Fender Custom Shop 2019 Collection 1961 Jazz Bass - Heavy Relic
Jazz Bass in Your FaceWildwoodians, we are proud to present another magnificent thud staff from the Fender Custom Shop's 2019 Collection: the 1961 Jazz Bass with heavy relic lacquer finish. Its combination of classic Fender vibe, delectable tone, and modern playability is sure to delight any low-end enthusiasts looking for an inspiring instrument. So, let's take a closer look and see what features allowed it to capture the heart of the Wildwood Bass Department so quickly!
Sweet Pickups, DudeIf I had to describe these hand-wound Jazz Bass pickups in one word, it would be "WOW!" Of course, since this is Wildwood's web site, I can't get away with describing this bass using just one word, so here are a few more apt descriptors for its stellar sound: warm, deep, round, full, balanced, woody, smooth, and touch-sensitive.
Though you can certainly get some classic Jazz bass clank when you dig in, the rosewood fretboard imparts a certain sweet compression that keeps this bass sounding round and mellifluous.
The neck pickup sounds like an angry upright, but it still produces a remarkably clear fundamental. By contrast, the bridge pickup has a bit more high-end gloss and a broad, punchy midrange, though it is certainly not lacking in muscular, tight low-end. With both pickups on full, the 1961 Jazz Bass sounds like the platonic ideal of Fender bass tone: rich across the whole frequency spectrum without any ugly frequencies or flub.
Low-End Butter Though the sound of the '61 Jazz Bass may be full of gristle, the feel is all butter. The Custom Shop Wizards at Fender chose to deck this bass out with a '60-style U-shaped Jazz Bass neck profile, which is one of the most comfortable profiles out there. The center of the neck has a gentle slope that allows you to achieve plenty of leverage in all positions on the neck. Also, the neck has a pleasing taper: its thin and narrow near the nut so you don't have to work as hard playing those demanding lines down low, but it tapers to a pleasing chunky feel up near the twelfth fret. Thanks to its comfy neck profile, its modern 9.5" radius, and its medium jumbo frets, playing this bass feels nearly effortless.
Bring the ThunderWe are proud to showcase such a thunderous instrument for the low-end lovers of the Wildwoodiverse. We believe that this super-fun '61 will bring any Jazz Bass aficionado a lifetime of inspiration, and we invite you to experience its joyous rumble by taking one for a spin today.
