Classic Looks. Timeless ToneLes Paul Customs are the sort of guitars that strike fear into the hearts of men. They're refined beasts, sure, but beneath that sophisticated veneer they're all rock and roll muscle. Needless to say, we're all huge Custom fans here at Wildwood, so we jumped at the chance to add one to the Wildwood Spec family! After many nerdy phone conversations about things like getting the color of the binding juuuuuuust right and countless hours of toil from the wizards at the Gibson Custom Shop, our latest entry in the Wildwood Spec series is finished!
The Wildwood Spec 1957 Les Paul Custom features a solid mahogany body for extra tonal heft and exceptional resonance. The ebony fingerboard is also attached with hot hide glue for improved energy transfer, so these guitars are quite loud and resonant when unplugged! Our Wildwood Spec Custom 'Buckers only improve this excellent natural tone by delivering sweet, vintage-perfect tone.
After paying so much attention to replicating the sound of the originals, we had to make sure they looked right, too! So, we equipped them with waffle-back tuners, gold hardware, and vintage-accurate plastics to complete the package. We are so proud of these Wildwood Spec 1957 Les Paul Customs, and we know you will find them just as inspiring as we do!
Tonal EvaluationThis killer Custom is a muscular, articulate monster! It sits adjacent to the Tele-On-Steroids portion of the Les Paul family tree, but it doesn't quite belong to that category. Though it is quite snappy and clear, and it does have crisp, vintage-style resonance, it sounds a little too beefy to compare it to a Fender on HGH. It has big, round lows that become delightfully wooly when you play through an overdriven amp, sugary-sweet trebles, and raspy, snarling midrange.
Honestly, the EQ curve reminds me of Demarcus Ware. Let me clarify: back when Demarcus Ware still played defensive end for the Broncos, he used to come into a shop I worked at, and he was really nice! Despite his enormity--he's 6'4, 260-some pounds--he looked like he was approximately .0001% body fat. He was strong enough to maul an offensive tackle, but he didn't really have any unnecessary weight.
This Les Paul also sounds huge yet lean. It has no unnecessary flub in its harmonic response, it responds quickly to player input, and it has a real mean streak! Anyone searching for a Les Paul that sounds like a terrifying defensive end will love this serial!
