Limited to only 2000 pieces, this run of Rickys were a tribute to John Lennon's original 325, but with a twist. Unlike Lennon's three-quarter-scale original, the 355JL has a 24.75" scale length to accommodate players more used to traditional long-scale instruments. As a result, it is highly comfortable to play!

Sonically, it's an absolute joy. The three vintage toaster pickups in this bad boy nail the classic Rickenbacker chime and jangle. Close your eyes and crank up your amp and you might feel like you've been transported to a small club in Hamburg in 1962. The bridge pickup has tons of sparkle and bite, the middle pickup is sweeter with a broader midrange response, and the neck pickup is righteously smooth and warm with a lovely sunny high end. It's also supremely touch-sensitive! It sounds warm and glassy when you play softly, then the glass breaks in the best possible way when you dig in.

Though it nails the classic jangle of the British Invasion, this guitar can also rock quite hard. Just for funsies, I plugged it into a pinned dirty channel, and it absolutely roared--easily the best rock tone I've gotten in some time! So, while this guitar may be a bit of a collector's item, don't get it twisted: it's a sonic powerhouse that's awfully difficult to put down.

The aesthetic details are all there, too. However, all parties were forced to at least reconsider after hearing this magnificent '65 P Bass with an Olympic White finish that has aged unbelievably well (all that checking, and the patina...mmmmm). Apart from looking cooler than a polar bear's toenail, it sounds jaw-dropping.

First off, it's amazing the range of sounds you can get just by altering your velocity and technique. The attack is round and springy with some delicious musical compression that really makes the percussive quality of the attack come through. When you play with a light touch, this P Bass sounds warm and piano-like. When you dig in, it snarls more, but it mostly becomes more present. The notes stay round and punchy with an open-throated quality even when you play aggressively. However, you can significantly increase the volume based on the power of your attack, and that gives this bass a huge dynamic range, which makes for a delightfully expressive playing experience.

Frequency-response wise, the low-end is monstrous, the midrange packs a wide punch, and the highs are unbelievably fat and sweet. It has lots of awesome checking and other battle scars that tell the story of a bass that has been a workhorse for much of its life. All parts appear to be original and function well (although the E string tuner is a little sloppy, it's not bad by any means). The frets show some moderate wear--always a sign that a vintage piece is hard to put down! Simply put, this new round-shouldered beast is one of the most inspiring new guitar designs to emerge in the last decade. Though many of Taylor's classic cornerstones inform its design, the Grand Pacific sounds and feels like nothing else in their entire line. It's revolutionary, it's bold, it's fresh, it's imaginative, and above all, it is sure to inspire you to reach new heights on your journeys across the fretboard. I (Trevor, the resident Wildwood Guitar Scribe) would like to cordially invite you to journey down the rabbit hole with me and learn a bit more about what makes the Grand Pacific so spectacular.

California Dreamin'

Before we get into the specific delights the 517e has to offer, let's take a step back and talk about what the Grand Pacific body style is and what benefits it offers the player. I was lucky enough to learn straight from the source, because our friends at Taylor were kind enough to fly me out to San Diego to visit their factory in El Cajon and learn about the Grand Pacific from Andy Powers himself. Andy Powers is everything you'd hope him to be. He brims with warmth and intelligence, and he is a truly fearsome guitar picker. After setting the fretboard ablaze as he put a Grand Pacific through its paces, he shed some light on what inspired him to build the guitar in the first place. While Andy was doing a bunch of work on his new home, he found himself listening to a lot of classic acoustic music: bluegrass, country, and folk. Now, Andy was a renowned repairman before he started work at Taylor. Though he's too modest to name names, he personally worked on many historic guitars that made appearances on iconic records. As he listened to these albums, he reflected on the time he spent with these classic instruments. Oddly enough, many of them left him wanting something more when he sat down with them. They just didn't sound like the record! Why? The wheels in Andy's head started turning, and he started dreaming. How could he design an acoustic guitar that sounded like a record in the room? The seed that would grow into the Grand Pacific began to sprout.

The Birth of V-Class

To tell the story of the Grand Pacific, we have to pick up the story of V-Class bracing. Though V-Class bracing made its commercial debut in Taylor's Grand Auditorium guitars, Andy Powers actually came up with the idea for the Grand Pacific. V-Class bracing is truly revolutionary, and it is one of the reasons for the Grand Pacific's greatness. You see, for years acoustic guitar builders had to compromise between volume and sustain. Flexibility equals volume, and stiffness equals sustain. Obviously, a piece of wood cannot be rigid and flexible at the same time, so builders had to go for one or the other. Andy Powers wanted to have his cake and eat it, too. After much tinkering, V-Class bracing was his elegant solution to the problem that has plagued luthiers for centuries. As the name implies, V-Class bracing features two long pieces of wood that make a "V" shape together. The bracing is quite thin and flexible near the rear bout, but it becomes thicker as you get closer to the soundhole. So, you get volume from the flexible parts of the bracing, and sustain from the rigid parts! Many areas of the guitar neck that typically sound weak (ninth fret on the G string, for instance) have just as much presence, resonance, and sustain as the low E. As a result, the Grand Pacific sounds supremely balanced.

Intonation Station

V-Class bracing also does wonders for the guitar's intonation. Are you ready to have your mind blown? When I was in El Cajon, Andy explained that an acoustic guitar's intonation is not necessarily just the sum of the typical adjustments like saddle height, nut slots, and neck angle (though they do play a part). The way that the actual guitar itself vibrates also has a lot to do with how in-tune it sounds. Andy told me to picture it like this: when you take close-up slow-motion footage of a guitar's top with a high-speed camera as someone plays it, you can see the top move vividly. On a traditional X-braced guitar, the top vibrates in a disorderly, disjointed manner. This can cause a guitar with the perfect saddle height and neck angle to sound out of tune when you play a big open chord. By contrast, guitars with V-Class bracing vibrate in a much more orderly manner. The graduated braces compel the energy from the player's attack to move from the thin outer part of the bracing to the thicker inner part in an efficient manner. If you were to take a high-speed shot of a V-Class top, you would see it rock back and forth evenly. Because of that V-Class magic, the Grand Pacific sounds so in-tune that it's scary.

