Bass Marketing thinks it's '62, Bass Sales thinks it's '64, and Bass Analytics thinks it's '55. However, all parties were forced to at least reconsider after hearing this magnificent '65 P Bass with an Olympic White finish that has aged unbelievably well (all that checking, and the patina...mmmmm). Apart from looking cooler than a polar bear's toenail, it sounds jaw-dropping.

First off, it's amazing the range of sounds you can get just by altering your velocity and technique. The attack is round and springy with some delicious musical compression that really makes the percussive quality of the attack come through. When you play with a light touch, this P Bass sounds warm and piano-like. When you dig in, it snarls more, but it mostly becomes more present. The notes stay round and punchy with an open-throated quality even when you play aggressively. However, you can significantly increase the volume based on the power of your attack, and that gives this bass a huge dynamic range, which makes for a delightfully expressive playing experience.

Frequency-response wise, the low-end is monstrous, the midrange packs a wide punch, and the highs are unbelievably fat and sweet. Across the spectrum, this serial has a dry, woody tonality, but it feels cavernous and huge, too. It does the classic Precision sound as well or better than just about any thud staff that has graced Wildwood's shelves, and its iconic tone works in just about any genre or context (who needs a Swiss Army knife when you can cut through with a broadsword?).

We're proud to showcase this beastly bass, and we have no doubt its pugnacious Precision tone will inspire you to bring the thump!

Condition Report

Wildwoodians, it is our privilege to showcase this incredible 1965 Fender Precision Bass. The neck dates to November of 1965, it's an absolutely titanic low-end beast, and it looks cool as all-git-out thanks to its really cool vintage wear. It has lots of awesome checking and other battle scars that tell the story of a bass that has been a workhorse for much of its life. All parts appear to be original and function well (although the E string tuner is a little sloppy, it's not bad by any means). The frets show some moderate wear--always a sign that a vintage piece is hard to put down! By the look of it, it has undergone one repair to the finish on the bass-side lower bout, which occurred prior to when the previous owner acquired it in 1972. Overall, it's in fantastic shape, and it is sure to bring any Fender fanatic seeking low-end thunder a ton of musical joy.

Sonic Evaluation

The Wildwood Bass Department is a contentious place with many voices making their opinions known, but we rarely reach a consensus except for in special cases like this 1973 Jazz Bass, which we all agree is a world-beater. It has some serious power and a stunning capacity for clank, but it also has an exceptionally wide dynamic range. Depending on your left-hand velocity, it can sound sweet and open or positively rude and aggressive when you dig in. The attack is percussive and articulate with lots of ensuing note bloom, and that musical "squish" effect on the front end of the note is pure magic.

When you play with a light touch, it that sounds as open as the sky above the Rockies with a sonorous quality that calls to mind the image of a hundred-foot-tall opera singer. When you dig in, it growls and snarls like a wooly mammoth-sized junkyard dawg. Low notes are D E E P and full-bodied, the mids are punchy, and the highs are quite fat. It can go from righteously smooth to downright dangerous depending on your mood, and that makes for a wonderfully expressive playing experience.

If you're seeking a monster Jazz Bass, everyone in the Wildwood Bass Department believes you owe it to yourself to take this one for a spin, because it is truly magnificent. We have no doubt you'll love it as much as we do!

Condition Report

This 1973 Jazz Bass sounds massive and is dripping with vintage mojo! It shows the typical wear we expect to see on an instrument of its age (checking, scratches, chips, dings, burn-throughs, etc.) and it looks super-cool. A previous owner drilled a hole in the back (likely for a strap button), and one small area by the control plate has been touched up, probably a long time ago. All of the parts look to be original, although it looks like the pickups have been removed and re-installed at some point. The frets also look original, and they show moderate wear. A previous owner replaced the plastic nut with one made of bone, improving the resonance and sustain. Finally, there are some small cosmetic cracks in the fingerboard that do not affect its stability. They look like they've been there a long time. And, to top it off, it comes with its original hardshell case!

