Tom is a legend in the world of guitars, and instruments bearing his name have acquired a deservedly sterling reputation due to their outstanding tone, jaw-dropping looks, and stunning vintage accuracy. But, he wasn't always a rockstar of lutherie. In fact, he worked as a professional touring musician for many years, and during that time he became intimately acquainted with vintage guitars: how they sound, how they feel, and how they look. After deciding to stop touring, Tom got a job as a finish specialist at Gibson and eventually became a project manager in charge of the first reissues of the 1959 Les Paul standard. For a while, Tom also gained valuable experience working as a luthier to the stars, and his client list included luminaries like Jimmy Page, Dickey Betts, Joe Perry, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, and Gary Rossington. Now, things have come full circle, and our friends at Gibson have handed Tom the keys to a brand-new institution of sonic savagery within the Gibson Custom Shop: the Murphy Lab. It responds to your attack with a lovely sweet squish that highlights your right-hand technique with exceptional articulation before giving way to that classic bell-like note bloom vintage Strats are beloved for. The bridge pickup is quite snappy with a focused bit in the midrange and twangy lows, and it makes me want to play funk rhythms, aggressive chords, jangly chords, and twangy, snarl leads. The middle position has a broader midrange response and fatter lows for a more muscular, warmer tone. Finally, the neck pickup does that chewy, vocal Hendrixian thing while also being clear enough to use for rhythm parts that need to get down with the thickness. All in all, it's a spectacular example of a vintage Strat, and it will make some lucky Fender fanatic one happy guitar picker!

Condition Report

This '74 Strat is also quite clean, but it does appear to be assembled out of components from different years. The body and neck plate are from '74, but the neck appears to be from a '76, and the pickguard, pots, and pickups look like they're from '77. To accomodate the '77 pickguard, a previous owner enlarged the screw-holes with a tool or drill, and some of the holes can't hold screws. Regardless of what year it is, it's an amazing guitar! It shows less wear than you'd expect from a guitar of this vintage, although there are a couple of noticeable areas of finish disruption on the top and back. The frets look original and have been re-crowned to measure about .085 inches by .038 inches. That's right-our friends at Gibson are building souped-up USA Les Pauls with jaw-dropping, outlandishly beautiful tops from the Custom Shop wood vault! If you let out a Ric Flair-esque "WOOOOOOOOO" upon learning that information, you're not alone, as there was much yelling, screaming, and open joyous weeping around the shop when we learned Gibson was building these bad boys. You see, a Custom Shop top on a USA instrument is simply unprecedented, and we love firsts here at Wildwood.

We also love pickups with serious vintage PAF vibes, sweet finishes, uber-comfy necks, and (of course) gorgeous wood. Naturally, we're as hyped about these guitars as Pete Townshend is about performing windmills during "Won't Get Fooled Again," so let's dive deeper and see what makes the Original Collection Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top so special!

Custom Shop Magic

Of course, the magic of these guitars starts with the top. Though beauty is self-explanatory (take a look to the left of this text and all will be revealed!), let's try to explain it anyway. The tops the Gibson Custom Shop uses may be from the same species of maple as their counterparts, but they're a different breed nonetheless. Though they do meet a sky-high standard for quality figuring, what really sets them apart is their uniqueness. They're like snowflakes, no two exactly the same, each pattern of flame in the grain a sentence in a different musical story. Each one has its own personality and style, so you can find a Les Paul Custom Shop Top that reflects who you are as a player and person, and that is the true magic of Custom Shop maple!

Pugnacious PAF-Style Pickups

Though the Original Collection Les Paul Custom Shop Top is a guitar of uncommon beauty, there's nothing worse than a pretty face with nothing to say. Thankfully, they come equipped with pickups that help them speak quite eloquently and powerfully: two Wildwood Spec '59 Tribute Humbuckers.

These pickups capture the mojo and tone of vintage Gibsons beautifully. They have enough power, brawn and gristle to storm the gates of Valhalla, but they also display outstanding touch-sensitivity and a tremendous capacity for subtlety and nuance. Played clean, they create a beautiful world of warmth and sparkle that's easy to get lost in. Played dirty, they make you feel like you're crushing a 1992 Honda Civic in a monster truck!

The bridge pickup is a delight: punchy with plenty of snarl in the midrange, tight, muscle-bound low-end and sizzling-sweet highs. In the neck position, you'll find deep, warm, woody lows along with broad, vocal midrange and singing highs. These are the kinds of sounds that make you remember why you fell in love with Gibsons in the first place, and their capacity for musical inspiration is boundless.