A Metaphor for Monster Sound

So, how does V-Class bracing sound in the context of a classic dreadnought? Andy loves to talk in metaphors, and he shared one really crystallized my understanding of the Grand Pacific's tone. Imagine a six-lane highway with six cars traveling side-by-side in their respective lanes. That's how a Grand Auditorium with V-Class bracing sounds. You can hear each note ring out pure and clear with excellent separation. The Grand Pacific's is more like six boats traveling side by side. Though the boats don't crash into one another, their wakes interact behind them. When you strum all six strings on a Grand Pacific, the notes "run together" and blend in a way that is symmetrical and orderly but also warm and inviting. Andy kept calling it a "seasoned" sound, and that's an apt description. The notes bleed into one another and form beautiful vivid, colorful timbres.

Post-Production Magic

The reason why most of the iconic guitars Andy repaired left him feeling disappointed is simple: a lot usually happens to acoustic tracks in post-production. Typically, a mixing engineer will use an EQ to roll off woofy low end and cut other "problem frequencies" that sound ugly. They'll then use a compressor to round off the attack, and a limiter to kill any remaining transients. So, that guitar that sounded gloriously rich in the room during the recording winds up sounded sculpted and well-mannered on the actual record. Thanks to its V-Class bracing, the Grand Pacific sounds like much of this post-production work is already done as you play it live in the room. Here's the best way to explain it, again courtesy of the illustrious Mr. Powers. Put an open palm in front of your mouth and say "PUH PUH PUH PUH PUH" repeatedly (don't do this in public or you will look foolish). Then say "MM MM MM MM MM" into your palm. Typical dreadnoughts make that "PUH" noise upon attack as woofy low-end escapes the soundhole. The Grand Pacific makes more of a "MM" sound. It may not rattle your rattle your ribs, but it does sound awfully nice-iconic, even. Therein lies both the rub and the magic with the Grand Pacific: though it has plenty of muscle and power, it doesn't necessarily sound like a wooden piano in the room. It sounds produced, and there's a big difference. For that reason, it's not going to replace your J-45 or your D-18. Big-sounding, boomy acoustics are a lot of fun, and we love them, too. The Grand Pacific just presents a whole new flavor of acoustic tone that is different but equally enticing. Playing one feels like stepping into a classic record that hasn't been made yet.

Add it Up

So, what does it all add up to, sonically? The Grand Pacific sounds warm, seasoned, and inviting like a classic dreadnought as warm overtones swirl together and mix to form a truly spectacular collage of sound. But, V-Class bracing also gives it a spectacular combination of volume and sustain. Furthermore, V-Class bracing helps sculpt the Grand Pacific's frequency response to sound balanced and mannered. Not to mention, it helps give the Grand Pacific astoundingly accurate intonation. So, to sum things up: the Grand Pacific is a warm, vintage-style dreadnought with improved volume, sustain, balance, and intonation. I don't know about you, but I'll trade a little bass boom for all that any day of the week!

The Delights of Adirondack Spruce

Here at Wildwood, we love Adirondack spruce the way the narrator of the Percy Sledge song "When a Man Loves a Woman" loves the titular woman: fervently, and with our whole heart. Adirondack spruce has a few inspiring signature sonic quirks, and we love the way it adds flavor when used for bracing. But first, a crash course in headroom: every acoustic guitar top has a point at which it can't get louder. When an acoustic guitar reaches this point, the guitar starts becoming more and more compressed as the player hits harder. The longer it takes for a guitar to reach this point of compression (I like to call it The Point of No Return), the higher its headroom. Furthermore, Adirondack spruce bracing tends to impart a woody, percussive quality to the guitar's attack. Subtle right-hand dynamics come through with exceptional fidelity and detail, but it's not a sterile sort of hi-fi sound. So, this guitar has a clear, organic, bold attack that asserts itself with incredible power.

Smitten With the Builder's Edition

This particular model is a Builder's Edition 517e. It can go from righteously smooth to downright dangerous depending on your mood, and that makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience.

If you're seeking a monster Jazz Bass, everyone in the Wildwood Bass Department believes you owe it to yourself to take this one for a spin, because it is truly magnificent. We have no doubt you'll love it as much as we do!

Condition Report

This 1973 Jazz Bass sounds massive and is dripping with vintage mojo! It shows the typical wear we expect to see on an instrument of its age (checking, scratches, chips, dings, burn-throughs, etc.) and it looks super-cool. A previous owner drilled a hole in the back (likely for a strap button), and one small area by the control plate has been touched up, probably a long time ago. All of the parts look to be original, although it looks like the pickups have been removed and re-installed at some point. The frets also look original, and they show moderate wear. A previous owner replaced the plastic nut with one made of bone, improving the resonance and sustain. Finally, there are some small cosmetic cracks in the fingerboard that do not affect its stability. They look like they've been there a long time. And, to top it off, it comes with its original hardshell case!

Condition Report

This Wildwood Spec '58 Les Paul is in pristine, near-new condition with barely any signs of use. It may look unfamiliar (and you find yourself asking "What the heck is a Theodore?"), but that's because it's an entirely new model! Well, kind of...you see, Gibson president Theodore "Ted" McCarty was one of the driving forces that brought Gibson to the forefront of electric guitar culture in the 1950s, and he did so in part by championing all sorts of futuristic models like the Explorer and the Flying V. This model is based on a concept he came up with that was never put into production. So, it's simultaneously old and new! Though it's certainly a collector's item (only 318 were made!), it also absolutely rips--after all, there are few things in this world better than a Gibson Custom Shop guitar with P-90s! There might be, but after sitting down with the Gibson Custom Shop Theodore, I'd be hard-pressed to name any examples (yep, they rip hard enough to cause temporary amnesia!). They're super touch-sensitive: if you play softly, they have a beautiful glassy tone, and when you dig in all sorts of sparkling overtones bloom, creating a beautiful crunch 'n' punch combo. The Theodore's bridge pickup can snarl, jangle, or twang depending on your mood, and the neck pickup is devastatingly thick and rich, although it remains articulate enough for full six-string chords. All in all, the Theodore stands as an exemplar of P-90 tone, and it will inspire you to crank up the volume and play loud!