Ever since it was first released back in 1965, the Non-Reverse Thunderbird has been THE choice for forward-looking bassists who want to make their own path and steadfastly refuse to follow the crowd. The low-end thump of these newfangled "electric basses" provided the rib-thudding backbone to hundreds of hits throughout the years, weaving its tone into the fabric of American music. Our friends at Suhr have captured the iconic sound of these vintage basses in their Classic P model, which is their unique spin on the P-style archetype. It combines vintage feel and tone with a modern fit and finish, making for a marvelous playing experience. Let's dive deeper and see what makes the Suhr Classic P such a powerful boom broom!

Bringing the Thunder

The Classic P's thunderous tone is the product of Suhr's premium tonewoods and a spectacular Vintage-Style Classic P split-coil pickup. The resonant alder body helps things sound beefy, while the Indian rosewood fretboard rounds off the sharpest edges of the attack by imparting a subtle bit of musical compression. However, the roasted maple neck is what sets the Classic P apart. Maple is already a stiff, strong wood, but the roasting process dries all the moisture out of it, making it even stronger and more stable. That stiffness means it acts as a sort of wooden tuning fork, boosting the Classic P's overall resonance and sustain and giving it a decidedly woody vintage flavor. This also means the neck doesn't move as much, allowing for a consistent setup.

Of course, the real star of the show is the pickup. The Vintage-Style Classic P split-coil is the sonic equivalent of a machete: who needs a Swiss Army knife when you can just hack your way through anything? It produces a round, springy, piano-like attack with outstanding depth and fullness that gives way with immediacy to a powerful, sonorous fundamental-heavy tone with just the right amount of overtones. The lows are deep yet clear, the midrange packs a broad, walloping punch, and the highs are full-bodied and glassy. It's the kind of sound that fits in anywhere--a testament to how well our friends at Suhr nailed the Classic P's well...classic tonality!

Back in Time

Playing the Classic P feels like stepping back into an alternate past, combining old-school neck specs with modern attention to detail to provide a supercharged vintage playing experience. It has a true-to-vintage 7.25" radius and a 1.72" radius, and the Vintage P neck shape nails the feel of the originals: slim near the nut and fatter near the twelfth fret. If you enjoy a beefy neck (and here at Wildwood's Bass Department, we do!), the Classic P will immediately feel like home.

But, it also has modern appointments like heavy stainless steel frets that allow it to rock for many years, Hipshot tuners with excellent stability, a satin finish for faster feel, and a heavy-duty Gotoh bridge. So, you get the best of both worlds: vintage feel and tone with modern reliability!

Take It to the Bass-ment

Wildwoodians, our Bass Department is delighted to showcase the Suhr Classic P, a bass that delivers a world-class vintage playing experience but with all the conveniences of a modern instrument. Its massive tone and vintage feel harken back to a fertile time in music, and we have no doubt it will help unlock your creativity and inspire you to reach new heights on your low-end journey.

Ever since it was first released back in 1965, the Non-Reverse Thunderbird has been THE choice for forward-looking bassists who want to make their own path and steadfastly refuse to follow the crowd. A pair of calibrated SG bass pickups (neck and bridge) with individual volume and master tone controls add further tonal possibilities.

Off the Rick-ter Scale

It's not particularly revelatory to say that the Rickenbacker 4003S sounds like no other bass in the world. But, one of the heartbreaking things about working here is you can't have everything you love, so it will be my treasured lunch break companion until it finds its next guardian, at which point I will collapse into a heap while sobbing. Those of you who read our site regularly know that I (Trevor, Wildwood's resident bass expert) LOVE Precision basses, and this one might be my favorite example I've ever played. It's just magic! There's no other explanation!

