Ball in the Family
Wildwoodians, we are downright giddy to announce that we have welcomed Ernie Ball Music Man into the Wildwood family. So, we thought it was appropriate to kick things off with a selection from the Ball Family Reserve. For those who are unfamiliar, the Ball Family Reserve is a line of limited-production guitars that showcase exceptional tonewoods, drool-inducing finishes, and extra-elegant designs. Previously, these fine instruments were only available to members of the Ball family and Ernie Ball Music Man's roster of artists, but Sterling Ball and his sons, Brian and Scott, have graciously offered them to the public. Each piece in the Ball Family Reserve is lovingly crafted using a combination of precise, state-of-the-art modern manufacturing techniques and time-consuming old-world methods that involve lots of good 'o-fashioned elbow grease. Each piece is also VERY limited, and once they're gone, they're gone. We are privileged to showcase such rare, exquisite instruments, and we are proud to welcome Ernie Ball Music Man to the Wildwood Family.
Hoo boy, this Cutlass rips! There are three main ingredients here: a percussive thwack of an attack, lots of note bloom after the thwack, and great balance among the blooming overtones. Overall, it has a rich, velvety timbre that sits near the middle of the Bright-Warm Spectrum (a highly technical term I just made up), though it looks a little bit more to the side of Hendrixian creaminess (always err on the side of Hendrixian creaminess, kids!). The bridge pickup is surprisingly muscular in the lows and the midrange packs a real karate kick, but it also has some nice sparkling resonance in the highs. The middle pickup is balanced and beefy, with a slight bump in the mids and a bit more transparent in the highs. The neck pickup is thick, warm and juicy like a 32oz. porterhouse, but it also has cutting, wailing upper mids that allow it to slice through a mix. Anyone looking for an S-Style guitar with fat resonance and percussive bite will love this Cutlass!
