It's Good to Be King

When you look at the Reverend Club King RB, it's easy to make assumptions. Two Retrobucker pickups, a Bigsby, and a semi-hollow body? It has to be the king of country and rockabilly, right? The truth is that--while the Club King excels enough at all things Southern-fried to make everybody Twang Chung tonight--it can sound at home in just about every genre from punk to blues to classic rock to jazz, too! It has a rich voice with lots of sustain, and it is also remarkably responsive and dynamic. Let's take a closer look and see what makes this guitar an all-around six-string king!

Solid Woods Lead to Sweet Tone

The fine folks at Reverend take great care to ensure that the Club King RT has a rich acoustic voice because that's the building block for a great semi-hollow. To ensure that this guitar sings out loud and proud, they built it out of all solid woods with no veneers or plywood. Each body's back, sides, and center block come from one piece of top-routed korina. Then, they glue a solid piece of spruce on to form the top. By using solid woods, Reverend ensures that the player gets acoustic-like touch-sensitivity and rich harmonic response.

From a sonic standpoint, spruce and korina work spectacularly well together. Korina has the punch and warmth of mahogany, but it has a livelier, sunnier high-end. Spruce has been the top of choice for acoustic guitars for centuries now because of its ability to project, its openness, and its balance between fundamental notes and overtones. Together, they produce a warm, well-defined tone with exceptional clarity and articulation and a little bit of extra edge and chime in the highs. All of this resonance serves as a wonderful building block for an electric guitar tone.

It's also worth noting that the Bigsby tailpiece adds a bit of extra growl to the attack and a bit of extra sweet bell-like chime in the high-end.

Rockin' Retrobuckers

The Club King comes outfitted with two of Reverend's Retrobucker mini-humbuckers, and they sound marvelous in the context of a semi-hollow guitar. The Retrobuckers have more of a focused punch in the midrange, tighter lows, and more brilliance and chime in the highs than a typical humbucker. Don't worry, they still have plenty of muscle, though!

In a semi-hollow, they provide quite a dynamic playing experience, too. Ease off, and they sound warm, sweet, and lush. When you dig in and get that spruce top moving, they start to snarl and bite beneath a bell-like high-end. Because the body is so thin, you don't have to play too hard to reach the top of its dynamic range, and it's easy to keep it there once you do. So, this guitar is wonderfully expressive, but you can also get a really consistent, even response if you just keep digging in a little bit!

Power to the Player

Reverend has kitted out Club King RT with a metric ton of appointments that enhance the player's experience and make it supremely reliable. The medium oval neck profile is home to 22 medium-jumbo frets and a fingerboard with a 12" radius, a configuration well-suited to most techniques and playing styles (and, it's especially good for bending strings). Also, it has pin-lock tuners and a Boneite nut to ensure excellent tuning stability, and it comes equipped with boutique-quality pots and caps and a Pure Tone jack for consistent sound. Finally, an angled six-bolt neck plate increases stability and resonance while allowing easy access to the upper frets.

In the Court of the Club King

We're proud to showcase the Reverend Club King, a versatile semi-hollow that can handle country, rock, blues, rockabilly, punk, metal, garage rock, indie music, and jazz with equal aplomb. Its solid-wood construction gives it maximum resonance, and its pickups manage to have a unique tone that fits well in numerous musical contexts--quite a feat! We would like cordially invite you to the club! Once you join, we're sure you'll agree that this Reverend is a true king.
