Used 1998 Martin Limited Edition D-28LF Lester Flatt
Sonic EvaluationTo put it bluntly, this instrument will haunt me for a long, long time. If you like the tone of Brazilian rosewood and powerful dreadnought boom (and honestly, who doesn't?), it's hard to imagine a more ideal guitar than this one. It has a piano-like attack that gives way to glorious blooming resonance up across the board. The highs are sweet and full of glassy, shimmering overtones. The midrange is meaty, and it fills out more and more as you push the top harder. The low-end is howitzer-like, and it has the woody clarity you'd expect from a vintage instrument.
All in all, it's quite a marvelous Martin. It has rib-rattling power but it does not sacrifice clarity, and it sounds rich yet articulate. It's also dynamic enough for fingerstyle play, although it really shines when you strum away with a flatpick. Anyone looking for a Brazilian rosewood dreadnought should consider adding this lovely Lester Flatt D-28 to their quiver.
Condition ReportThis glorious limited-edition Martin is in excellent condition, and it shows very few signs of use other than some light fret wear and play wear. There was a small crack on the center seam of the top by the butt of the guitar, but it was professionally repaired by the good people at Woodsongs Lutherie in Boulder and does not affect the instrument's tone. It comes with its original tweed hardshell Martin case.
