Bass Marketing thinks it's '62, Bass Sales thinks it's '64, and Bass Analytics thinks it's '55. However, all parties were forced to at least reconsider after hearing this magnificent '65 P Bass with an Olympic White finish that has aged unbelievably well (all that checking, and the patina...mmmmm). Apart from looking cooler than a polar bear's toenail, it sounds jaw-dropping.

First off, it's amazing the range of sounds you can get just by altering your velocity and technique. The attack is round and springy with some delicious musical compression that really makes the percussive quality of the attack come through. When you play with a light touch, this P Bass sounds warm and piano-like. When you dig in, it snarls more, but it mostly becomes more present. The notes stay round and punchy with an open-throated quality even when you play aggressively. However, you can significantly increase the volume based on the power of your attack, and that gives this bass a huge dynamic range, which makes for a delightfully expressive playing experience.

Frequency-response wise, the low-end is monstrous, the midrange packs a wide punch, and the highs are unbelievably fat and sweet. Across the spectrum, this serial has a dry, woody tonality, but it feels cavernous and huge, too. It does the classic Precision sound as well or better than just about any thud staff that has graced Wildwood's shelves, and its iconic tone works in just about any genre or context (who needs a Swiss Army knife when you can cut through with a broadsword?).

We're proud to showcase this beastly bass, and we have no doubt its pugnacious Precision tone will inspire you to bring the thump!

Condition Report

Wildwoodians, it is our privilege to showcase this incredible 1965 Fender Precision Bass. The neck dates to November of 1965, it's an absolutely titanic low-end beast, and it looks cool as all-git-out thanks to its really cool vintage wear. It has lots of awesome checking and other battle scars that tell the story of a bass that has been a workhorse for much of its life. All parts appear to be original and function well (although the E string tuner is a little sloppy, it's not bad by any means). The frets show some moderate wear--always a sign that a vintage piece is hard to put down! By the look of it, it has undergone one repair to the finish on the bass-side lower bout, which occurred prior to when the previous owner acquired it in 1972. Overall, it's in fantastic shape, and it is sure to bring any Fender fanatic seeking low-end thunder a ton of musical joy.

Masterbuilt Magic

When a master craftsman builds an instrument by hand all by themselves from start to finish, it imbues the instrument with a special brand of magical mojo that is easy to see, hear, and feel but hard to quantify. The frets look nearly perfect, and the finish shows light signs of normal use with just a few small cosmetic imperfections: a decent-sized chip in the headstock right above the G string that has been colored in and some faint marks on the back of the headstock (almost as if someone wrote something there). It also looks like the control cover plate was sprayed with lacquer, as there are some bubbles and a piece of fuzz under it. It comes with its original hardshell case, too!

Back to Where it All Began

Back in 1952 when Gibson was putting the finishing touches on his first signature model guitar, Les Paul insisted that it come with a gold finish to emphasize its first-place quality (and because it looked stylish, of course!). Though the Les Paul Standard wore many finishes in the ensuing years, all of those original fifties Les Pauls established a gold standard of excellence. Now, Gibson USA pays tribute to those fantastic fifties Gibsons with an inspired entry in their Original Collection: the Les Paul Standard '50s model, available in nitrocellulose lacquer Goldtop, Cherry Sunburst, and Tobacco Burst finishes.

The Fifties Formula

The Les Paul Standard '50s follows the tried-and-true Les Paul formula for excellence to a T. A maple cap adorns a mahogany body to continue one of the most legendary tonewood relationships in the history of lutherie. Mahogany produces a warm, midrange-forward tone with a bit of natural compression, while maple adds in extra treble cut and enhances articulation. Together, they give these fifties-inspired beasts a robust, full voice with incredible sustain. Gibson has also outfitted the Les Paul Standard '50s model with a gloriously chunky rounded neck profile just like its vintage forebears. If you like your necks on the bigger side, it doesn't get much better than this! And, just like a fifties Les Paul, it wears a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, which allows for maximum resonance.

'Bucker Brigade

Two of Gibson's stellar Burstbucker pickups build upon the inspiring foundation laid by the tonewoods. Burstbuckers take their inspiration from the famous "Patent Applied For" (or "PAF") pickups designed by Seth Lover for Gibson in 1955. They do an excellent job of recreating the vintage magic of the originals. Specifically, the Les Paul Standard '50s features a slightly-underwound Burstbucker 1 in the neck position and a hotter Burstbucker 2 in the bridge. So, the neck position is pure vintage creaminess: broad, throaty midrange, rich low-end, and sweet, singing trebles. By contrast, the bridge position has more focused snarl, punch, and rasp in the midrange to go with taut, muscular lows and sizzling highs. In other words, these guitars nail the classic sound of the Gibson Les Paul.