Sizzling Sixties Style

This particular Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top is a '60s-inspired model, which means it comes with some pretty nifty appointments. It has a slim sixties-style neck profile that feels as fast as Crisco-coated lightning, and it's a joy to play. It also has Grover tuners and reflector knobs to match the decade's aesthetic.

Top-to-Bottom Excellence

We're proud and excited to share the Original Collection Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top with all of you wonderful Wildwoodians. Ever the innovator, Leo Fender decided to tweak the already-legendary Tele tone formula by introducing a rosewood fretboard. This new tonewood's sweet, round-sounding attack provided a delightful new color for discerning players' palettes, and they took the musical world by storm. These Wildwood 10 1959 Telecasters capture the trailblazing magic of those original '59s by pairing resonant tonewoods with Custom Shop electronics and period-correct neck shapes. But, they also have modern 10" radii and narrow-tall 6105 frets, so they feel as good in your hands as any modern instrument. We have plenty of colors and finishes with varying levels of relic-ing, and several different neck profiles to choose from, so we invite you to take a gander at our selection of Wildwood 10 1959 Telecasters. We're sure you'll find a divine '59 that inspires you to reach new heights on your fretboard journey!

Pickup Rundown

Wildwoodians, the Hand-Wound Wildwood 10 Twisted Tele pickups in this guitar are the winners of the most fearsome shootout since the OK Corral! When we were trying to figure out what type of special sauce to put in our Wildwood 10 Tele pickups, the Twisted Tele was an easy choice for a starting point. Standard Twisted Teles have high output for fiery Tele tone, a dash of Strat-y sparkle, and excellent articulation. That sounded like a good base to work from, so we asked our friends at the Custom Shop to send us some underwound versions with AlNiCo II magnets instead of the standard AlNiCo V, and we asked that Fender's resident pickup maestro, Josefina Campos, be the one to wind them. They sent us multiple guitars with different output levels, and the whole staff got together to put them through their paces and compare notes. After a delightful Tele-filled afternoon, we reached a rare unanimous consensus, and these pickups emerged bloodstained from the octagon as the winner.

How Do They Sound?

How did these pickups unite the notoriously opinionated Wildwood staff? Well, for starters, the lower output makes them wonderfully touch-sensitive and dynamic, allowing you to alter your tone significantly using just your hands. But, they also have plenty of power because of the nature of the Twisted Tele. They're also unbelievably articulate, so they have that iconic woody Tele twang and capture every percussive detail of your right-hand attack. The bobbin for the bridge pickup is also shorter and the neck taller, which warms up the bridge and livens up the neck. Speaking of lively, the Wildwood 10 Twisted Teles have a Strat-like sparkliness, and they're similarly vocal. As a result, the bridge pickup is punchy and has excellent presence with plenty of jangle, chime, and sparkle. But, it still sounds quite round with no ice-pick frequencies or harshness. The neck pickup is sweet, warm, and vocal, yet it also remains open, lively, and dynamic. Teles may be simple guitars, but the amazing thing about them is they always fit in no matter what you're doing musically. In that spirit, we believe the Hand-Wound Wildwood 10 Twisted Tele will allow you to cover just about any musical territory you want to adventure through, and its dynamic, iconic voice will inspire all sorts of musical joy.

The Perfect 10

Years ago, we approached our friends at the Fender Custom Shop with a proposal: would they build us guitars that combined the mojo of a true-to-vintage reissue with modern handfeel and comfy modern ergonomics? We're sure you'll find one that tickles your eardrums!

Jazzmaster Tone Explained, Once and For All

Let's address the elephant in the room: what exactly makes a Jazzmaster sound like a Jazzmaster? More importantly, why does the Wildwood 10 Jazzmaster provide such a sterling example of Jazzmaster tone? Well, it has to do with the inimitable alchemy between the floating vibrato and the oft-imitated, never-duplicated sound of the Jazzmaster's flagpole magnet pickups. Though they are often mistaken for P-90s or humbuckers, Jazzmaster pickups are a unique design. They have flat, wide poles with lots of surface area, which gives them a fatter bass response and a more robust midrange while maintaining the clarity and sparkle that Fender single-coils are known for--which makes sense, given that they were originally designed to be used for jazz!

