While nothing in the tone formula needed to be tweaked (hey, no need to fix what isn't broken, right?), Fender did want to put a more refined spin on the Telecaster. Enter the Custom Telecaster, a guitar that was essentially the tried-and-true Tele design dressed up in its evening best. By adding binding to the top and back of a resonant ash or alder body, Fender imparted a little extra elegance to the Tele design for a slight upcharge.

Our Wildwood 10 1962 Custom Telecaster captures the sophisticated looks and classic tone of the sixties originals. They sport a thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish that allows for maximum resonance along with hand-wound Custom Shop electronics and a rosewood fretboard. Speaking of fretboards, the period-correct neck shapes feature a modern 10" radius and narrow-tall 6105 frets. So, you get comfortable modern ergonomics AND vintage-style tone and mojo. We invite you to browse our selection of spectacular 1962 Custom Telecasters. We're sure that you'll find one you love amongst the many colors, relic'd finishes, and neck shapes on tap. We invite you to take one for a spin and experience the magic of a Wildwood 10 1962 Custom Telecaster.

Pickup Rundown

Wildwoodians, the Hand-Wound Wildwood 10 Twisted Tele pickups in this guitar are the winners of the most fearsome shootout since the OK Corral! When we were trying to figure out what type of special sauce to put in our Wildwood 10 Tele pickups, the Twisted Tele was an easy choice for a starting point. Standard Twisted Teles have high output for fiery Tele tone, a dash of Strat-y sparkle, and excellent articulation.

That sounded like a good base to work from, so we asked our friends at the Custom Shop to send us some underwound versions with AlNiCo II magnets instead of the standard AlNiCo V, and we asked that Fender's resident pickup maestro, Josefina Campos, be the one to wind them. They sent us multiple guitars with different output levels, and the whole staff got together to put them through their paces and compare notes. After a delightful Tele-filled afternoon, we reached a rare unanimous consensus, and these pickups emerged bloodstained from the octagon as the winner.

How Do They Sound?

How did these pickups unite the notoriously opinionated Wildwood staff? Well, for starters, the lower output makes them wonderfully touch-sensitive and dynamic, allowing you to alter your tone significantly using just your hands. But, they also have plenty of power because of the nature of the Twisted Tele. They're also unbelievably articulate, so they have that iconic woody Tele twang and capture every percussive detail of your right-hand attack. The bobbin for the bridge pickup is also shorter and the neck taller, which warms up the bridge and livens up the neck. Speaking of lively, the Wildwood 10 Twisted Teles have a Strat-like sparkliness, and they're similarly vocal.

As a result, the bridge pickup is punchy and has excellent presence with plenty of jangle, chime, and sparkle. But, it still sounds quite round with no ice-pick frequencies or harshness. The neck pickup is sweet, warm, and vocal, yet it also remains open, lively, and dynamic.

Teles may be simple guitars, but the amazing thing about them is they always fit in no matter what you're doing musically. In that spirit, we believe the Hand-Wound Wildwood 10 Twisted Tele will allow you to cover just about any musical territory you want to adventure through, and its dynamic, iconic voice will inspire all sorts of musical joy.

Professional Powerhouses

They call it the American Professional II series for a simple reason: each guitar is a professional-quality American-made instrument that you can gig with night in and night out. Tom is a legend in the world of guitars, and instruments bearing his name have acquired a deservedly sterling reputation due to their outstanding tone, jaw-dropping looks, and stunning vintage accuracy. But, he wasn't always a rockstar of lutherie. In fact, he worked as a professional touring musician for many years, and during that time he became intimately acquainted with vintage guitars: how they sound, how they feel, and how they look. After deciding to stop touring, Tom got a job as a finish specialist at Gibson and eventually became a project manager in charge of the first reissues of the 1959 Les Paul standard.

For a while, Tom also gained valuable experience working as a luthier to the stars, and his client list included luminaries like Jimmy Page, Dickey Betts, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Gary Rossington.

Now, things have come full circle, and our friends at Gibson have handed Tom the keys to a brand-new institution of sonic savagery within the Gibson Custom Shop: the Murphy Lab. Tom and his team of skilled craftspeople have one mission, and one mission only: to create the most ridiculously awesome recreations of vintage Gibson guitars that the world has ever seen.

Step Into the Lab

Murphy Lab is aptly named because it is basically the musical equivalent of what happens when you give a mad scientist a laboratory fully stocked with warp drives and flux capacitors. With a plethora of resources behind them, Tom and his team have been able to create guitars that are essentially carbon copies of vintage Gibsons. They look, feel, and sound so close to the originals that it's downright scary.