Overall, this bass has a wonderfully woody timbre, and it produces the hugest, clearest fundamental I've ever gotten out of a bass. Hitting the low E string is like standing inside a hollowed out ancient redwood and feeling the whole tree resonate. Imagine a grand piano enlarged to 100 times its original size, and you'll get a good idea of this serial's low-end power. The midrange packs a Godzilla-sized broad punch, and the trebles are so weighty that notes on the G string will make your drummer's kick drum quiver in fear.

More important than all that, this bass is INSPIRING! From the moment I first hit that cavernous first low E, I was in a flow state while evaluating it, surfing a wave of pure creativity. Any instrument that puts you in that headspace immediately is special indeed, and this bass is in rarefied air even among the other instruments that have taken me there.

Whoever gets this bass will immediately become a threat to planetary tectonic stability, as the Earth itself will quake in fear of their low-end power (I'm exaggerating, but only slightly). I have no doubt the next guardian of this fine instrument will find themselves resorting to hyperbole in their attempts to describe it, too!

Condition Report

This ultra-vibey '63 Precision Bass is mostly original, but has undergone some mods over years. It appears to have begun its life with a sunburst finish, but a previous owner stripped it and refinished it natural. The neck is gloss nitro lacquer, but it has likely been oversprayed at some point, and the logo is not period-correct; however, it is dated to October 5th, 1963. The pickup is original and measures 10.75k in output, but a previous owner replaced the pots. The pickguard, knobs, tuners, and bridge are all appear to be original, and they function well. The frets have been replaced at some point, and they measure .078 inches by 0.027 inches with very little wear. The nut is also non-original. It comes with its original hardshell case, which is battered to the point that we recommend carrying it under your arm.

Off the Rick-ter Scale

It's not particularly revelatory to say that the Rickenbacker 4003 sounds like no other bass in the world. I'm certainly going to think of this bass every time I hear "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor for the rest of my life! It's one of the coolest Rickenbackers I've ever seen, and one of the best-sounding. It so lively and vibrant that it practically jumps out of your hands during play, and it is LOUD acoustically.

That translates to the type of tone that made me turn up our 500-watt bass amp so loud my coworkers couldn't think and wail for a little bit. The bass shows very little light wear from normal use considering its vintage--just some light scratches, tiny dings, tarnishing, and light checking along areas of the binding. Their round low-end, powerful midrange, and legendary treble snarl have graced countless classic records, but what's really amazing is how many different types of musicians have fallen in love with their signature tone.

For instance, metal masters like Cliff Burton, Lemmy Kilminster, and Geezer Butler used their Rickenbackers' copious low-end and cutting trebles to provide a solid foundation for some of the heaviest music of all time, all while Rick James was using his Rick to lay down some of the funkiest bass lines ever committed to tape. Sir Paul McCartney copped his Motown-by-way-of-Great-Britain bass tone by stringing his Rick with flats to get a warm, pillowy sound right around the same time Chris Squire was inventing lead bass playing with his signature brash, bright Rickenbacker sound. The list could go on and on.

This begs the question: how can so many players in so many genres all agree on one distinctive bass tone? The answer is hard to quantify, but I think it's because the Rickenbacker 4003S sounds so unique that it winds up fitting in everywhere! It just has the sort of sonic personality that plays well with other instruments. Rick basses have a sound that can cut through a mix while simultaneously providing a solid, unmovable low-end foundation, and there is no genre under the sun where that sort of tone doesn't work!

It might not be a Swiss Army Knife, but who needs a Swiss Army Knife when you have a machete? You don't see too many doubleneck Ricks, and this one is in a pretty rare finish. It sounds amazing, and it's quite clean, although it has had a few modifications over the years. The finish looks great, showing some wear from normal use, nicks, scratches, dings, and chips with a crack in the pickguard, but far less than you'd expect for a guitar of this vintage.

There's also some light fretwear on both necks, and the hardware has tarnished a little. A previous owner installed 3 mini toggle switches. One allows sound from both necks to come through at the same time, one seems like a phase switch but has a negligible effect on the tone, and the third one seems like it's not working as intended (we think it was originally supposed to turn off a tone cap, but it currently defeats the bridge position.)