This thick frequency response interacts in an inspiring way with the sonic idiosyncrasies caused by the bridge's design. The Jazzmaster bridge was originally built to give players maximum percussiveness, clarity, and articulation on the front end of their notes. It accomplished this in spades, but the geometry of the bridge also caused the guitar to lose a little bit of body at the beginning of the note. So, Jazzmasters have a clear, focused, bright initial tone that thickens up and becomes lush and full almost immediately as the note sustains and blooms.

A Versatile Voice

Our friends at Fender equipped these Wildwood 10s with RSD bridges and Custom Shop flagpole magnet pickups to ensure they have this same combination of articulation and full harmonic response as a vintage example. This allows them to excel at everything from jangly dream pop to blissful fuzzed-out rock to reverb-laden surf to twangy country to screaming blues to warm jazz. Like the best vintage examples, they sing with a completely singular voice, yet they seldom sound out of place--a testament to the strength of the Jazzmaster's personality. How ironic: a guitar that was often cast as the black sheep of the Fender family finally managed to become a staple in American music precisely because it is so unique!

The fine craftspeople of the Fender Custom Shop have imbued these guitars with the same iconic sounds as the Jazzmasters of yore, and we know they will inspire you to create and innovate in ways you never thought possible. They were enthused about the idea, and the Wildwood 10 was born. Thanks to the Custom Shop's incredible craftsmanship and artistry, these guitars look gorgeous, sound killer, and play like butter. The sixties were also an exciting time for Stratocaster design, as Leo and company outfitted them with rosewood fretboards for the first time. The rosewood produced a sweet attack that spoke to everyone from Hendrix to SRV! Our Wildwood 10 1961 Stratocasters pay tribute to the great Strat boom of the sixties, and we think they embody the sweet sounds of that era to a T. We have a wide variety of colors, relic'd finishes, and neck profiles on tap, so we invite you to browse away and find a Strat that plucks your heartstrings. Here's a quick rundown of what makes them tick. They're slightly underwound, which gives them exceptional dynamic response and touch sensitivity. You can really alter your sound based on how hard you're hitting, which makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience. However, they are wound with thicker wire like Fender did in the sixties, which gives them a little more power and guts despite being underwound. As a result, their voice is similar to vintage Strat pickups we love with lots of bell-like chime and vocal response, but with a little extra warmth and muscle. Although they are not exactly the same as a real vintage example, we think they capture the magic sound of a great vintage Strat, giving you access to the iconic sound that shaped countless classic records. Like many guitar nerds, I had no choice but to give my life to rock and roll after I heard the proverbial One Guitar; in my case, it was Angus Young's SG. Once my dad played me Back in Black when I was six, it was all over. It probably had something to do with the riffs (AC/DC does know a thing or two about songwriting), but the SG's tone and appearance have always spoken to me on an elemental level.

Though it has plenty of muscle, it sounds less like a bodybuilder and more like a scary dude in a leather jacket picking his teeth with a switchblade. And, it has a sensitive side. Though there's an exciting rawness and attitude to the SG's sound, it never loses its inherent woody warmth. It may be raw, but it has plenty of range. So, in Tommy Iommi's hands, the SG snarls like a hellhound. In Derek Trucks's hands, the SG cries like a female blues singer from the Delta circa 1927. What's the common thread? Both players aim to bottle raw, intense emotion with their playing, and the SG is the perfect instrument for the job.

Because the SG wears its heart on its horns, it's a guitar that I love deeply, and the Wildwood Spec version is my personal favorite example of the model. We'll get to tech specs later, but I want to help you understand the deeper reasons why Wildwood Spec SGs are such wonderful instruments, the ones that go beyond fret size and pickup output. The SG is so deeply intertwined with my life and my musical journey that I need to tell part of my own story to properly tell the story of the Wildwood Spec SG. If you just want to hear about the nuts and bolts of these mahogany-bodied monsters, feel free to skip ahead to the second-to-last header. But, it's a compelling story-I promise.

My Solid Guitar Story

The SG seems to pull raw, unadulterated, pure music out of people, and that's why I bought one before I moved to Colorado four years ago. At that point, I had mostly given up on music after joint problems made playing nearly impossible. Though my body had recovered, the creative spark was gone. I still loved listening to music, but I didn't really feel any desire to play. I had read a biography of jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and one of his favorite pieces of advice for aspiring musicians stuck with me: if you don't hear music in your head, don't pick up your instrument. That seemed reasonable to me, and since I didn't hear anything, I stopped playing. Better to sit in silence than hear myself going through the motions.