Painted by Tom

Wildwood has a long and storied history of collaboration with Tom Murphy, and the Wildwood Spec by Tom Murphy series is one of the most popular runs of guitars in Wildwood history. Because Tom is an awesome guy, he is still going to hand-paint some Murphy Lab guitars for us when he can. With his master's touch, Tom puts an absolutely exquisite finish on these guitars before handing them over to the Murphy Lab team for aging. These guitars are an opportunity to experience the handiwork of a true master craftsman, and we are privileged to showcase them.

A Fantabulous Fifty-Eight

This particular Murphy Lab marvel is a reissue of a 1958 Les Paul Standard, one of the coolest and most historically-significant guitars in Gibson's history. In 1958, the Standard model received a makeover as Gibson swapped the finish from an opaque gold to a more transparent burst that highlighted the grain of the wood. The spirits of those "first bursts" are alive and well in this reissue! It has an uber-comfy chunky C-shaped neck profile and historically-correct narrow-tall frets, and that combination makes for a wonderful playing experience.

Wildwood Spec-Tacular

Because our friends at Gibson are the coolest people ever, they were kind enough to allow us to have exclusive Wildwood Spec Murphy Lab guitars. Basically, these guitars receive a little bit of extra fairy dust in the build process that makes them a bit more magical. All tops are hand-picked for exceptional beauty, and they are so beautiful that the cases should probably come with a built-in drool shield!

But, they're not just pretty faces: they're also absolute sonic titans thanks to their pickups. Each one of these guitars comes equipped with Wildwood Spec Custombuckers, and they (to use a very scientific term) totally rule. They are brimming with vintage flavor, and they capture the sound of an old PAF beautifully. The fine folks who make Gibson's pickups also added a little bit of extra secret sauce that improves their articulation, dynamism, and clarity, too. As a result, these pickups translate the subtleties and nuances of your playing so well that the guitar almost feels like an extension of your hands.

We have no doubt that these Wildwood Spec Murphy Lab guitars will bring you a lifetime of musical delight. They look gorgeous, they sound titanic, and they feel like an old friend you've never met. We hope you love them as much as we do, and we hope they inspire you to make a joyous racket for a long time.

Professional Powerhouses

They call it the American Professional II series for a simple reason: each guitar is a professional-quality American-made instrument that you can gig with night in and night out. The bridge position has a beautiful blend of bite and sparkle, and the neck position sounds warm and sweet.

The JA-90 also plays beautifully thanks to its slim modern C neck profile, medium jumbo frets, and 9.5" fingerboard radius, a configuration that promotes fast feel, easy bending, and buttery chording.

We're proud to present the JA-90 Thinline Telecaster, and we invite you to experience its sweetness!

Professional Powerhouses

They call it the American Professional II series for a simple reason: each guitar is a professional-quality American-made instrument that you can gig with night in and night out. Add in a modern radius and narrow-tall frets (a configuration that works beautifully for most styles and techniques), and one thing becomes abundantly clear: the American Pro II series delivers superior handfeel for the discerning modern player.

But, the upgrades aren't just ergonomic! Our friends at Fender have also equipped these beasts with refined V-Mod II pickups, which deliver that inimitable classic Fender tone with a dash of modern clarity. The American Pro II Stratocaster also sports a cold-rolled steel block in the trem, which improves sustain, clarity, and chime.

The guitars in the American Professional II series live up to their billing as pro-grade instruments, and we are proud to showcase them for our exceptional customers. Rock and roll, rockabilly, and country music were all taking off, and the Fender Telecaster was at the epicenter of it all. Our Wildwood 10 1955 Telecasters are an homage to the Telecasters that rolled off the line and into the hands of thousands of guitar players during the mid-1950s. They feature resonant ash bodies, period-correct neck shapes, hand-wound Custom Shop electronics, and maple necks. But they also feature our dealer-exclusive 10" radius and narrow-tall 6105 frets for comfortable modern handfeel.

So, you get the best of both worlds: all the fabulous fifties Fender tone you can handle AND modern playability. Please keep drooling to a minimum as you browse our many Wildwood 10 1955 Telecasters. We have lots of colors, neck profiles, and relic'd finishes, so we're sure you'll find something to make you salivate!

The '61 Strat Heavy Relic takes you back to a special time during the evolution of the venerable model when Leo Fender was constantly modifying, progressing, innovating and perfecting. 1961 was the final year of the round-lam or "slab" rosewood fingerboard, ushering in a new era of '60s Strats along with many other changes and upgrades. Though the Stratocaster became a runaway hit after hitmakers like Buddy Holly toted them on stage, Leo Fender's tireless commitment to excellence led him to introduce a number of improvements to the Stratocaster's design. In a quest to cater to players' demands, he introduced a soft V-shaped neck profile, and he started building some of the bodies out of alder. Our Wildwood 10 1957 Stratocasters pay homage to Leo Fender's relentless work ethic by replicating the glories of the original heavenly '57s. Here's a quick rundown of what makes them tick. They're slightly underwound, which gives them exceptional dynamic response and touch sensitivity. You can really alter your sound based on how hard you're hitting, which makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience. However, they are wound with thicker wire like Fender did in the sixties, which gives them a little more power and guts despite being underwound. As a result, their voice is similar to vintage Strat pickups we love with lots of bell-like chime and vocal response, but with a little extra warmth and muscle.