Condition Report

This Gibson Custom Shop Theodore from the Archive Collection is in beautiful condition, and it shows hardly any signs of use. Evolving from the revered EVH 5150III amplifiers, the Iconic Series delivers the searing sound and growling gain that Eddie Van Halen made famous throughout his groundbreaking career.

Designed by renowned amp engineer James Brown, the 5150 Iconic Series 80W Head is powered by four 6L6 power tubes and voiced by a complex, multi-stage hybrid preamp section anchored by a duet of ECC83 tubes providing all the firepower the modern guitarist needs in a simple to use format.

This head features two channels with an extra voicing on each for even more versatility. Known as the Iceman, Albert Collins spread his signature brand of Texas blues all over the world, and he did it all with a natural-finish humbucker-equipped 1966 Telecaster Custom tuned to open F Minor. This Custom Shop creation is a loving tribute to that guitar, and we are happy to report that it does a stellar job of replicating the Iceman's sound. One of 96 000-21s made in 1943, this serial is part of a flock of rare birds, and it sounds revelatory. The rich resonance of real Brazilian rosewood gives it uncommon depth and fullness, and the Adirondack spruce top gives it outstanding articulation, headroom, and projecting power. When you factor in the seasoning that comes from eight decades of play to those spectacular tonewoods, the end result is a guitar that does the Vintage Martin Thing (supreme woodiness) but also has outstanding richness and complexity. Anyone hunting for a vintage Martin would do well to check this serial out, as we believe its impressive sonic qualities will inspire you to no end.

Condition Report

Any guitar that has been on this ball of dirt and water as long as this Martin will accumulate some repairs and battle scars, but this serial is in fantastic cosmetic shape for its vintage. It has some bumps and scrapes, but there's nothing particularly egregious. There are a few repaired cracks with old-school diamond cleats, the most noticeable of which are on the top by the treble-side lower bout and by the pickguard near the high E string. It also has some non-original parts, as the bridge, the bridge plate, frets, nut, and saddle have all been replaced (the original bridge, some of the older nuts, some non-original Waverly tuners, and a non-original bridge plate are in the case). The original ebony fretboard was replaced by the experts at Woodsongs Lutherie, who were able to preserve the original snowflake inlays in the new fretboard. The new nut and saddle are made of ivory, though, which is a neat touch! We're not sure if the bridge pins are original, but they are clearly old, and they have been in this guitar for a long time. Finally, a previous owner installed a strap button on the heel. It responds to your attack with a lovely sweet squish that highlights your right-hand technique with exceptional articulation before giving way to that classic bell-like note bloom vintage Strats are beloved for. The bridge pickup is quite snappy with a focused bit in the midrange and twangy lows, and it makes me want to play funk rhythms, aggressive chords, jangly chords, and twangy, snarl leads. The middle position has a broader midrange response and fatter lows for a more muscular, warmer tone. Finally, the neck pickup does that chewy, vocal Hendrixian thing while also being clear enough to use for rhythm parts that need to get down with the thickness. All in all, it's a spectacular example of a vintage Strat, and it will make some lucky Fender fanatic one happy guitar picker!

Condition Report

This '74 Strat is also quite clean, but it does appear to be assembled out of components from different years. The body and neck plate are from '74, but the neck appears to be from a '76, and the pickguard, pots, and pickups look like they're from '77. To accomodate the '77 pickguard, a previous owner enlarged the screw-holes with a tool or drill, and some of the holes can't hold screws. Regardless of what year it is, it's an amazing guitar! It shows less wear than you'd expect from a guitar of this vintage, although there are a couple of noticeable areas of finish disruption on the top and back. It has a vintage flavor reminiscent of the carved-top guitars of yesteryear, but with modern clarity and sparkle--a lovely combo! The attack has just the right amount of vintage sag before blooming into its full, powerful resonance. The lows are big but have a woody clarity, the trebles sing beautifully, and the midrange bites and punches like Mike Tyson. The neck pickup sounds fat but is clear enough for rhythm work, and the bridge pickup has a focused punch and sweet chiming overtones. One name kept popping up over and over on these old patents: Ted McCarty. Paul did a bit more digging and found that Ted McCarty was Gibson's president from 1950 to 1966. During that time, he used his considerable engineering experience to help develop dozens of innovative designs that shaped the electric guitar into what it is today. Over the course of the McCarty era, Gibson went from selling 5,000 instruments a year to 100,000 a year. Ted clearly knew a thing or two about building guitars and about running a guitar company. So, Paul decided to reach out to Ted and ask for an interview so he could pick his brain a little. Ted obliged him, and that interview blossomed into a decades-long friendship. They became such good buddies that Paul decided to honor Ted by designing a guitar using all of the tips and techniques he'd gleaned from their conversations. Naturally, he named the guitar after his friend. The PRS McCarty had arrived. Ever since its birth in 1994, the McCarty model has inspired countless players with its blend of vintage tone and modern playability. It's also a fitting tribute to Ted McCarty and his friendship with Paul Reed Smith. Throughout the years, Paul's tireless drive to innovate has produced several delectable additions to the McCarty line: the McCarty 594, the McCarty SC 594, and the McCarty 594 Hollowbody II. After all, you can't rest on your laurels when you've named a guitar after one of the greatest six-string innovators ever to live! We believe that each model combines the best qualities of old and new in one art museum-worthy package. Wildwood Guitars is proud to showcase the fruit of Paul and Ted's excellent adventure: the PRS McCarty. The McCarty's excellence is a testament to the powers of collaboration and friendship. It's proof that when two brilliant people who enjoy one another's company roll up their sleeves and get to work, magnificent things happen. We invite you to try out this fabulous instrument and see how it inspires you. Whatever the case may be, this '26 Martin 00-28 12-fret sounds glorious! It's all there: old-world craftsmanship, legendary tonewoods, and the kind of sonic seasoning that can only come from almost a hundred years of musical service. Oftentimes, we say that vintage guitars have been "broken in" like a pair of blue jeans, but this Martin goes beyond that. Nearly a century of play has opened up its voice and given it a truly amazing vintage woody characteristic, although to be honest, it would still probably sound cool if it was brand-new--such is the power of Brazilian rosewood back and sides combined with an Adirondack spruce top!

