Fender Limited Edition American Special Mustang
The Student Has Become the MasterWho could have possibly known how iconic the Fender Mustang would become when it was first introduced in 1964? After all, it was supposed to just be a student model! Perhaps it’s a testament to Leo Fender’s penchant for over-engineering that the guitar he intended to be an entry-level instrument became a legend in its own right. Regardless, the Mustang found quite a following among a wide swath of guitarists. Funk masters like John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, prog heroes like Todd Rundgren of Utopia and shoegazers like Bilinda Butcher have all used the Mustang to great effect (and we can’t forget Kurt Cobain, who used and abused Mustangs throughout his career!). And the Mustang is still kicking, fifty-seven years after its arrival. Chances are, if you find yourself in a smoky bar watching a bunch of up-and-coming bands play their hearts out, multiple Mustangs will grace the stage.
Now, Wildwood Guitars is proud to present Fender’s latest entry in the Mustang’s storied history: the limited edition American Special Mustang. These offset-bodied beauties have a head-turning aesthetic, sporting either a mean, clean Olympic white finish or an au naturel gloss finish that highlights the killer grain on the ash body. Either paint job looks killer with the 4-ply tortoiseshell guard, and the Jazz Bass knobs complete the package.
We’re told from an early age not to judge books by their cover, but this is one instance where you can feel free to judge away, because these American Special Mustangs play and sound as good as they look! Two flaming-hot Fender Atomic Humbuckers kick out enough raucous rock and roll sounds to satisfy those looking for truly nuclear tone, but there’s more going on here than what immediately meets the ear. The shorter 24” scale puts less tension on the strings, which gives the guitar a warmer, fatter sound overall. This adds an uncommon depth and roundness to the sound of these ‘Stangs, which gives you tone that is as aggressive as it is musical. And, if you need to take things down a notch, you can use the push-pull volume knob to split the coils for a more traditional bright, spanky Mustang tone.
Speaking of scale length, let’s talk about how good these American Special Mustangs feel in your hands! Because there is less tension on the strings, these guitars have a slinky, malleable handfeel that allows for tremendously expressive lead playing and easy chording. The classic oval C-shaped neck is (as always) quite comfortable, and the modern 9.5” radius completes the package.
The team at Wildwood Guitars is proud to showcase the American Special Mustang for our exceptional customers, because it looks and sounds like nothing else out there. The Mustang has always been a favorite of innovators, free thinkers, and trendsetters, and we are excited to see what new trails it inspires you to blaze.
