It marries the timeless aspects of Les Paul design with modern ergonomics and versatile electronics to provide discerning players with everything they need to set the stage, studio, or practice room on fire.

The magic starts with an ultra-modern weight-relieved mahogany body with a maple top. This configuration gives you the classic hefty Les Paul resonance without putting undue stress on your back. Speaking of stress, you'll never need to worry about playability thanks to the Les Paul Modern's ridiculously comfortable asymmetrical slim-taper neck profile. And, it has a rounded neck heel to help you access the upper frets more easily.

All of this ergonomic excellence would be for naught if the Les Paul Modern didn't sound great, but thankfully it is jam-packed with sweet sounds. It comes equipped with two Burstbucker Pro humbuckers, which do an excellent job of recreating the punchy, muscular response of old PAFs while sprinkling in some modern clarity and heat.

This guitar would be a delight if the Burstbuckers were the only sonic option, but it has a plethora of other tones on tap. The push/pull volume knobs allow you to split the 'buckers into single-coils, and they sound wonderful: warm and full, with a vocal quack in the upper mids. But, there are many more tones to be had! The push/pull neck tone knob activates a phase reversal, which allows you to get those thinner, brighter Peter Green-esque tones. Finally, the push/pull bridge tone knob bypasses all of the tone and volume circuits and sends the bridge pickup directly to the output to produce raw, pure, unadulterated Gibson tone.

You can have a lot of fun monkeying around with these settings! In particular, I enjoyed splitting both coils, switching to the middle position, and then putting them out of phase. Pure thin, squawky goodness! There are all kinds of other fun tones hiding in the Les Paul Modern. So, we would like to invite you to pick one up, marvel at its incredible playability, and discover its many inspiring sounds.

Select Your Weapon

Wildwood and Gibson have a long and storied history of collaboration and friendship. Over the last 35 years, we have partnered with them to produce all kinds of Wildwood-exclusive guitars, and we believe that those instruments are some of the finest in the world thanks to the incredible creativity, passion, and skill of the good people at Gibson. One project on our wish list always eluded us, though: we've never done a Wildwood-exclusive run of Gibson USA guitars. That is, until now! Wildwoodians, please meet the newest member of the Wildwood Family: the Wildwood Select Original Collection Les Paul Standard '50s.

The Wildwood Select Les Paul is an attempt to capture some of the magic of our Wildwood Spec Custom Shop instruments in a more affordable package. Since the tops for our Custom Shop instruments are handpicked, we asked our friends at the USA factory if they could do the same thing for this run. They were happy to oblige us, and we think you'll agree that the cuts of maple they chose are absolutely stunning. Be sure to engage your drool shield if you're planning on scrolling through these guitars!

We also asked them to spray that handpicked wood with a brand-new exclusive finish: a Honeyburst that looks as sweet as bee's nectar! We chose it because many of the original bursts from the fifties had their finishes lightened by exposure to UV light while on display in music stores--Ed King's "Redeye" '59 and Peter Green's Lester are two iconic examples that come to mind. We wanted to pay tribute to these faded fifties LPs, and we think you'll agree that the Honeyburst finish highlights the grain of the handpicked maple beautifully.

The Divine Sound of 1959

Finally, we asked Gibson to wind us an exclusive set of pickups, and they came up with some marvelous humbuckers for us. Here at Wildwood, we love PAFs the way Slash loves top hats, so we asked them to capture the sweet vintage tones of those magical fifties bursts. It was a tall order, to be sure, but the wizards at Gibson delivered. They wound us some Wildwood Spec '59 Tribute pickups, and I could write a War and Peace-sized treatise about how awesome they are.

But, for the sake of brevity, I'll keep it to a few hundred words. These boss 'buckers sound brawny and powerful while maintaining remarkable articulation and clarity. They are also extremely touch-sensitive, which makes for a wonderfully dynamic, expressive playing experience. When you dig in, you are rewarded with glorious snarling tone that makes you want to turn your amplifier all the way up and irritate all your neighbors. When you ease off with your right hand, the tone becomes rounder, warmer, sweeter, and more vocal.

In the bridge position, the low-end is tight and muscular, the midrange punches like Ali, and the highs have just the right amount of sweet, sugary chime. Flip to the neck position and the low-end becomes deep and warm with woody, vintage-style clarity, the mids broaden and become throatier and more open, and the highs sing like Etta James.

Here's to Thirty-Five Years of Friendship

We are so proud to showcase the Wildwood Select Original Collection Les Paul Standard '50s. One of Gibson's flagship models, the Dot is a modernized take on the ES-335 that offers a blend of classic styling and player-friendly appointments for an incredible value. Aesthetically, they resemble the classic ES-335s of the fifties with their dot inlays and their "Mickey Mouse" horns, but their classy satin finishes make them look fresh for the modern age.