Of course, I missed playing the guitar, but it was a peculiar sort of ache, like an amputee pining for a phantom limb. From time to time, I'd pull my guitar out of the case to see if the magic came back, but it never did. I never stopped wanting it to return, though.

So, before I left home for Denver, I decided to make one last effort to summon that spark of creative energy. I figured that if I got myself an awesome guitar, it might at least inspire me to noodle more, and if I noodled more, maybe I'd start to hear notes in my head again. After roughly 2.5 seconds' worth of consideration, I knew the guitar had to be an SG. I had some practical reasons (they're versatile enough to excel in just about any genre, they're lightweight, the neck is comfortable) and some not-so-practical (it has horns, and pointy guitars are cool). But mostly, I was hoping that the SG's raw, direct personality would pull some music out of me.

It didn't happen overnight. I decided to learn every Black Sabbath riff in chronological order starting with the eponymous track on their self-titled first record. At first, it was a workmanlike endeavor. I put my fingers where they were supposed to be, and the correct sounds came out of my amplifier at the right times.

But, as I worked my way through more tunes on that Pelham Blue SG, I began to remember the elemental joy of making music again. I could feel the guitar pulling the visceral rock and roll energy out of me like a mahogany magnet as I ran through tunes like Into the Void and Behind the Wall of Sleep. By the time I finished up Masters of Reality, I decided to bring my grand quest for ultimate Sabbathian scholarship to a premature end because I was having more fun coming up with my own heavy riffage.

After a few months of basement jamming, I realized that it was silly to keep my SG all to myself. So, I started jamming with people for the first time in years. Those jams quickly turned into band practices, and there was no looking back. I was playing constantly. Though I've since moved back to my first love, bass guitar (and everyone who ever heard me play guitar uttered a collective sigh of relief when I did so), the music has returned to my brain. When I'm not writing about guitars for Wildwood, I'm at band practice. I play in three bands, and I keep threatening to start a fourth.

Would all of this have happened if I had gotten, say, a Telecaster instead of an SG? Almost certainly, because things don't change you-you change you. I went looking for the music in my head, and that's why I found it. But, things like guitars can be useful tools on journeys through the dark parts of life. I simply chose the SG as my tool. SGs have had a sympathetic resonance with my heartstrings ever since.

Love at First Strum

How perfect would it be if the tool I'm talking about was a Wildwood Spec SG? Alas, life isn't a movie. I didn't play a Wildwood Spec SG until three years after my move when I started working at Wildwood. I distinctly remember plugging in a VOS model with a natural finish, playing a few doodles around the ninth fret with the open A string ringing, and immediately getting choked up.

That might seem like a strange response to a couple licks in A major, but (as I've spent the last thousand words telling you) SGs are special to me, and the sounds coming out of the speaker cone at that moment were such a perfect example of the tone that has inspired me for my whole musical life that my emotions overcame me for a moment. It was like stepping into one of my favorite records in real-time. For someone who loves Gibson SGs as much as I do, playing a Wildwood Spec edition is truly a magical experience.

When I did a write-up on that guitar for the website, I believe I said that it was "the platonic ideal of an SG." Since then, dozens of Wildwood Spec SGs have passed through my hands, and I am pleased to say that my initial impression is still correct. Though each guitar has had a distinctive personality, they all sounded iconic in their own way and played like butter.

The Source of the Sonic Sauce

So, why do so many inspiring sounds come out of Wildwood Spec SGs so consistently? The answer is rather simple: the wizards and warlocks at the Gibson Custom Shop find the best raw materials they can and assemble them with incredible skill, care, and precision. They start with a resonant slab of mahogany, which automatically gives the guitar a woody, warm, midrange-forward voice while also enhancing responsiveness. Then, they attach a mahogany neck to the body using hide glue.

Making instruments with hide glue is an old-world manufacturing process that requires incredible skill and patience, but it pays incredible dividends for the instrument's voice. Because it's a protein-based adhesive, it promotes the greatest possible amount of energy transfer between pieces of wood. That gives the guitar excellent resonance and sustain. After slapping on a sweet-sounding rosewood fretboard with more hide glue, the skeleton is complete.