Although they are not exactly the same as a real vintage example, we think they capture the magic sound of a great vintage Strat, giving you access to the iconic sound that shaped countless classic records. They were enthused about the idea, and the Wildwood 10 was born. Thanks to the Custom Shop's incredible craftsmanship and artistry, these guitars look gorgeous, sound killer, and play like butter.

Each of these Custom Shop creations features a thin fifties-style nitrocellulose finish, which allows the voice of the resonant hand-selected tonewoods to shine through. They also have hand-wound Custom Shop pickups that are sure to inspire you to reach new heights on your sonic journey. Wildwood 10s feel great in your hands, too. Their modern 10" radius is suitable for a wide variety of styles and techniques, and their 6105 narrow-tall frets allow you to expend less energy with your left hand, especially when bending strings. To top it all off, they come with a limited edition Dealer Select Wildwood 10 hardshell case and a certificate of authenticity.

Fabulous Fifty-Fives

By 1955, things were hopping at Fender, and the Telecaster was the hottest new electric guitar in all the land.

Sah-Weet Sixty-Twos

By 1962, the Telecaster had become the go-to solidbody for working musicians.

The Marvels of the Murphy Lab

There are 7.764 billion people on this beautiful ball of water and dirt that we call home, and hardly any of them know Gibson guitars better than Tom Murphy. Its powerful, dry, clear sound formed the backbone of dozens of blues classics including "Tightrope," "Texas Flood," and even a solo or two on David Bowie's Let's Dance! Though SRV maintained that his tone was in his hands, the fine folks at Fender have managed to capture the sonic essence of his favorite guitar and put it into a stunning recreation of his vaunted main axe! So, while none of us will ever have hands like Stevie, we can at least sound like him!

The three Texas Special pickups are big part of why this guitar has so much mojo. These overwound single-coils produce have chirping midrange, sharp highs, and tight bass, and their overall tone makes you feel like you're sitting in with the band at roadhouse in El Paso!

For an SRV fan like me, though, it's not enough to have electronics that replicate his tone. A lot of his sound did come from the way he used his hands, and the shape of this neck allows you to use a lot of his signature techniques. The thick oval-shaped neck allows you to hang your thumb over to do barre chords a la Hendrix, and its shoulder is quite satisfying to grab onto when you want to do a huge bend. Speaking of bending, the Pau Ferro fretboard has a 12" radius, so you can pull the strings every which way without fear of fretting out.

Of course, this guitar wouldn't be a proper tribute to Number One if it didn't have a killer 3-tone sunburst finish, elegant gold hardware, and Stevie's initials on the pickguard. So, all you need is a cowboy hat and a feather and you can look just like Stevie, too!

Wildwood Guitars is proud to present the SRV Artist Series Stratocaster because, frankly, "Number One" is one of the coolest Strats of all time! Though playing this guitar won't turn you into a legendary bluesman, it does allow you to steal a little bit of SRV's magic. We are excited to see what tightropes you walk with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Stratocaster in hand, and we know it will provide you with endless inspiration!

The Marvels of the Murphy Lab

There are 7.764 billion people on this beautiful ball of water and dirt that we call home, and hardly any of them know Gibson guitars better than Tom Murphy. They look, feel, and sound so close to the originals that it's downright scary.

How do Tom and his team achieve such unparalleled vintage accuracy? Well, first off, Tom has discovered a brand-new formula for nitrocellulose lacquer that mimics the properties of 1950s and '60s finishes to a T. Thanks to this thinner finish, Murphy Lab guitars look like authentic vintage pieces. They don't just look the part--they are the real McCoy!

Of course, the heart of the Murphy Lab is the aging process. Part of what made Tom a legend was his ability to replicate the natural wear and tear found on distressed vintage instruments by hand-aging brand-new instruments. With his practiced eye and skilled hands, Tom artfully mimicked the finish and feel of old guitars, and he has imparted his skills to the talented team at the Murphy Lab.

Though Tom may not age each and every guitar himself, he has done a bang-up job of teaching his team the Way of Murphy, and they do a marvelous job of replicating his masterful work.

Sah-Weet Sixty-Twos

By 1962, the Telecaster had become the go-to solidbody for working musicians. By adding binding to the top and back of a resonant alder body, Fender imparted a little extra elegance to the Tele design for a slight upcharge.

The Marvels of the Murphy Lab

There are 7.764 billion people on this beautiful ball of water and dirt that we call home, and hardly any of them know Gibson guitars better than Tom Murphy.

As a result, each guitar looks like it came out of a time machine and feels like your favorite worn-in pair of blue jeans.