Though the ES-335 Dot's looks are stunning, its sound is even more spectacular. Gibson's high standards of craftsmanship give it incredible resonance, and two Calibrated T-Type humbuckers put out a preponderance of glorious vintage-style PAF tone with a little extra modern heat. The bridge pickup is meaty in the lows and chime-y in the highs, and the neck pickup gives thick, juicy bass response and sweet, singing highs. The ES-335 is also quite touch-sensitive, and you can really make the midrange fill out with sparkling overtones when you dig in. In order to freshen things up, they did away with the maple top and the sunburst finish. Instead of Les's design, they presented Mr. Paul with a sleek, contoured horned devil made out of lightweight mahogany. 'Ol Les was NOT pleased and asked them to kindly take his name off the truss rod cover. This left the Gibson marketing team in a bit of a lurch, so they scrambled to find a name for their new ax and landed on "Solid Guitar."

After its inauspicious birth, the SG did indeed prove itself to be a Solid Guitar in every sense of the word (who knows, maybe the SG works so well for rock and roll because it was born under a bad sign--it does have horns, after all!). Its aggressive styling and muscular tone quickly made it a favorite of a whole host of guitarists from Angus Young to Pete Townshend to Tony Iommi to Dickey Betts. When you step back and think about it, it's pretty wild that the dude from Black Sabbath played the same guitar as the dude in the Allman Brothers! Naturally, we're as hyped about these guitars as Pete Townshend is about performing windmills during "Won't Get Fooled Again," so let's dive deeper and see what makes the Original Collection Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top so special!

Custom Shop Magic

Of course, the magic of these guitars starts with the top. Though beauty is self-explanatory (take a look to the left of this text and all will be revealed!), let's try to explain it anyway. The tops the Gibson Custom Shop uses may be from the same species of maple as their counterparts, but they're a different breed nonetheless. Though they do meet a sky-high standard for quality figuring, what really sets them apart is their uniqueness. They're like snowflakes, no two exactly the same, each pattern of flame in the grain a sentence in a different musical story. Each one has its own personality and style, so you can find a Les Paul Custom Shop Top that reflects who you are as a player and person, and that is the true magic of Custom Shop maple!

Pugnacious PAF-Style Pickups

Though the Original Collection Les Paul Custom Shop Top is a guitar of uncommon beauty, there's nothing worse than a pretty face with nothing to say. Thankfully, they come equipped with pickups that help them speak quite eloquently and powerfully: two Wildwood Spec '59 Tribute Humbuckers.

These pickups capture the mojo and tone of vintage Gibsons beautifully. They have enough power, brawn and gristle to storm the gates of Valhalla, but they also display outstanding touch-sensitivity and a tremendous capacity for subtlety and nuance. Played clean, they create a beautiful world of warmth and sparkle that's easy to get lost in. Played dirty, they make you feel like you're crushing a 1992 Honda Civic in a monster truck!

The bridge pickup is a delight: punchy with plenty of snarl in the midrange, tight, muscle-bound low-end and sizzling-sweet highs. In the neck position, you'll find deep, warm, woody lows along with broad, vocal midrange and singing highs. These are the kinds of sounds that make you remember why you fell in love with Gibsons in the first place, and their capacity for musical inspiration is boundless.

Fabulous Fifties Flavor

This particular Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top is a '50s-inspired model, which means it comes with some pretty nifty appointments.

That's right-our friends at Gibson are building souped-up USA Les Pauls with jaw-dropping, outlandishly beautiful tops from the Custom Shop wood vault! If you let out a Ric Flair-esque "WOOOOOOOOO" upon learning that information, you're not alone, as there was much yelling, screaming, and open joyous weeping around the shop when we learned Gibson was building these bad boys. You see, a Custom Shop top on a USA instrument is simply unprecedented, and we love firsts here at Wildwood.

We also love pickups with serious vintage PAF vibes, sweet finishes, uber-comfy necks, and (of course) gorgeous wood.

Sizzling Sixties Style

This particular Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top is a '60s-inspired model, which means it comes with some pretty nifty appointments. It has a slim sixties-style neck profile that feels as fast as Crisco-coated lightning, and it's a joy to play. It also has Grover tuners and reflector knobs to match the decade's aesthetic.

Top-to-Bottom Excellence

We're proud and excited to share the Original Collection Les Paul Standard Custom Shop Top with all of you wonderful Wildwoodians.