Outside of those switches, everything looks original! The necks both have working truss rods, but they're a little hard to adjust--no easy access here. The bass neck is bolted and glued in, while the guitar neck is just bolted on. Back when Music Man was in its infancy, Sterling was the beta tester for Leo Fender and Tommy Walker's prototype designs, and he acted as the deciding vote on many design decisions when Tommy and Leo couldn't agree (being Ernie Ball's son certainly gave his opinion some weight!). For instance, his input was the impetus for the Music Man humbucker's original design! After much arguing between Sterling, Leo, and Tommy (not to mention lots of blood, sweat, tears, and tinkering!) the Stingray was unleashed on the public in 1976, and it wound up becoming the go-to bass for everyone from funk masters like Bernard Edwards of Chic and Louis Johnson of the Brothers Johnson to thunderous rock players like Cliff Williams of AC/DC to session virtuosos like Pino Palladino and Tony Levin to heavy metal warlords like Rex Brown of Pantera. How did so many players of such diverse interests and tastes fall in love with the Stingray? Well, love is mysterious, but our theory is that the Stingray's signature sound delivers the sort of deep, clear low-end, bright trebles, and inimitable growl that works in almost every genre, giving you limitless possibilities.

Short in Scale, Long on Tone

This short-scale version is a fresh, new spin on a classic! Basically, it's like a little red sports car. It plays super fast, and the strings have a wonderfully slinky handfeel. And the tone is unbelievable. The passive pickups still have the wonderful growl that the Stingray is known for, but they have more of a vintage character. Using the rotary knob, you can put the pickup is series, parallel, or single-coil mode. In series, it sounds like an EB-0s distinguished high-fidelity brother. In parallel, the tone gets brighter and more vocal, and it sounds like an overfed, muscular Jazz bass in single-coil mode. The short scale also imparts an upright-like percussiveness to the attack and some wonderful note bloom.

Basically, if you play this bass, it signifies that you have immaculuate taste and perfect opinions (I say this because a short-scale Music Man just like this one has been my daily driver for almost half a decade). You'd be forgiven for thinking a tiny bass might lack low-end, but the opposite is true here. The low E sounds absolutely C A V E R N O U S, with the exact kind of woody clarity you need to avoid muddiness. The frets look nearly perfect, and it has accumulated just a few small war wounds over the years: some small dings (a few of which have been touched up), some checking along the binding and in other typical areas, but it has no serious cracks or damage. The caps on the back of the G and D string tuners are missing, but it does not affect the functionality of the tuners at all. Everything looks original except for some tiny screws on the tailpiece--super cool! There is an electrical tape repair on the bridge pickup leads that looks very solid and may just be a preventative measure. It comes with a non-original Epiphone hardshell case that fits it quite well. Not to brag or anything, but we are the most enlightened beings on Earth. We have more than enough cognitive power to tell the difference between good ideas and bad ideas. We'd best leave the ruminations on free will and human choice to philosophers and turn our attention towards the myriad visual, ergonomic, and sonic delights the Reverend Decision bass has to offer.

The Low-End Rundown

The Reverend Decision bass is a brilliant instrument for a variety of reasons. Best of all, it's available for an exceptional value. I always get really excited over professional-quality instruments that working musicians can afford, and the Decision definitely fits that bill.

Tonewood Talk

The Decision is a low-end machine, so let's start from the ground up and talk tonewoods. Like all other Reverends, it has a korina body. Korina is a lovely tonewood. It's warm, punchy, and round like mahogany, but it has a livelier top end and a bit more bite. Here, Reverend paired the body with a 5-piece maple/walnut neck, which is a glorious combination for two reasons: one, because five-piece necks are quite stable and aid sustain; two, because skunk stripes look awesome!