The Adirondack spruce produces a powerful fundamental, boosts the guitar's headroom and projecting power, and enhances articulation, while Brazilian rosewood...well, look up "richness" or "piano-like" in the dictionary and you'll get a rough idea of this legendary tonewood's power! Beyond that, the 12-fret construction boosts responsiveness and adds a natural reverberance and fullness to the tone.

This serial is a marvelous example of the tone of both woods! It boasts a powerful, broad bass response and open, sonorous midrange. The highs are glassy and sweet, with plenty of sparkle as you dig in. It's one of those small-bodied guitars that punches far above its weight class. It's astonishing how beefy each note sounds, yet when you strum full chords it remains clear and balanced. Overall, it sounds how you expect a guitar three times its size would, but with the responsiveness of a and clarity of a small body.

All in all, this 1926 00-28 12-fret is one of the mightiest acoustic stallions we've ever had the privilege of showcasing, and we have no doubt it will inspire some lucky acoustic aficionado to embark on all sorts of exciting fretboard adventures!

Condition Report

This monster Martin is in awesome shape, especially considering it's 'pert-near a century old! The Wildwood 10 1955 Stratocasters pay homage to these legendary original Strats by replicating crucial details like the one-ply pickguard, dot inlays, resonant ash bodies, and maple necks. Many have also been lovingly relic'd by the masterful Custom Shop team, so they have oodles of vintage vibe. Here's a quick rundown of what makes them tick. They're slightly underwound, which gives them exceptional dynamic response and touch sensitivity. You can really alter your sound based on how hard you're hitting, which makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience. However, they are wound with thicker wire like Fender did in the sixties, which gives them a little more power and guts despite being underwound. As a result, their voice is similar to vintage Strat pickups we love with lots of bell-like chime and vocal response, but with a little extra warmth and muscle.

Although they are not exactly the same as a real vintage example, we think they capture the magic sound of a great vintage Strat, giving you access to the iconic sound that shaped countless classic records. We have no doubt they will make your heartstrings resonate!

Condition Report

This Fender is in fabulous shape! While kids everywhere jostled one other in front of the TV set for a chance to play the first iteration of Pong, adults everywhere saw the tale of the Watergate scandal unfold on the evening news.

The musical world was in tumult, too, and the upheaval caught Fender off guard. Led Zeppelin had dethroned the Beatles as the biggest band on Earth, and David Bowie debuted a new stage persona modeled after Lou Reed and Iggy Pop that he called Ziggy Stardust. The sound of a humbucker-equipped guitar plugged into a Marshall amplifier was the de facto sound of rock and roll, and Fender was nervous that their single-coils wouldn't be able to keep up with the demands of rockers looking for meaty tones.

Stealing Seth

So, the geniuses at Fender worked out a plan: they'd entice legendary pickup-winding wizard Seth Lover to jump ship from Gibson to Fender and have him design a world-beating humbucking pickup. Then, they'd develop a Telecaster that bore a passing resemblance by Keith Richards's legendary blackguard named Micawber (a Tele routed for a humbucker in the neck position).

They executed their scheme to perfection, and the legend of the '72 Telecaster Custom was born. The pickups that Seth Lover designed for these terrifying Teles-which he dubbed Wide-Range Humbuckers-have such an incomparable tone that original examples sometimes fetch three, four, or even five hundred dollars on the open marketplace.

And they deserve their price tag and their reputation, because they're a big part of the Tele Custom's magic. Wide-Range humbuckers sound unlike any other double-coil pickup on the planet. They have a remarkably snappy attack, whereas more traditional PAF-style 'buckers give the front end of your notes a rounder, more pillowy quality.

After that unmistakably crisp attack, the Wide-Range humbucker sings with a voice that is warm and creamy yet clear and articulate, and it has an open, airy top-end. You can get a delightfully rich, full sound out of a Wide-Range, but they never sound muddy or flabby. Even in the neck position, you can strum away on open chords through an overdriven amp and hear every note ring out clearly.

A Rock and Roll Duet

This thick-yet-crystalline tone works beautifully with the snappy, sizzling midrange bite of the traditional Tele bridge pickup, and these complementary voicings make this guitar quite versatile. You have all of your jangle, bite, and squawk in your bridge pickup, and a perfect thick rock tone in your neck position.

Speaking of pickup selection, Tele Custom's extra set of tone and volume controls allow you to dial in some extraordinarily cool tones in the middle position-one of the Wildwood Staff's favorite tricks is to roll back the tone all the way on the bridge pickup to get a scorching take on Clapton's "Woman Tone."

Thinskin for the Win

Given the storied history of these six-strings, it was an enormous honor to work with Fender to help design a '72 Telecaster Custom for our line of Thin Skins. We believe that the modern Wide Range Humbucking pickup in the neck position captures the essence of the vintage originals with exceptional accuracy, to say nothing of the screaming tones produced by the hand-wound Twisted Tele in the bridge.

Of course, the lightweight ash bodies come with a thin nitrocellulose finish, just like a Fender from the 1950s. This allows the bodies to "breathe" and resonate more freely, giving you fuller, more three-dimensional tone and longer sustain.

