar department loves Precision Basses with the intensity of a thousand suns, so we were jumping up and down with anticipation when the American Originals came in. Of course, they did not disappoint! Honestly, you’ve heard the sound of these basses before. This is the same tone that has anchored countless classic records, and Fender has achieved such incredible vintage tone by being downright OBSESSIVE about the way they wind these pickups. Everything is period-correct, from the cloth-covered output wires to the fiber bobbins to the alnico 5 magnets, and their attention to detail has given these pickups the legendary tone we crave.
Fender has also been obsessive about nailing the vintage vibe on these basses, and they don’t disappoint in the feel or beauty department, either! The 1963 "C" neck feels great, and the modern 9.5” radius helps these basses achieve buttery-smooth playability. If vintage-accuracy is your concern, have no fear: these powerful thunder staffs have original-era body radii, vintage tall frets, and a thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish that allows them to breathe and resonate like a vintage bass.
All of this adds up to a mighty bass with unstoppable low-end power, but—more importantly—these American Original ‘60s Precision Basses are a fitting tribute to the original Fenders that shocked the world by democratizing the bass. It’s hard to imbue a reissue with this much mojo, but the fine folks at Fender have put in the elbow grease to make it happen! Now, we invite you to enjoy the fruits of their labor and experience the classic sound of the American Original ’60s Precision Bass.
