Lowden Guitars 35 Series F-35c 12-Fret
Sonic EvaluationTruly great acoustic guitars have the power to take you places, and this Lowden F-35c 12-fret sent me on one heck of a trip! As is often the case with these guitars, I sat down full intending to play it for ten minutes, write a quick blurb for the site, and move on. Alas, that never happens, because Lowdens are nigh-impossible to put down. I started fingerpicking in open D (a tuning that I'm not too familiar with) and started to focus and BOOM! Forty-five minutes had passed, and I had a bunch of new Open D licks. What impressed me most about this serial was how quickly and completely it commanded my focus and concentration. For my whole playing session, I was in an almost meditative state, thinking about nothing but the fretboard and strings. I can't remember the last time I got so thoroughly lost in the delights of an acoustic guitar!
So, what is it about this guitar that made my brain wander off into the ether? The attack is delightful: round and consistent, but with plenty of capacity for percussiveness. It also can get pretty raunchy when you really dig in!
The bass response certainly motivated me to get lost, too. This guitar has my favorite sort of low-end. Low notes have a sonorous, open quality that would remind me of a male operatic baritone if it weren't so woody and organic.
This works nicely with the highs, which are muscular and full with a sweet, glassy, silvery timbre. Because this guitar has such meaty highs and such mellifluous lows, alternating between bass and treble notes is a simple, addictive joy.
By contrast, the midrange is warm and present, but it has a more transparent, clear quality.
This guitar also has plenty of clarity, but part of the magic lies in how well the notes blend. Striking a maj7 chord and letting the overtones mingle as they bloom will give you goosebumps!
As with many Lowdens, this 35 Series sweetheart loves flatpicks and fingers equally. Because of its versatile body size and impressive resonance, it would make an excellent instrument for anyone looking for a do-it-all acoustic. I am sure some lucky acoustic adventurer will spend the rest of their life getting lost in the sweet sounds of this F-35c 12-fretter--I know I did!