A True Original

The Les Paul Standard '50s taps into the original wellspring of Gibson tone, and the results are truly inspiring. Mark Tenorio of TenorioWerx in Denver, Colorado did the restoration work, and he did an amazing job! It appears to originally been a three-tone sunburst, then refinished to blue (there are some chunks of the paint used to refinish it in the case pocket if you're curious), and now it sports a beautiful nitrocellulose lacquer Dakota Red finish, which shows some small dings and light scratches.

It has also undergone a refret at some point, and the new frets are in fantastic shape with virtually zero wear--they measure .090 inches by .048 inches. If it isn’t worthy, it isn’t used. Our laminated backs and sides are uniquely constructed with Mahogany as our middle layer, and our inner and outer layers are always matched.

Artist guitars strike the right balance between strength and vibration, crafting a voice to both inspire and give players “tools in the tone.” Alongside this approach to development lies our respect for sourcing, preparation and nurturing the wood we use to make our guitars. No matter how considered design may be, it can only be as good as the wood we use to realize them.

Our all-solid wood tops, backs and sides, as well as the mahogany used for our necks, go through a curing process developed over years to create stability, strength and tonal benefits. Depending on the wood and its use, this process takes many months or even years for some of our models.

After months-long seasoning, we perform an extra drying stage in thermo-kilns to further enhance wood stability and improve resonance. We call this process ATR—Advanced Tonal Response. ATR is a form of torrefaction—oxygen controlled, vacuum curing at special temperatures to remove more moisture and volatiles such as saps and sugars from the wood.

This does two things:

ATR makes our wood more stable when exposed to adverse dry or humid climates. While we can’t stop the effects of dryness or moisture saturation that can damage guitars, ATR goes a long way in helping our guitars become more resilient. Guitars will move or change according to the environment they are in and are more likely to move within the first two years from their production. A guitar usually becomes drier as it ages; this is one of the reasons why players often like the sound of an older guitar. ATR advances the natural, post-build drying process so the wood behaves as if it were more mature, stable, and resonant from the first day it is used.

The effects of ATR are also audible in the instrument. The biggest difference is the clarity and separation between notes and the overall response of the guitar. As the top is drier, it’s also quicker, more resonant, more open, even louder. New guitars can sometimes take time to reach this state as the wood dries over the years. ATR accelerates this effect to deliver a more sophisticated and complex voicing from day one.

Our caring approach to development comes from one unwavering goal: To deliver the best guitars in the market at every price point—instruments of a truly remarkable value that offer an unparalleled player experience.

Thank you for choosing Alvarez.

Sonic Evaluation

First things first: This Hill Guitar Company Custom Signature is one of the best-smelling guitars I've ever played, with notes of cedar that remind me of every happy memory I've ever made in a log cabin. Originally designed by master German luthier Roger Rossmeisl, the 325 was introduced in 1958, and it quickly became associated with an upstart guitar player named John who played in this weird, arty band that was named after a type of bug—the Beatles, I think they were called. But the 325 is much more than a guitar for those interested in emulating the jangly sounds that emanated from Great Britain in the sixties and seventies! Over in America, another future rock legend named John slung his 325 over his shoulder and rocked stages all over America with Creedence Clearwater Revival.

This begs the question: why did these two Johns from opposite sides of the pond who played very different music love their respective 325s so much? Well, the answer lies in the 325’s inspired combination of wood, wire, and scale length. The Rickenbacker 325C64 features a solid maple body and three vintage-style toaster-top single coils that provide classic Rick jangle in spades. Ordinarily, this combination of bright pickups and bright wood would result in quite a bright guitar, but the 21” scale length does some really interesting things that help this short-scale beauty stand out from the pack.

Short-scale guitars tend to have a warmer, fatter overall tone, and they also have a bit more “give” in their attack due to their lower string tension. So, the scale length winds up adding some low end in to go with the signature Rickenbacker chime. Also, we mustn’t discount the effects of the expressive Accent Vibrato system, which adds just a little bit of extra rock and roll raunchiness to the front end of every note. So, you get a sound that has all the crucial elements of classic Rick tone, but with a little more warmth and fullness and a little more attitude. It doesn’t matter if you like CCR, the Beatles, the Ramones, the Stones, or Springsteen: the 325 sounds pretty darn good!

The 325C64 has a completely singular feel, too. Because there’s less tension on the strings, the right-hand action is delightfully slinky, and it’s easy to make huge stretches and play chords that are normally impossible to reach without undergoing a serious flexibility-training program. Also, the rosewood fretboard atop the thin neck has a vintage-accurate 7.25” radius, which most players find tremendously advantageous for chording.

So, why did John Fogerty and John Lennon both play their 325s to death? Well, because it’s the perfect bright-sounding rock and roll rhythm guitar (and the short scale lets you do some pretty adventurous lead work, too!). Every aspect of the neck is there to make playing chords easier, and every other aspect of the construction is there to make this guitar sound full yet aggressive. The 325C64 has a sound unlike any other, and the Wildwood staff is sure it will inspire you just as much as it inspired your heroes.

