Welcome to the Twilight ToneEarlier this year, a group of mad scientists gathered in a secret Fender facility at an undisclosed location outside Corona, California. Together, they hatched a nefarious scheme codenamed “Project Parallel Universe” to take the guitar world by storm. Using dark, arcane technologies, they combined beloved electric guitar shapes and shaped them into hybrids shot through with terrifying rock and roll power. They made them bigger, faster and stronger. They didn’t think about the consequences of their actions. Now, like a horde of monsters emerging from a wormhole connected to a parallel universe, the products of their evil experiments are finding their way to guitar stores across America. Wildwood Guitars is proud to showcase these creatures from another dimension, and we hope you find their out-of-this-world styling and unexpected sounds as inspiring as we do!
Opposites AttractThe Fender Telecaster is a symbol of tradition. It was the first electric guitar, and it is so closely associated with rock music that when you mention the "guitar" to a non-guitarist, chances are they'll form a mental image of a Tele. Keith Richards, Jimmy Page, Merle Haggard and countless other pickers associated with the grand tradition of pop music all played Telecasters, and they are as much a part of American lore as apple pie and Chevrolets.
If the Telecaster is rock and roll's favorite son, the Jazzmaster is the black sheep. Originally intended to be a jazz guitar as its name implies, the Jazzmaster caught a minor following among surf guitarists but didn't come into its own until the first great heyday of indie rock in the early 1990s. Players like Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine, and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. saw Jazzmasters in pawn shops for cheap, figured out that they sounded great, and used them to launch a new musical tradition that, at times, sounded wholly divorced from the norms of pop and rock music.
So, what happens when these two opposites meet in the same guitar body? No, they don't negate one another à la matter and anti-matter, but that's a good guess! They simply form one of the most enticing electric guitars we have ever had the privilege of showcasing at Wildwood guitars: the Fender Parallel Universe Jazz-Tele.
What makes it so special? Well, the Jazz-Tele's mixture of the Telecaster's iconic styling with a little bit of Jazzmaster flair is certainly visually enticing, but the capacity of these guitars to cultivate musical joy goes far beyond their aesthetic delights. The two American Vintage '65 Jazzmaster single-coils mimic the tone of the Jazzmasters of yore with frightening accuracy. If you are a fan of jangle, chime, and bite, you will fall head over heels in love with the bridge pickup. If you seek thick, warm, vintage-style bass along with cutting, quacking upper mids and woody low mids, the neck pickup will be a source of endless sonic inspiration.
If we've learned anything from James Brown, it's that feeling good is just as important as sounding good, and these Jazz-Teles excel in that regard as well. Fender's design team gave these fantastic axes a fun mixture of old-school feel and modern convenience. The oval C-shaped neck profile has its roots in the classic Fender necks of the 1960s, but it has a modern 9.5" radius and 21 narrow-tall frets to give new-school players the buttery feel they crave.
When you factor in additional features like a hot-rodded vibrato system (a Jazzmaster bridge with Mustang saddles for a bit more mass), a bone nut, and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, one thing becomes clear: opposites DO attract, and when they come together it is beautiful. We invite you to celebrate the unholy matrimony of the Jazzmaster and Telecaster and experience the magic of the Fender Parallel Universe Jazz-Tele. We know you will find its mixture of tradition and innovation as inspiring as we do.