To complete the package, our friends drop in a couple Wildwood Spec Custombuckers, which sound magnificent. Gibson based them off some of our favorite old PAFs, and they did a bang-up job of recreating that fabled vintage magic. The highs sing, the mids are punchy, and the lows are warm and woody, and overall they are quite dynamic and expressive.

The Wildwood Spec SG is a simple guitar built to perfection by some of the most skilled craftsmen in the world, and that's why they sound good enough to make a grown man get emotional in the middle of a loud, frenetic guitar store. But we also have equally deep, abiding affection for elegant, simple instruments that don't need abalone inlays to get the job done with aplomb. That's why we're so proud to present the Martin 000-15M, one of the most timeless Martin guitars ever to grace our shelves.

Based on the World War II-era 15 series models that debuted in late 1939, the 000-15M brings vintage-inspired Martin tone into the modern era with immense grace and style. Martin's all-mahogany instruments from this era were favored by working-class players because of their superior playability and craftsmanship, affordable price point, and warm, rich tone--quite a historical precedent! Nevertheless, the modern 000-15M lives up to its vintage pedigree. It still delivers the sort of tone that will leave you glued to your favorite pickin' chair or couch for hours and hours at an unbelievable value. Let's take a deeper dive and see what makes the 000-15M so alluring.

Solid Wood Magic

The biggest part of the 000-15M's appeal lies in its all-solid mahogany body. There is simply nothing like a Martin acoustic guitar made of high-quality solid wood. Solid wood resonates and breathes almost as if it is alive in your hands, giving you a tactile, physical connection to the instrument. You can feel the guitar vibrate in your ribs, your gut, and your heart, and it makes for a divinely inspiring, out-of-this-world playing experience. You'll have to forgive me for getting a little ecstatic and poetic here, but it really is special that such an affordable instrument provides such deeply satisfying sonic delights!

High on the 'Hog

Speaking of delightful things, let's talk mahogany. Mahogany is most often seen singing backup to a spruce top in the world of acoustic guitars, but here it makes the most of its time in the spotlight. This classic tonewood is known for its fast response time, warmth, roundness, depth, and dryness, and the 000-15M exhibits all of these characteristics in spades. In fact, it's quite easy to get lost in the rapture of the deep when playing with one of these guitars! Mahogany's welcoming warm chocolate-y bass response, rich woody midrange, and transparent, round trebles create a sonic atmosphere that invites your fingers to wander the fretboard for days.

Furthermore, each note practically jumps out of the soundhole the instant your finger or pick touches the string, making for a wonderfully expressive playing experience. The midrange is also quite responsive, and playing hard gives you that classic Martin punch on single-notes. Also, you can get a surprising amount of sparkle when you play big cowboy chords with vigor.

Avoiding the Mud

Mahogany's reputation for warmth and woodiness can cause some guitar players trepidation at the looming threat of muddiness. However, clarity-conscious players need not worry, because the 000-15M sidesteps the dreaded muck. Mahogany's inherent harmonic dryness keeps the sound quite focused. The 000-15M has a sculpted frequency response profile that emphasizes the fundamentals with great force. So, each note on each string of your favorite fancy jazz chord sings out clearly.

Martin also made an inspired decision to use simple non-scalloped X-bracing for these guitars. Non-scalloped bracing is more rigid, which enhances the guitar's headroom. This, coupled with mahogany's aforementioned roundness, also helps keep every note tight and well-defined. As a result, the 000-15M has superb string-to-string balance. All in all, it has a voice that blends warmth and clarity in an irresistible way.

A Wooden Swiss Army Knife

A literal wooden Swiss Army Knife would be the worst invention ever, but it is an apt metaphor for the multi-faceted nature of the 000-15M. This is an acoustic guitar that can do it all! Flatpickers and fingerpickers alike will love it for its responsiveness and its roundness. Its midrange-forward voice makes it a solid building block for other instruments when used for rhythm parts. But, it can also cut through a mix when you need to take a lead. Its warmth will inspire jazzy excursions, yet its earthiness will also provoke gutsy blues playing. And, its rich voice is sure to inspire countless expressive solos. Perhaps most importantly, its focused frequency response complements the human voice beautifully. Oh, and sound engineers love it, because it records like a dream.

We are proud to showcase such an exceptional instrument. We believe that the Martin 000-15M provides legendary tone at a player-friendly price. For that, we love it with the intensity of a thousand suns. They were enthused about the idea, and the Wildwood 10 was born. Thanks to the Custom Shop's incredible craftsmanship and artistry, these guitars look gorgeous, sound killer, and play like butter.