Tangle with the Jangle

The Model 660 and 660/12 feature a charactered maple cutaway body based on an innovative design from the 1950s. First off, we'll talk about what's original and what's not. It has undergone a refret, and the new frets show light wear, measuring .080 inches by .035 inches. Remarkably, it appears to have never needed a neck reset (we could be wrong on this, but the glue around the end block doesn't look disturbed, and there are no tell-tale signs like drill holes on the fretboard at the body joint or disruption around the fretboard tongue). The neck angle is good, and it can be set up for fingerstyle action. The nut, tuners and bridge look original, and the saddle might be, too.

Now, on to cosmetics! There is a significant amount of lacquer damage on the side and back by the bass-side lower bout, and it seems likely that it's water damage (which does not affect the structural integrity at all. There's one open crack on the bass side, but it's insignificant and appears to have been open for awhile. Though the Stratocaster became a runaway hit after hitmakers like Buddy Holly toted them on stage, Leo Fender's tireless commitment to excellence led him to introduce a number of improvements to the Stratocaster's design. In a quest to cater to players' demands, he introduced a soft V-shaped neck profile, and he started building some of the bodies out of alder. Our Wildwood 10 1957 Stratocasters pay homage to Leo Fender's relentless work ethic by replicating the glories of the original heavenly '57s. We have a wide variety of finishes with various types of relic-ing and lots of neck profiles, so we're sure you'll be able to find a '57 that speaks to you. We invite you to browse our selection and experience the myriad delights the Wildwood 10 1957 Stratocaster has to offer.

Pickup Rundown

We believe that the Wildwood 10 Strat pickups our friends at Fender wind for us are some of the finest single-coils in the world. Here's a quick rundown of what makes them tick. They're slightly underwound, which gives them exceptional dynamic response and touch sensitivity. You can really alter your sound based on how hard you're hitting, which makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience. However, they are wound with thicker wire like Fender did in the sixties, which gives them a little more power and guts despite being underwound. As a result, their voice is similar to vintage Strat pickups we love with lots of bell-like chime and vocal response, but with a little extra warmth and muscle.

Although they are not exactly the same as a real vintage example, we think they capture the magic sound of a great vintage Strat, giving you access to the iconic sound that shaped countless classic records. While nothing in the tone formula needed to be tweaked (hey, no need to fix what isn't broken, right?), Fender did want to put a more refined spin on the Telecaster. Enter the Custom Telecaster, a guitar that was essentially the tried-and-true Tele design dressed up in its evening best. By adding binding to the top and back of a resonant ash or alder body, Fender imparted a little extra elegance to the Tele design for a slight upcharge.

Our Wildwood 10 1962 Custom Telecaster captures the sophisticated looks and classic tone of the sixties originals. They sport a thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish that allows for maximum resonance along with hand-wound Custom Shop electronics and a rosewood fretboard. Speaking of fretboards, the period-correct neck shapes feature a modern 10" radius and narrow-tall 6105 frets. So, you get comfortable modern ergonomics AND vintage-style tone and mojo. We invite you to browse our selection of spectacular 1962 Custom Telecasters. We're sure that you'll find one you love amongst the many colors, relic'd finishes, and neck shapes on tap. When we were trying to figure out what type of special sauce to put in our Wildwood 10 Tele pickups, the Twisted Tele was an easy choice for a starting point. Standard Twisted Teles have high output for fiery Tele tone, a dash of Strat-y sparkle, and excellent articulation.

That sounded like a good base to work from, so we asked our friends at the Custom Shop to send us some underwound versions with AlNiCo II magnets instead of the standard AlNiCo V, and we asked that Fender's resident pickup maestro, Josefina Campos, be the one to wind them. They sent us multiple guitars with different output levels, and the whole staff got together to put them through their paces and compare notes. After a delightful Tele-filled afternoon, we reached a rare unanimous consensus, and these pickups emerged bloodstained from the octagon as the winner.

How Do They Sound?

How did these pickups unite the notoriously opinionated Wildwood staff? Well, for starters, the lower output makes them wonderfully touch-sensitive and dynamic, allowing you to alter your tone significantly using just your hands. But, they also have plenty of power because of the nature of the Twisted Tele. They're also unbelievably articulate, so they have that iconic woody Tele twang and capture every percussive detail of your right-hand attack. The bobbin for the bridge pickup is also shorter and the neck taller, which warms up the bridge and livens up the neck. Speaking of lively, the Wildwood 10 Twisted Teles have a Strat-like sparkliness, and they're similarly vocal.

As a result, the bridge pickup is punchy and has excellent presence with plenty of jangle, chime, and sparkle.
