The AAAAA Tiger fiddleback rock maple that forms the back and sides of this R-12 Deluxe looks stunning and sounds divine. It was a brilliant idea to pair this wood with Adirondack spruce with a 12-fret neck, too, because it resulted in a Froggy Bottom that sounds unlike anything else. It has all the characteristics we love in maple-bodied acoustics (a crystalline, chiming high end, exceptional articulation, hi-fi clarity, fast note decay, and superb note separation), but it manages to do so much more and defy your expectations of what maple can do.
For starters, it has lots of headroom. Sometimes, maple-bodied guitars can sound tinny when you flog them like a thoroughbred, but not this serial. Even when you lay into big chords with a flatpick, this R-12 Deluxe sounds open and three-dimensional. As you dig in harder and harder, more sugary-sweet sparkling overtones start to pop out of the trebles and mids. Even though you can get some serious jangle, it always maintains glassy clarity.
Maple is also known for having transparent, notched midrange, but not here! The 12-fret construction gives it an extra dose of warmth and punching power, which helps give this R-12 Deluxe a supremely balanced voice. The 12-fret neck also makes the guitar quite responsive to your right-hand dynamics, which makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience.
Low-end is also not usually maple's strong suit, but nobody told the guys at Froggy Bottom that! While no one will mistake this Froggy for a D-28, hitting the low E is quite satisfying because it has plenty of woody, dry, vintage-style depth.
Strummers looking for a sculpted-sounding guitar with a jangly, clear, chime-y voice with exceptional balance will love this serial. Fingerstyle players seeking maximum clarity and articulation in a guitar with a sweet, sunny voice will also find much to love here. However, it would be a true weapon for a player who uses both techniques, as it no weaknesses. But, anyone who loves the sound of maple will find this Froggy to be an inspiring companion on their acoustic adventures.