Despite their vintage roots, these Teles are as modern as can be when it comes to feel. The '70s-style D-shaped neck has plenty of shoulder to dig into for big bends, and it is just as comfortable for those who employ a more traditional thumb-in-the-middle left-hand technique as it is for those who wrap their thumbs over the top of the fretboard a la Hendrix. It also sports a modern 9.5" radius and 6105 frets, so modern players with a taste for vintage mojo will feel right at home.

We invite you to experience the magic of 1972 by playing one of these terrific Telecaster Customs. They prove that musical tumult can inspire innovation of the highest order, and we believe that their singular yet versatile voice will motivate you to stretch your practice sessions out for hours on end every time you pick one up. The Harp setting is warm and throaty, with a broad midrange response, deep low-end, and righteously smooth highs. The Hawaiian setting is pretty much the exact midpoint between those tones--Goldilocks Mode engaged!

However, descriptions of frequency response profiles don't really do this instrument justice. It has the power to evoke place, time, and feeling in an almost cinematic way, and it sings like a blues singer of yore. Guitar players have been ripping the pickups out of old National lap steels for decades, and after roughly 2.5 seconds of hearing this serial, you'll understand why! If you're already a lap steel player, this guitar will be a formidable tool, but it's also an exceptional value, so it would make an incredible instrument to learn the trade with, too. The sixties were also an exciting time for Stratocaster design, as Leo and company outfitted them with rosewood fretboards for the first time. The rosewood produced a sweet attack that spoke to everyone from Hendrix to SRV! Our Wildwood 10 1961 Stratocasters pay tribute to the great Strat boom of the sixties, and we think they embody the sweet sounds of that era to a T. We have a wide variety of colors, relic'd finishes, and neck profiles on tap, so we invite you to browse away and find a Strat that plucks your heartstrings.

Your support has allowed our friends at Fender to really break new ground and create something fresh, exciting, and bold. However, given that the concept of a "Relic-Ready" finish is relatively new to the world of guitars, we wanted to add some notes to clarify what you should expect from a Relic-Ready instrument.

Relic-Ready finishes are much, much different than NOS finishes because they only have three or four layers of clear coat. Because the finish is so incredibly thin, Relic-Ready instruments begin the natural relic-ing process the moment they are fully assembled. Since these finishes are designed to wear quickly, sometimes Relic-Readies arrive at our shop having already begun their journey to vintage mojo. So, you can expect things like light dings, small spots where the finish has burned through, light scratching, and checking in the neck pocket. However, you can be assured that your instrument will NOT have any full-body checking from weather, deep scratches, or major dings/blemishes. As always, if you'd like more information about the condition of each particular serial, please don't hesitate to reach out for an in-hand description.

With Relic-Readies, our idea was to allow the player to write their own story into the finish of each guitar. But, sometimes the process of getting the guitar to you adds a little foreword to the finish to help you get started. For more information about all things Relic-Ready, read on!

Relic-Ready to Rumble

Over the years, Wildwood Guitars has sold thousands of relic'd Fender guitars. The incredible response that we've gotten from our Wildwood Tens is proof that most of the guitar-playing world loves instruments that marry modern convenience with vintage look, feel, and sound. We've also learned that there are plenty of pickers out there that like the distressed vintage look, but feel a little strange about playing a guitar that they didn't relic themselves through everyday use. For these guitarists, each ding and scratch is a punctuation mark in the story of their instrument, and they want to be in charge of what happens in the tale of their axe.

Obviously, this is easier said than done. If you want to make an NOS finish look vintage through good 'ol fashioned playwear, you usually have to play it for so long that it actually becomes vintage in the process. You could put your guitar in a trash bag of burned leaves and relic it yourself like one of my coworkers, but your house will smell horrible the moment you bring it inside. Frankly, few people have enough resources, energy, or training to make it look as good as the Fender Custom Shop's builders can.

So, these players have been in a pickle until now. How do you make a new guitar look vintage without having to wait thirty years or resort to crazy schemes involving bags of burning leaves? Well, we at Wildwood Guitars are proud to introduce our answer: a new line of Wildwood Tens that we have dubbed "relic-readies."

These Custom Shop creations are just like the heavy-relic guitars that have been a shop staple for years-same wood, same electronics, same hardware, and same outstanding build quality-except we snatch them away from Fender before they have a chance to actually do the relic job. The result is a guitar that accumulates wear-and-tear at an exponentially higher rate than normal. So, it'll look like a guitar that's been gigged for thirty years after just a couple birthdays. Finally, YOU can be the one to make your guitar look vintage!

After playing and ogling the first batch of these guitars, we feel confident that this line is easily one of the coolest collaborations in the history of our friendship with Fender's Custom Shop! At Wildwood, we've been doing our best to tell our guitars' stories as faithfully as we can for thirty-four years. Now, we are excited to step aside and give the reins to our exceptional customers. What sort of interesting tales will you carve into these finishes? We can't wait to find out with you!

The Perfect 10

Years ago, we approached our friends at the Fender Custom Shop with a proposal: would they build us guitars that combined the mojo of a true-to-vintage reissue with modern handfeel and comfy modern ergonomics? Though the Stratocaster became a runaway hit after hitmakers like Buddy Holly toted them on stage, Leo Fender's tireless commitment to excellence led him to introduce a number of improvements to the Stratocaster's design. In a quest to cater to players' demands, he introduced a soft V-shaped neck profile, and he started building some of the bodies out of alder. Our Wildwood 10 1957 Stratocasters pay homage to Leo Fender's relentless work ethic by replicating the glories of the original heavenly '57s. We have a wide variety of finishes with various types of relic-ing and lots of neck profiles, so we're sure you'll be able to find a '57 that speaks to you. We invite you to browse our selection and experience the myriad delights the Wildwood 10 1957 Stratocaster has to offer.