Each of these Custom Shop creations features a thin fifties-style nitrocellulose finish, which allows the voice of the resonant hand-selected tonewoods to shine through. While nothing in the tone formula needed to be tweaked (hey, no need to fix what isn't broken, right?), Fender did want to put a more refined spin on the Telecaster. Enter the Custom Telecaster, a guitar that was essentially the tried-and-true Tele design dressed up in its evening best. By adding binding to the top and back of a resonant ash or alder body, Fender imparted a little extra elegance to the Tele design for a slight upcharge.

Our Wildwood 10 1962 Custom Telecaster captures the sophisticated looks and classic tone of the sixties originals. They sport a thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish that allows for maximum resonance along with hand-wound Custom Shop electronics and a rosewood fretboard. Speaking of fretboards, the period-correct neck shapes feature a modern 10" radius and narrow-tall 6105 frets. So, you get comfortable modern ergonomics AND vintage-style tone and mojo. We invite you to browse our selection of spectacular 1962 Custom Telecasters. We're sure that you'll find one you love amongst the many colors, relic'd finishes, and neck shapes on tap. We invite you to take one for a spin and experience the magic of a Wildwood 10 1962 Custom Telecaster.

Epiphone has once again joined forces with Gibson Custom to introduce the Inspired by Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird I Reissue - a faithful recreation of the groundbreaking design by renowned automotive stylist Ray Dietrich. Punk rockers, blues devotees, reggae rhythm specialists, and classic rock riffsmiths alike have all fallen in love with its versatile voice and simple, elegant design. Now, Wildwood is proud to present the Original Collection Les Paul Junior, a guitar that continues the Special's legacy with great verve and gusto. Let's take a deeper dive and examine the sonic characteristics that have helped the Les Paul Special inspire everyone from Bob Marley to Carlos Santana to Keith Richards.

The Special Sauce

So, what is the source of the Original Collection Les Paul Special's incredible power? How does a humble former student model have so much muscle? Well, Wildwoodians, the answer has three key components: wood, wire, and hardware.

The Les Paul Special's body is made out of high-quality, resonant mahogany. As a general rule, mahogany has a warm, punchy, midrange-forward sound with a natural tendency towards round, musical compression. All in all, mahogany-bodied electric guitars sound warm, clear, and well-mannered when played acoustically.

By contrast, P-90 pickups have a brash, bold personality. Their midrange snarls, bites, and punches, their highs are full of rich bell-like overtones, and their lows are meaty and muscular. The mahogany body rounds off the harsh edges of the P-90 sound ever so slightly, which allows the Special to sound aggressive yet pleasant no matter how much gain you pile on. And, through a clean amp, it sounds lush and full without any ugly spiky frequencies.

Two Pickups with Tons of Tones

The bridge pickup in the Les Paul Special is killer for cutting lead lines, and it is fearsome as a rock rhythm machine. Through a clean amp, it has plenty of jangle, chime, and warmth. Crank it up into overdrive, and it will carry you all the way to Valhalla with its perfect combination of punch and sparkle (Thor probably won't let you in, though, because he will be intimidated by your sick-sounding guitar).

The neck pickup can still have a mean disposition, but it's a bit smoother and more erudite. The midrange is broader and throatier and the low-end is deeper, but the highs still have plenty of sizzle. Single-note lines have lots of weight and girth, and chords sound thick and rich. Through a clean amp, the neck pickup gives you a one-way ticket to Jazz City, and it is lovely for all things mellow and warm. If you turn up the gain, you can cop everything from Sabbathian heaviness to wailing blues tones.

Can We Take it To the Bridge?

Part of the reason why the pickups in these Specials sounds so good is the design of the bridge itself. The Original Collection Les Paul Special features a wraparound tailpiece, a piece of hardware that is utterly genius in its simplicity. Wraparound tailpieces improve sustain and resonance because they are beefy and because there is more contact between string and bridge. Of course, this does make it a little harder to intonate. But, most players are perfectly happy to trade a little bit of precision for bigger sound. And anyway, you can always bend it 'til it sounds good!