Wonderful Wires

The Reverend Decision comes outfitted with two exceptional Reverend pickups: a P-Blade in the neck position and a Jazz Bomb in the bridge position. In other words, it's Reverend's take on the tried-and-true P/J pickup setup. They did an excellent job of refreshing and revitalizing a classic electronics configuration.

The P-Blade sounds like a vintage P bass pickup that experienced some sort of Hulk-style transformation after being exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. Its lows are monstrously sonorous, with a warm, open character. Above that, it produces shockingly meaty highs and a strong, punchy fundamental in the midrange. It's the sort of classic thumping tone that works everywhere. Full, fat, and clear: what's not to like?

By contrast, the Jazz Bomb in the bridge has a brighter, more focused tone, though it still sounds powerful and satisfying. The lows sound tight but present, so you don't have to worry about losing girth in this position. The midrange and highs are brash, rude, and uncompromising when you hit hard, and you'll hear shades of John Entwhistle, John Paul Jones, Chris Squire, and Geddy Lee. Through a driven amp, it produces an iconic raunchy rock bass tone. When you ease off, the upper mids become smooth and horn-like. It's an inspiring tone that invites thoughtful lead lines and tasteful low-end runs.

When you put the Pickup Pan knob in the middle and use both pickups full-on, a wall of thunderous full-spectrum low-end punch greets your eardrums. Reverend has done an excellent job of voicing these pickups to complement one another, so they fill up the whole range of sound when used together. Despite their huge tone, they never sound muddy or unclear, so have no fear!

One Heck of a Neck

Instead of a chunky vintage-style neck, the fine folks at Reverend chose to outfit this puppy with a modern medium oval neck profile with a comfortable 1.65" nut width and a 12" radius. Reverend's medium oval profile is big enough to feel substantial but thin enough to feel fast and easy-to-play. The moderate nut width helps the neck hug the contours of your palm, and the 12" radius allows you to use a lower setup and bend strings more easily. Finally, it has an amber satin finish, so you'll have buttery feel right out of the box.

Only the Best

I hope it's apparent by now that Reverend is obsessed with using excellent components. Good wire and good wood get you most of the way to a great guitar, but the devil's in the details, and Reverend gets all the little stuff right.

For instance, they use a neck plate with six bolts instead of the usual four to improve energy transfer, resonance, and sustain. Also, you can string it through the body for extra resonance or top-load it for slinkier handfeel.

On the electronic side of things, they use boutique-quality capacitors and pots with a +-10% rating, which means a more consistent experience for the player. And, when you're using those electronics live, the Reverend Decision is extremely dependable. Pin lock tuners and a boneite nut ensure exceptional tuning stability, and the rock-solid four-bolt jack plate makes you less susceptible to Murphy's Law.

An Easy Decision

We are proud to showcase the Reverend Decision bass, because it delivers a ton of tone and exceptional playability for a mind-bending value. As expected, the solid mahogany body has deeply sculpted scarfing and the rounded profile mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard feels familiar and comfortable. A pair of calibrated SG bass pickups (neck and bridge) with individual volume and master tone controls add further tonal possibilities.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0799/5824/5651/files/216160045_lg1_624d76a7-6349-49ad-ad1d-c2fad3a3decf.jpg?v=1784316936

John Taylor Signature

The John Taylor Signature model follows the formula of the limited edition Rio Dream Bass, barring a few design tweaks and the Metallic Black, Primrose, Seafoam Green and Stealth Edition finishes, as well as a new 5-string variant.

On top of stunning looks and flawless construction, each bass offers wonderful playability and tones that display a rare clarity and refinement. “John’s bass playing with Duran Duran really imprinted on me how a bass should fit into a band mix,” says Sheldon Dingwall. “His basslines have always had a special combination of energy and elegance.”

BODY & NECK

Like the Rio Dream Bass, the JT Signature has been configured to Taylor’s own personal specifications. “It all started when I was in Toronto about five years ago,” says Taylor. “A friend showed me a Dingwall bass on his phone.