Pickup Rundown

We believe that the Wildwood 10 Strat pickups our friends at Fender wind for us are some of the finest single-coils in the world. I LOVE this guitar! First things first: this guitar is unbelievably acoustically resonant. It's louder than some laminate-bodied acoustics, and that means massive tone when you do plug in.

Tonally, the best comparison I can make is a great vintage SG, but with more airiness, openness, sparkle, and clarity. It has that gut-punch crunch in spades, but it also has a wonderful bouquet of overtones that come together to create a lush, three-dimensional sound. Though it sounds as rich as Scrooge McDuck, it also has superb note separation, allowing you to play six-string chords with lots of gain in the neck position and hear each note clearly. The attack also captures the percussive detail of your pick strike while simultaneously rounding off any harsh edges or spiky frequencies. The attack also has a bit of vintage-style sag, meaning that after the pick strike, the note "blooms" forth in a musical, inspiring way.

The bridge pickup is about as good as it gets. As Wildwood's resident bridge pickup enthusiast, I keep a ranking of best bridge pickup tones in each category (Filter'tron, P-90, humbucker, etc.) in my head, and this one is near the top of the humbucker heap. It's punchy, snarly, open, and has tons of sparkle to balance out the muscular low-end. As much fun as I had running wild in the bridge position, I found myself in the neck just as much. It has this wonderfully rich yet clear sound that makes lead lines sound as fat and juicy as a hog roasting over an open fire and rhythm parts feel Godzilla-sized. It definitely makes my list of favorite vintage guitars of all time, that's for sure! It comes from a time when Epiphone was Gibson's "tester line." If a shop wanted to become a Gibson dealer, they had to become an Epiphone dealer first and prove they could sell through their inventory. Once they had sold enough Epiphones, they could begin carrying Gibsons. The Epiphones from this time period are highly sought-after by collectors and players alike, as they were built in the same plant by the same people with the same materials as Gibson. So, this guitar is essentially an ES-335 with mini-hums!

And my oh my, what a glorious combination. Mini-humbuckers still sound meaty like humbuckers, but with all the fat trimmed off. They're sculpted and muscular, with world-beating punching power and jaw-dropping articulation in the attack. They also have an open quality to them, and they're very touch-sensitive--you can really alter the way this guitar sounds with how you attack and squeeze the note, which makes for a very expressive, dynamic playing experience. It feels like this guitar is an extension of your hand!

The bridge pickup is a desert island sound for me: robust enough to make chords feel full and robust but tight and focused, with superb bite, snarl, chime, and sparkle. It's fatter and has a broader midrange punch, extended low-end, and sweet, sunny trebles, but it's still remarkably clear with no tubbiness or mud.

If you're looking for a spectacular vintage semi-hollow, I think this one will leave you as gobsmacked, flabbergasted, and dazed as me!

Condition Report

This '65 Sheraton is in fantastic shape! I always say Strats fall on a scale of Hendrix to Gilmour, and this one leans firmly to the dark side of the moon.

In concrete terms, that means it's bright and sunny but without any icepick-y harsh frequencies, just pleasant, sweet chime. The highs sizzle and sparkle, the midrange is throaty and vocal, and the lows are substantial but not so much as to upset the guitar's balance. The bridge pickup stings like a bee and floats like a butterfly with its focused bite beautiful jangle, the middle pickup brings more midrange grunt and gets glassier and smoother, and the neck pickup is righteously thick and chewy.

If you're looking for a fantastic example of a sunny-sounding Strat, check this serial out!

Condition Report

This Wildwood Spec SG is in beautiful condition! It comes with its original hardshell case and a certificate of authenticity, too.

The Wildwood Spec SG: A True Sonic Titan

If it weren't for the Gibson SG, I sincerely doubt I'd be sitting here writing words for all you lovely people of the Wildwoodiverse to read about our Wildwood Spec SGs. Like many guitar nerds, I had no choice but to give my life to rock and roll after I heard the proverbial One Guitar; in my case, it was Angus Young's SG. Once my dad played me Back in Black when I was six, it was all over. It probably had something to do with the riffs (AC/DC does know a thing or two about songwriting), but the SG's tone and appearance have always spoken to me on an elemental level.

Though it has plenty of muscle, it sounds less like a bodybuilder and more like a scary dude in a leather jacket picking his teeth with a switchblade. And, it has a sensitive side. Though there's an exciting rawness and attitude to the SG's sound, it never loses its inherent woody warmth. It may be raw, but it has plenty of range. So, in Tommy Iommi's hands, the SG snarls like a hellhound. In Derek Trucks's hands, the SG cries like a female blues singer from the Delta circa 1927. What's the common thread? Both players aim to bottle raw, intense emotion with their playing, and the SG is the perfect instrument for the job.

Because the SG wears its heart on its horns, it's a guitar that I love deeply, and the Wildwood Spec version is my personal favorite example of the model. We'll get to tech specs later, but I want to help you understand the deeper reasons why Wildwood Spec SGs are such wonderful instruments, the ones that go beyond fret size and pickup output. The SG is so deeply intertwined with my life and my musical journey that I need to tell part of my own story to properly tell the story of the Wildwood Spec SG. If you just want to hear about the nuts and bolts of these mahogany-bodied monsters, feel free to skip ahead to the second-to-last header. But, it's a compelling story-I promise.

My Solid Guitar Story

The SG seems to pull raw, unadulterated, pure music out of people, and that's why I bought one before I moved to Colorado four years ago. At that point, I had mostly given up on music after joint problems made playing nearly impossible. Though my body had recovered, the creative spark was gone. I still loved listening to music, but I didn't really feel any desire to play. I had read a biography of jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and one of his favorite pieces of advice for aspiring musicians stuck with me: if you don't hear music in your head, don't pick up your instrument. That seemed reasonable to me, and since I didn't hear anything, I stopped playing. Better to sit in silence than hear myself going through the motions.