Express Yourself

Though the Les Paul Special is the perfect tool for engaging in rock and roll gnarliness, it has a sophisticated side, and it is remarkably versatile. It excels at punk, jazz, rock, blues, metal, country, and everything in between, and it gives you a wide sonic palette so you can express yourself to your fullest capability. Best of all, it provides all of this in a stripped-down, frills-free package at an incredible value. Martin Guitar Company's history, and we are delighted that Martin brought it back as a part of their standard line in 2016. Though it may have less visibility than its dreadnought brother, the D-18, it is every bit as iconic in terms of historical significance and sound quality. Because the 00-18 was so comfortable to play and sounded so clear, punchy, and articulate, it was a perpetual favorite among the Greenwich Village coffee shop crowd that touched off the folk explosion of the '50s and '60s. If you fingerpick your way through G, C, and D once on one of these modern 00-18s, it immediately becomes apparent that they share a bloodline with their legendary historical forebears.

Talkin' Woody and Bob Blues

There are lots of famous names on the list of 00-18 players, but none more important than Woody Guthrie. According to longtime Martin Employee Dick Boak in an interview you can read here, Woody Guthrie would order a new guitar--often a 00-18--every couple months. This wasn't because he was out smashing guitars on the road but because he often gave his guitars away to young aspiring artists. It's natural that Woody gravitated towards the 00-18: it's simple, unpretentious, relentlessly playable, and it provides a perfect blend of articulation, clarity, and power. Given Woody's rather lax attitude about personal property, it's also easy to see why he gave so many away. Who wouldn't want to share a guitar with such a glorious voice? Speaking of glorious voices, Bob Dylan was also a big fan of the 00-18--likely because he saw his idol, Guthrie, using one. The stellar sound of small-bodied Martins made of spruce and Mahogany is all over his early records.

A Delightful Acoustic Companion

Within five minutes of picking up a 00-18, it's easy to see why Dylan, Guthrie, and so many important players loved it. First off, it's hard to beat from an ergonomic standpoint. The 24.9" scale puts the frets closer together and reduces string tension, making for a wonderfully slinky handfeel and an effortless playing experience. Nowadays, it comes equipped with a modified low oval neck profile with a high-performance taper that beckons you to play for hours and hours. Furthermore, the 00 body size is just right: small enough to be comfortable for couch and porch picking sessions, but big enough to speak with authority. And what a sweet voice the 00-18 has! It's even, balanced, warm, and clear, and it's exceptionally versatile. The classic hulking Martin midrange is here in spades, and it is quite broad and woody sounding. However, when you dig in, the mids become more focused and punchy, perfect for gutbucket Delta blues. The bass response is tight but present, and the low E string is still quite satisfying. On the other end of the spectrum, the highs are open and clear, with a pleasing silvery sparkle of overtones, and a pleasant round quality.

A Guitar We Can All Agree On

Fingerpickers and flatpickers alike will enjoy this sort of frequency response. For pickstyle players, the 00-18 provides plenty of midrange punch to cut through a mix while also having the nuance necessary to make intricate, intimate passages come through. As a strummer, it provides all the resonance you need without any of the flub you don't, so it sits nicely in a mix without crowding the other instruments. Fingersylists will also love the 00-18's blend of articulation, warmth, and clarity. The front end of each note is detailed enough that you can hear the difference between using the side of your thumb and the pad on low notes. After the initial attack, each note rings out with piano-like immediacy with plenty of weight and mass. Nevertheless, it still maintains excellent note separation even on fancy jazz chords with strange dissonances. So, fast, intricate fingerstyle passages come through in high definition, while slow, lyrical compositions still have an inviting warmth and depth. Recording engineers also love the 00-18. Steve Howe of the band Yes used the 00-18 as his primary acoustic for recording, and it's easy to see why! Again, it provides all the midrange muscle necessary for a great recorded acoustic sound, and none of the unnecessary flub. Getting a great sound in the studio is easy when the guitar already sounds like it's been produced in the room!

Double-Oughta Love It!

We are proud to present our exceptional customers with a Martin that continues the brand's grand tradition of excellence with such aplomb. Due to the harsh realities of the economy after the Great Depression, there was limited demand for the top-of-the-line SJ-200, and consequently, relatively few were produced. The rare rosewood-bodied pre-war SJ-200 models have become highly prized by today's collectors, which has driven their used prices up significantly on the vintage guitar market. It is the most popular acoustic guitar model ever made by the company. Renowned for its no-nonsense practicality and wide acceptance and use across genres, it quickly earned the nickname, “The Workhorse.” Now, Epiphone is proud to introduce the J-45 Standard EC. This new model, which is part of the Inspired by Gibson Collection, features all of the tone and utility of the J-45 Standard, but also incorporates the advantages of a cutaway body for even more expressiveness and upper-fret accessibility.

