Fender Artist Series The Edge Stratocaster
Arena-Worthy ToneIs there a more arena-ready guitarist than The Edge? As member of a U2, his anthemic playing has wowed crowds of thousands night in and night out over the Irish band’s storied career. His singular guitar style melds post-punk angularity and conscious minimalism with shoegaze’s attention to texture and atmosphere (not to mention, a healthy dose of hooks!). Since The Edge is such an iconic modern guitar hero, it’s only right that he get a signature Fender, and his new Artist Series Stratocaster captures his hockey rink-sized sound with startling accuracy.
The recipe for The Edge’s signature Strat starts with a resonant piece of alder and a collection of three powerful pickups. In the neck and middle position, you can get all sorts of warm, glassy vintage tones from two Custom Shop Fat ‘50s single-coils, while the DiMarzio FS-1 in bridge presents a much thicker, fatter tone than normal while retaining the crispness and jangliness that we love from position one.
Having this diverse blend of sounds allows you to cover a ridiculous amount of ground. This Strat can definitely handle the clean, chiming sounds that The Edge is known for, and it can work beautifully as a paintbrush to color your tracks with effects, but it can still cover all the more standard rock tones with great aplomb. I’d feel completely confident playing it at a blues gig on Tuesday and a shoegaze show on Wednesday!
Of course, The Edge had to have an uber-comfy neck, because no one wants their hand to cramp up in front of 100,000 people! So, the team at Fender equipped this Strat with an ultra-fast Modern “C” profile and a 9.5” radius for maximum playability all the way up and down the fretboard.
This guitar also had to be dependable! An out-of-tune guitar is bad through a practice amp, but catastrophic when going through a stadium-sized PA, so this guitar comes equipped with locking tuners to give you peace of mind. Add in a big seventies-style headstock for added flair, and you have a stylish, versatile player’s guitar ready for the studio, the couch, or the stage!