Of course, I missed playing the guitar, but it was a peculiar sort of ache, like an amputee pining for a phantom limb. From time to time, I'd pull my guitar out of the case to see if the magic came back, but it never did. I never stopped wanting it to return, though.

So, before I left home for Denver, I decided to make one last effort to summon that spark of creative energy. I figured that if I got myself an awesome guitar, it might at least inspire me to noodle more, and if I noodled more, maybe I'd start to hear notes in my head again. After roughly 2.5 seconds' worth of consideration, I knew the guitar had to be an SG. I had some practical reasons (they're versatile enough to excel in just about any genre, they're lightweight, the neck is comfortable) and some not-so-practical (it has horns, and pointy guitars are cool). But mostly, I was hoping that the SG's raw, direct personality would pull some music out of me.

It didn't happen overnight. I decided to learn every Black Sabbath riff in chronological order starting with the eponymous track on their self-titled first record. At first, it was a workmanlike endeavor. I put my fingers where they were supposed to be, and the correct sounds came out of my amplifier at the right times.

But, as I worked my way through more tunes on that Pelham Blue SG, I began to remember the elemental joy of making music again. I could feel the guitar pulling the visceral rock and roll energy out of me like a mahogany magnet as I ran through tunes like Into the Void and Behind the Wall of Sleep. By the time I finished up Masters of Reality, I decided to bring my grand quest for ultimate Sabbathian scholarship to a premature end because I was having more fun coming up with my own heavy riffage.

After a few months of basement jamming, I realized that it was silly to keep my SG all to myself. So, I started jamming with people for the first time in years. Those jams quickly turned into band practices, and there was no looking back. I was playing constantly. Though I've since moved back to my first love, bass guitar (and everyone who ever heard me play guitar uttered a collective sigh of relief when I did so), the music has returned to my brain. When I'm not writing about guitars for Wildwood, I'm at band practice. I play in three bands, and I keep threatening to start a fourth.

Would all of this have happened if I had gotten, say, a Telecaster instead of an SG? Almost certainly, because things don't change you-you change you. I went looking for the music in my head, and that's why I found it. But, things like guitars can be useful tools on journeys through the dark parts of life. I simply chose the SG as my tool. SGs have had a sympathetic resonance with my heartstrings ever since.

Love at First Strum

How perfect would it be if the tool I'm talking about was a Wildwood Spec SG? Alas, life isn't a movie. I didn't play a Wildwood Spec SG until three years after my move when I started working at Wildwood. I distinctly remember plugging in a VOS model with a natural finish, playing a few doodles around the ninth fret with the open A string ringing, and immediately getting choked up.

That might seem like a strange response to a couple licks in A major, but (as I've spent the last thousand words telling you) SGs are special to me, and the sounds coming out of the speaker cone at that moment were such a perfect example of the tone that has inspired me for my whole musical life that my emotions overcame me for a moment. It was like stepping into one of my favorite records in real-time. For someone who loves Gibson SGs as much as I do, playing a Wildwood Spec edition is truly a magical experience.

When I did a write-up on that guitar for the website, I believe I said that it was "the platonic ideal of an SG." Since then, dozens of Wildwood Spec SGs have passed through my hands, and I am pleased to say that my initial impression is still correct. Though each guitar has had a distinctive personality, they all sounded iconic in their own way and played like butter.

The Source of the Sonic Sauce

So, why do so many inspiring sounds come out of Wildwood Spec SGs so consistently? The answer is rather simple: the wizards and warlocks at the Gibson Custom Shop find the best raw materials they can and assemble them with incredible skill, care, and precision. They start with a resonant slab of mahogany, which automatically gives the guitar a woody, warm, midrange-forward voice while also enhancing responsiveness. Then, they attach a mahogany neck to the body using hide glue.

Making instruments with hide glue is an old-world manufacturing process that requires incredible skill and patience, but it pays incredible dividends for the instrument's voice. Because it's a protein-based adhesive, it promotes the greatest possible amount of energy transfer between pieces of wood. That gives the guitar excellent resonance and sustain. After slapping on a sweet-sounding rosewood fretboard with more hide glue, the skeleton is complete.

To complete the package, our friends drop in a couple Wildwood Spec Custombuckers, which sound magnificent. Gibson based them off some of our favorite old PAFs, and they did a bang-up job of recreating that fabled vintage magic. The highs sing, the mids are punchy, and the lows are warm and woody, and overall they are quite dynamic and expressive.

The Wildwood Spec SG is a simple guitar built to perfection by some of the most skilled craftsmen in the world, and that's why they sound good enough to make a grown man get emotional in the middle of a loud, frenetic guitar store. The entire Wildwood team is proud to showcase them for all you Wildwoodians traversing the Wildwoodiverse, and I hope they bring you as much joy as they bring me.

Condition Report

This Wildwood 10 '57 Strat is in minty-fresh condition! Thanks to the Custom Shop's incredible craftsmanship and artistry, these guitars look gorgeous, sound killer, and play like butter.

Each of these Custom Shop creations features a thin fifties-style nitrocellulose finish, which allows the voice of the resonant hand-selected tonewoods to shine through.

You can drive-by roast me all you want using the names of eighties hardcore bands, and I won't care as long as I have this thing in my hands, and I Hüsker Will keep playing it loudly on my lunch breaks, because I'd say it approaches double-humbucker perfection.

Before we get into the pickups, I do have to mention its impressive acoustic resonance. It's open, loud and three-dimensional, and you can hear its personality with no electricity involved. Through an amp, the magic comes from the way the pickups complement one another. The bridge pickup is pure rock and roll brutality, with a beautiful snarl in the midrange, wonderfully open, sparkly highs, and muscular low-end that practically forces your facial muscles to contract into a stank face when you hit the low E. Through a crunchy amp, it's rhythm guitar nirvana, and it works beautifully for stinging, sizzling leads, too.