The J-45 Standard EC features a round shoulder cutaway body with a back and sides made from solid mahogany. The mahogany body is paired with a solid spruce top for the classic tonewood recipe that is at the heart of the J-45 design. Since it is made from solid tonewoods, the sound of this guitar will only improve as it ages. The one-piece mahogany neck is glued to the body and attaches with a tapered dovetail joint. The neck has a comfortable Rounded C profile and is topped with a rosewood fretboard with 20 standard frets and mother-of-pearl dot inlays. The headstock features the popular 60s Kalamazoo shape, and is equipped with precise and smooth-turning Grover Rotomatic tuners and a bone nut, and is adorned with the Epiphone logo inlaid in mother-of-pearl. The Epiphone J-45 Standard EC also comes with a Fishman S-Core under-saddle piezo pickup and PreSys II preamp preinstalled, so it’s ready for live performances as well as studio recording. The preamp features side-mounted controls for volume, bass, treble, and a phase switch, while a combination battery box and endpin output jack make battery replacement easy. It even has an electronic tuner built in so you can quickly and easily check your tuning, even in the middle of a gig. No, I'm excited because I get a chance to tell the story of me getting my Forever Acoustic, a Yairi Masterworks OM! Last spring when Wildwood first became a Yairi dealer, I pulled a lovely all-mahogany Yairi FYM66HD out of its case to write an evaluation for our website and prep it for posting. I knew of the Yairi name because many luthier friends of mine had strongly recommended that I buy one, and I knew the basic story of the company (Kazuo Yairi was a legendary luthier who partnered to with Alvarez in the sixties to make guitars by hand using old-world techniques in his shop in Japan), but I'd never had the opportunity to play one before. I was immediately struck by its beauty, and I was a little in awe as I tuned it up. When I tuned the high e string, all the other strings started ringing faintly with a beautiful tone, and I said, out loud, "Oh, this is my guitar now."

Suffice to say, I never wrote that evaluation, because that guitar went home with me that night. I've played it just about every day since, and it's only two hours and three minutes until I can head home to play it tonight (but who's counting?). That alone speaks to the greatness of Yairi, but the significance of how quickly it captured my heart is deeper in context.

You see, I've been writing all the text for the Wildwood website for eight years, and over that time I've played and written about thousands of acoustic guitars. During that whole time, I was searching for The One, and I never found it until that joyous day last spring. I'm NOTORIOUSLY picky about acoustic guitars, and I demand unreasonable levels of greatness from them. In other words, I have expensive taste! So, I fell in love with plenty of acoustics at Wildwood over the better part of the last decade, but none of the handful that stole my heart were attainable.

That all changed the minute I tuned up that Yairi. After I played it for a minute or two, I quickly realized it was my favorite acoustic guitar I'd ever played at any price point. That right there is the magic of an Alvarez Yairi guitar. It has all the magic and superior craftsmanship of a guitar lovingly hand-built by a masterful hand, but at an insane value. They are the guitar equivalent of champagne on a beer budget, and they have a tremendous capacity to inspire creativity. I have no doubt you'll write a similar story to mine if you take one for a spin, and cherish yours the way I'm planning to cherish mine in about...an hour and thirty-eight minutes, now!

Sonic Evaluation

"Joyful Jazz Odyssey" is how I would describe the experience of playing this beautiful Benedetto Bravo! There's some special and wonderful that happens when you sit down with a guitar that replicates everything you do faithfully with crystalline purity without losing the woody warmth you'd want out of an archtop. This Bravo is one of those rare and special guitars. From the moment I sat down with it, I was inspired, and I found all sorts of interesting new pathways across the fretboard. That lead to a lot of "whoah, did I play that?" moments where I played stuff I'd never thought of before. Yet, it never loses its inherent sweetness, and it has just the right amount of crystalline chime.

I'm in love with this guitar, and I play on embarking on many more joyful jazz odyssies on my lunch break until it finds its forever home.

Condition Report

This '07 Benedetto Bravo is in fantastic shape! It shows very light signs of normal use (mostly just some faint scratches), and there is a little bit of tarnishing on the hardware. The frets also have very light wear. It comes with its original hardshell case, too.
