Sonic Evaluation

Greg Fessler imbues each and every one of his guitars with a distinct personality, and this particular '62 Telecaster is smooth and muscular! The bridge pickup responds to your attack with immediate piano-like springiness, and though it has a midrange-forward voice, I'd hesitate to call it punchy. I'd rather say it hits your ear drum like a bowling ball: though it definitely packs a hefty wallop, it's quite round. Though you can pull some bite out of the mids, they are definitely smoother and broader than is normal. This gives each note lots of weight and presence, and it makes chords sound thick without sacrificing clarity.

By contrast, the neck pickup is much more mild-mannered, though no less inspiring. It has smooth, woody lows and glassy highs. There's also some vocal quack in the upper midrange that reminds me of a woodier, rounder Strat neck pickup. This sound is perfect for any and all things mellow and jazzy, and it's so clear that playing thick, distorted riffs is a joy.

Anyone looking for a Telecaster with a mellow neck pickup and a beefy bridge pickup will love this fearsome Fessler!

The Man Behind the Tone

Greg Fessler came to the Fender Custom Shop in 1990 and worked his way up through the ranks as an apprentice. He assisted with the Robben Ford signature line of guitars, eventually became the sole builder of those instruments, and finally wound up becoming Ford’s personal guitar-maker. Fessler has built one-off Stratocaster and Telecaster models for a host of players, including Joe Bonnamasa, Jeff Healey, Hank Marvin, John Mayer, Rhonda Smith, Neil Schon and Pete Wentz. Fessler’s remarkable abilities have earned him accolades from many Fender artists and discerning customers worldwide, and every instrument he builds exemplifies the meticulous attention to detail and intense commitment it takes to earn the title of Master Builder.