By contrast, the neck pickup is thick, warm, and righteously smooth. It's also quite harmonically dense with a rich cornucopia of sweet overtones. The attack is also quite springy, so you can really smack it and the notes won't splat out. Speaking of the attack, it's unbelievably responsive! The notes sound the instant your pick touches string--really impressive.

All of this qualities are only magnified when you amplify. Each has its own set of benefits and character and together they provide almost limitless possibilities when you consider the pairings with the available preamp Modes, their gain structures and dial-able sounds.

Compared to its 50-Watt sibling, the 100s lower Mids are fatter, fuller-sounding, and a bit more prominent in the mix, filling in all the cracks to create a balanced, wide, wall of expressive goodness, regardless of where the Mode Switch or GAIN controls are set. You feel the sound in your chest and in your bones and that helps you play with a sense of connectedness and assuredness. Everything works perfect and it sounds great. No cosmetic issues to report. Includes the original box and packing supplies.

Vintage Tone... Reimagined!

Gibson is proud to introduce the new Dual Falcon 2x10 Combo amplifier. It pays homage to Gibson's legendary past as one of the world's first manufacturers of electric guitar amplifiers. The Dual Falcon resurrects the Gibson amp icon and delivers vintage tone, reimagined in an upgraded 2 Channel rendering with valuable new features and all the original magic intact, and then some. Perfect tonal enhancements update the sound and feel, with a wider, more usable range on the sparse controls, while lush traditional spring Reverb adds dimension and broadens stylistic horizons. The original smooth-sounding Tremolo adds further vibe while selectable output power options expand the versatility with options of Full, Half, or Low power modes per channel. In addition, a buffered series Effects Loop opens up more processing options to complete the outfitting for performance applications. These updates allow the new Dual Falcon to soar even higher above the most prized vintage Gibson examples.

While inspired by the Gibson Falcon amps from the 1960s, this all-new design from renowned amp pioneer Randall Smith and the MESA/Boogie Design Team is handcrafted in Petaluma, California, and sets a new bar in low-power tone. The Dual Falcon 2x10 Combo stands apart from its predecessors due to the constructional upgrades and tonal improvements unearthed over Randall's five decades of tube amp design experience and performance-pushing ideology that deliver nothing less than astonishing results. Players of all generations and musical genres will appreciate the Dual Falcon's beyond-vintage tone, enhanced dynamics, and well-behaved low end while enjoying the added flexibility in stylistic control and the width that reverb adds to the soundscape. The three selectable power options allow fine-tuning of the clip threshold and volume level of each channel independently while the pair of 10" Jensen Blackbird 40 Alnico speakers reproduce every ounce of this mojo perfectly, creating the ultimate vintage-voiced 2x10" Combo.

The Dual Falcon features two-channel flexibility with a focus on great tone and ease of use. The ultra-simple, pure signal path design of each channel has controls consisting of Volume, Tone, and foot-switchable Reverb, plus foot-switchable Tremolo with global Speed and Depth controls, which add dimensionality and motion and immensely increase the amp's enjoyment and usefulness over a wide range of musical styles. Players in the know have long understood that one of the secrets to great overdriven tone is power amp overdrive, and lower-powered amps are key to turning up and achieving that cranked power amp sound without overwhelming volume levels. For those who demand touch sensitivity and dynamic nuance at the low to medium end of the gain spectrum and crave the classic "controlled implosion" at its farthest reaches, the cathodyne driver feeding a pair of 6L6 power tubes (or optional, smaller 6V6s with no mods) performs above and beyond expectations.

Sonically and physically, the Dual Falcon 2x10 Combo roams confidently between nest and venue, providing instant access to warm cleans and purring overdrive across the two foot-switchable channels with simple pairs of Volume and Tone controls, all at perfect power levels everyone can appreciate and enjoy. Players can select between Full, Half, or Low (15, 6, or 2-Watts) power modes of patented Multi-Watt, 6L6, Pure Class A Power, or 12, 5, or 1-Watt(s) with optional 6V6 Power Tubes, providing three levels of expressive, vintage Gibson tone and feel. This power flexibility enables even more ways to transition in and out of clip seamlessly and musically, making the Dual Falcon an ideal amp for club gigs, home practice, and recording purposes. With its modern refinements, high-end performance, and boutique construction, this bona fide bird can't wait to elevate Gibson amplifiers to the stature they've always deserved, right alongside Gibson's finest stringed instruments.

• Handcrafted in Petaluma, California

• All-Tube Amplifier: 2x 6L6 Power Tubes (optional 2x 6V6) / 4x 12AX7 Preamp Tubes

• Pure Class A Power

• Patented Multi-Watt Power, featuring Duo-Class wiring, providing power choices of FULL power (approx. 15 Watts) via 2x 6L6 Push-Pull,

Class A, Pentode; HALF power (approx. 6 Watts) via 2x 6L6 Push-Pull, Class A, Triode; or LOW power (approx. 2 Watts) via 1x 6L6 Single-Ended,

Class A, Pentode / (Approx. 12 Watts, 5 Watts, and 1 Watt (respectively) with optional 6V6 Power Tubes)

• Cathode Biased, Maintenance-Free

• Normal or Low (Cleaner) Inputs

• Two Channel Flexibility - Channel Features: Independent Volume, Tone, and Reverb Controls

• Global Tremolo with Depth & Frequency (Speed) Controls

• Spring Reverb & Tremolo are tube-driven and footswitchable

• Buffered, Series Effects Loop

• Monitor (Slave) Output - Fixed Attenuated from the Speaker Output

• Polished Stainless Steel Control Faceplate

• Aluminum Chassis

• 3 Button Footswitch Included (Channel 1/2, Reverb & Tremolo)

• Fitted Slipcover Included

• 2x 10" Jensen Blackbird 40 Alnico Speakers

• Cream Bronco Vinyl with Oxblood Grille
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0799/5824/5651/collections/image_2-1_6bae1fcb-839f-46a7-9767-22c3b8932749.png?v=1754974657
